Spelunky was originally just an experiment by Derek Yu, who at the time had already released several retail indie games, but made/released spelunky for free (Later remade it as a commercial endeavor after the free version's reception). Edmund Mcmillan (Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac) made a bunch of freely accessible games before he made things that were commercially available.

Idk if I'm making a point. I love indie game dev history. Part of me laments that people aren't making games because fuck yeah games anymore, I guess. Its nice that people like Edmund Mcmillan are now well off because of their creativity/hard work, but I HATE the game dev industry and lament indie games becoming part of that.

eric barone (stardew valley) is the indie dev story that i followed through its many years of development, and i'm really glad it's brought him so much success. especially in a genre that was considered to be pretty niche at the time.

I basically always do. Heh

I only follow tourneys til EG eliminated. It’s kind of amazing that’s the most dominant team fan loyalty I’ve had in my entire life for anything and after 10+ years (I think) it’s impossible pretty much for me to imagine a world where I didn’t cheer for EG.

Fishing starts on 15th for me and for a few months I’ll have a purpose for existence. Nice la.

Grant is a treasure. He's an endless source of memes and at the same time he's really knowledgeable about the game and the pro scene.

I also watch tournaments until EG gets eliminated, no point of watching games without my boi RTZ.

Good luck during the fishing season, hope you make lots of $$$ fam!

Got my package from the manufacturers, and it's not correct. I guess I'll try to ask these guys for a refund and make another order or something lmao. This is actually just some hot garbage. Guess I'll be able to start the final phase of my experiments even later than I thought. I assumed they had a machine do the work but I guess some technician still actually does something - enough of it's botched that I can't get much use out of it.

I like grant the most when he'e just wit the other casters with the other casters in a chill-cast. Similar to how other qualifiers usually happens

I like him casting just random na games tho

Super agree. I'm glad that stories like his are allowed to exist, and that chucklefish as a publisher is/was supportive of him going back to full independant.

This is actually pretty funny. Febby who got kicked on Mineski is interviewing his former teammate (and he's just asking insane questions like why was he kicked lol)

sample dialog from the interview

+ Show Spoiler +

Febby: What makes Raging Potato so good ?

Kpii : I mean. He's not so good. He's just average.

Febby: *absolutely baffled*

Kpii: What? Say something?

Febby: I feel like you should have answered like "raging potato is one of the best i've played" because you guys are gonna be on a team together.

Kpii: You told me to be honest

Febby: *baffled again* What if he sees this interview ?!?

I'm now bummed. This new story about the state of Dragon Age 4 and how its development was sidelined to save poorly managed games makes me wonder if the game will ever see the light of day.

I've really enjoyed both of these articles (obviously they are bummers I just mean they are good as far as games journalism goes imo)

Yeah Jason Schreier is a top notch games journalist and definitely performing his mandate as far as investigative work goes. Really respect how deep he digs into the sausage factory of studios and unveils how messy it all is. Not often you see a muckraker of his caliber in games reporting tbh.

Having followed Giant Bomb for years and hearing how Jeff Gerstmann and all the rest of them got their start, the lack of coverage like Schreier is doing makes more sense. None of the people who started covering games were trained in journalism. It has taken years for that stuff to be of value to the sites that cover games and for them to get over the idea that good reporting won't mean they will lose access to games. And for the video game readership to value that reporting.

Kotaku in general has really stepped up their game recently in terms of investigative reporting. They've been the major source for a ton of big bombshell stories or even quieter, but still deep dive stories like this.

As much as people disliked, with good reason, Gawker and its sister sites, that publication produced a large number of very talented reporters and writers. Kotaku’s reporting has not changed that much over the years, with the exception of these much deeper stories being a bigger focus. The gaming audience has changed and become much more receptive to stories that go beyond the typical hype and product focused coverage. I see it everyplace, including TL.net.

J.Storm really shit the bed in NA once the teams shuffled a few weeks ago. Now they can't win a single qualifier.
