I didn't expect my fiancée to get that since neither of us are EEA citizens but still, it's so hard to fathom how awful the US is for college | ||

Well, most countries have things like social security, but that differs widely in effectiveness. We do have closed compounds for refugees and some countries are more authoritarian than others and drifted similarly into ridicule as the US under trump (hello there UK). And then there are funny things like Germany having a good social security system but like a third or more of working people will be affected by the minimum wage increase. And in general people are so afraid of losing their status that progress is hard. As a cliche the Mentality is summed up as welcoming of you know them, otherwise rather cold, stressed and super NIMBY. The UK, a more liberal place with shit housing stock and xenophobic political rhetoric can be so much more welcoming and supportive than I've ever seen it in Germany. But also it relies too much upon private citizens to improve their life and that of others. Imo volunteering is highly visible in the UK and that's not a small part of helping the country run. I find it both good and bad. And people don't trample over each other. Maybe apart from London. | ||

I always thought that monthly subscriptions are pretty bad too though. Maybe lost arks system works out to less money than a $60 buy in + $15 monthly subscription over time. | ||
