That pretty much killed the ability to review bomb games successfully in the first place, this is just the next step. Wasn't it just that they split it into recent and all reviews? With recent to the side and showing first in the aggregate.

Steam is doing better. They are less indifferent that before. I just wish it didn’t take a mountain of pressure for them to change things. Because I would like that shovel ware to go away.

Yeah, they're really being forced. Fwiw, I don't even have strong opinions about steam, I have no issue using multiple launchers and I already do so. If the epic game store becomes a good store, I'll happily use it, however that isn't really the case at the moment. Edit: Also apparently bethesda's new mobile game is everything bad about freemium games, pretty much what I expect from bethesda now.

I care about video game developers the same way I care about authors. I want to see more of their work, especially smaller developers who make tiny games I enjoy. Its why I own three copies of hyperlight drifter. Steam and its consumer focused tools of user reviews and forums have been caustic for many developers at times. And this dates back years. It is less of a problem when it comes to larger developers with resources. But a 10 person studio can have problems, especially if they didn't use steam as their major community hub. And this problem has been present for a very long time. Steam Greenlight, their attempt a community driven curation, became a hellhole for developers and consumers alike. Users quickly realized they could, through brigading, control which games got pushed to the top to be green lit. And assholes being assholes, some of the focus turned to which games were worthy of steam and which were to "political", walking simulator or whatever reason. Developers complained about the problems with the system for years. In 2013, Gabe talked about it being a problem and it remained a problem until 2017 when they shut it down. That fucking sucks. And the endless shovelware sucks too. So as a consumer of weird ass indie games and other non-sense, Steam has been a problem for the products I enjoy. And as a consumer, I've never really liked giving them 30% of the price I pay for games. For folks that most play AAA games and other things like POE or CS, Steam is fine. But that isn't me.

You don't have to host or provide servers for the files. You don't have to have a transaction medium or storefront. You don't have to advertise. Steam doesn't enforce exclusivity so you -can- provide drm-free versions or sell your game elsewhere. There are a ton of positives. I'd be happy if those avenues were available as readily through other platforms with as big an audience. As far as I know, as yet they are not. The game I made that was greenlit on steam I did most of the backgrounds and a ton of other assets. Another fellow did all the character design / animation, and the lead dev did all the coding/writing/design. I waver between embarassed and proud, haha. I ain't salty about steam. I get that you are, and I accept that. Also, you being critical of valve/steam is only gonna make people stop and assess whether or not your criticisms are actually valid, so carry on imo.

And if steam worked for you. That is great. I follow the work of a lot of developers who don’t enjoy working with Valve. They didn’t enjoy working with Microsoft back in the 360 era either, so my dislike it not completely focused on Valve. Don’t worry, I’ll dislike Epic too once they start fucking up.

I'm sure there are some games that would have been amazing that have never come out on steam but to blame the store for the failure of any Indy game is bizarre.

Idk if I'm making a point. I love indie game dev history. Part of me laments that people aren't making games because fuck yeah games anymore, I guess. Its nice that people like Edmund Mcmillan are now well off because of their creativity/hard work, but I HATE the game dev industry and lament indie games becoming part of that.
