Social media platform Twitter is dropping the terms "master", "slave" and "blacklist" in favour of more inclusive language. The terms are frequently used in programming codes which originated decades ago. what a bizarre day | ||

I know GitHub and a few other common software companies are changing that terminology as well. Blacklist/whitelist is kind of understandable though. Either way these changes aren’t what the world needs lmao. | ||

I think removing explicit use of "slave" is good? Like, it always felt weird when I saw master/slave in database land. I've never thought about the use of "master" on its own in git before this recent thing tho. I agree that there's a lot of protestors demanding real change and companies offering pretty weak nonsense in response. passive in other news PUP, along with some other great artists (Lucy Dacus who is *not* a punk artist, some others) all tweeted a link to this punk album on soundcloud that apparently whipped super fucking hard (it was called occult classic? but not the band that put out an album in 2015) and then after 12 hours they took down the link (on purpose, building hype) and I didn't get to listen to it and i want to listen so fukin bad | ||

Never really went too deep into anything hard drive related either. That’s interesting to hear though. | ||

As for master/slave I don't see how banning those terms helps anything at all. Whitelist/blacklist I get because there's a clear good/bad separation, but slavery isn't inherently racist afaik, and I get kinda antzy when language moves towards avoiding use of words because of fear. Obviously if the word/words offend some group of people (which might be the case here) then get 'em out and no harm done. | ||
