The worst part is the shitty comparison with different alphabets. Yeah, you need to know the roman alphabet, but everyone does. People in Japan may not know english but they do know the roman alphabet. Pretending that you trying to read something in Cryllic is the same thing as a russian trying to read something in English is if just dumb.

I don't think the programming language article is obviously dumb - I'd imagine there's a non-zero cost to needing to learn some amount of english at the same time that you're trying to learn the first thing about programming (and the study cited in the article seems to bear this out). Doubt it matters once you know how to code and you're just learning what the equivalent of an if statement is or w/e

Of course there is a non-zero cost, but the writer sounds like someone that has no idea what that is like. It's like playing games in english, a 5 year old quickly picks up that that time means time, life means life, etc. The amount of vocabulary required in actual programming is quite small.

The one thing that "forces" people to learn english is the amount of content that is avaible in english as opposed to other languages. A monolingual programmer will be handicaped, but it has little to do with the programming language itself.

It reads like someone that doesn't face a problem creating a problem out of nothing, with no research as to how the population that should be affected by it handles it. Even if the idea behind it is not completelly without merit the written article is still dumb.

I'm surprised to learn there aren't non-english compilers for some of the more basic languages, or an IDE that just subs it for you. It feels like it'd be a relatively easy "problem" to solve if it were much of a problem at all.

That kind of shows you how big of a problem it is.

I think there are plenty of reasons even for fully programming in english no matter where you are from, as in variables and such, and that is something that is actually an interesting discussion you could have. I have no idea how common that is though, I don't really work this stuff.
