"Russia was a jerk" is a huuuuge understatement, and France rather made a rump client state to exploit for money and recruits (of whom thousands upon thousands later died in Napoleon's ill-advised invasion of Russia). Poland has been kicked around by neighbours and great powers for the last ~300 years, but hey, despite their best efforts we're still here ![]()

My NA friends insist the deprecation makes it not worth to buy a new car, but the danish car market is completely different from the NA market so I think I'm sticking with my decision lol

Also I'd wager that driving in winter is not the easiest to start with one's first car :-D The first car of a friend was cheaper than my bike though. Also depending on the intended use (frequency and purpose) as well as the general quality of used car marked and my (lacking) knowledge of car mechanics I can imagine enough reasons for a new one.

Still, have fun with it!

Uh, I don't see why my driving skills would make things turn out funky? And I don't get your winter comment. We get no snow and no ice. Denmark along with Norway has the most expensive used cars in the world last I checked. If I wanted an even remotely similar car to what I'm getting I'd be paying 55~65k DKK even for a 5~ year old car that's going to cost me 100k DKK new. And by buying new I get access to a bunch of consumer protections that you don't have on used cars. I went over the economics of this and the very minimal amount of value I might be missing out on are gained in consumer protections easily. If you have the money to buy it new it's fairly worth it. Standard VAT rate in Denmark is 25% and ontop of that you have what's called a registration fee that applies to cars which is 85%, meaning you end up paying 110% ontop of its price in taxes/fees when you buy a car. This has resulted in a very robust used car market in Denmark where used cars retain a lot of their value and also means that buying a used car isn't really cheap if you want a decent car. Sure I could buy a bare-minimum barebones car for a mediocre driving experience for cheap. But why would I? Actually might be higher if I'm not wrong, I think I read it was 150% now, used to be 180% As an example, a Toyota Aygo from 2012 is still worth 35'000 DKK. Equivalent to around 4'700 euro. (Which might have air conditioning as its fanciest feature) I'm going to get a completely new one with a variety of features and gadgets for 12'700 Euros + added consumer protections.

Driving in snow sucks. You could buy a car in Germany an register it? Does the tax apply to rrp or actual price?

I worked at Enterprise and this was why they bought new cars for their rental service. Whenever a car got a few hundred miles before the warranty ended they'd sell it to a dealer.

The reason to do it is twofold - the warranties and you know exactly what has been done to the car. A used car is always cheaper upfront, but a shitty used car can eat tons of money in repairs. On average I'd say the used car is cheaper, but a new car generally has no unexpected costs. Pretty much any used car needs some repairs so that's a bit of time too. My understanding is that good used cars have been rising in price for a few years as well, not being much of a saving. Always thought it was because they were prohibited to rent cars with more than X years.

Definitely wasn't why they did it where I worked. If it was, they'd have kept renting them after the warranty (as those are usually up within 15-60k miles depending on brand, which was occasionally less than a years worth of use). Quick google brings up nothing about the limit in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if there was one, I'd just be surprised if it was like, 18 months which was the average for how long they kept them. (We very occasionally had a 2014 in 2018, but those were always cars that people hated to drive so had very low mileage). Every day we had to take 10-12 cars over to get their tires fixed, I can only imagine what it would have been like with older cars (there were a few every day going to a dealer to get fixed or for recalls, but it wasn't like 3-5% of all cars in the lot like it was for tires). Every time they take something to the shop it costs money to have people drop it off and pick it up.

Feel like I'm usually somewhat in the loop of what's popular, but I legit can't remember ever hearing about this. I lived in Korea when it was released there and because it's Song Kang-ho it did well and people enjoyed it but I didn't get the feeling the koreans thought it was crazy exceptional. They enjoyed it though. It's funny how in all the korean articles Song Kang-ho and Bong Joon-ho is mentioned together but in all the western articles it's always just Bong. Anyway when it first won the Cannes award I was pleasantly surprised to see some Korean recognition. Then it got screened here in cinemas in my small town of like 60 000 inhabitants and I felt like they made something special. It's a great movie, and very well shot. But it also has a different pacing and story and is very unpredictable which was very enjoyable. The less you know about the movie before you watch it the better. So you should see it before spoiling yourself too much.
