I think after TI1 and TI2 the game was likely a loss leader to get people to install steam. TI3 is the clear turning point for Dota when the money started to come in like crazy and they figured out the workshop/chest stuff. Profitability takes a long time and people would be shocked at the costs of even creating a single hero in dota(from man hours on animation, art, sounds, effects).
But no company outside of maybe Nintendo has the unlimited cash reserves to just iterate on a product as endlessly as Valve has. Which makes it great that they love Doto as much as we do. Well, Valve released TF 2 numbers that showed that the game was making a ton of money. And Dota 2 is in a different league in regards to the amount of people who play the game, but with the same business model. Agreed and I think that is one of the main reasons why Valve got into Dota 2. Also, just from what I know from following video games for so long, I doubt TF2 brings in huge profits for Valve. For the same amount of money that they spend on TF2, they could likely make a boxed product that would be more profitable. But since TF2 is a gateway to steam and earns them a lot of good will with the consumers, it makes sense for them to support it. But only because of steam and the profits they get from steam. People often forget when Valve announced they were making Dota 2 that it was meet was a large amount of skepticism from a lot of outside press and community. It was only due to Valves very smart handling of the game that made it the success we know today. But they are the only company that can release a game with over 100 heroes and say “its all free, unless you want sweet hats, which we give away anyways”. Now Valve just needs to make good on the crazy Oculus rift Dota viewing mod they were teasing, where you watch Dota in VR like it’s on a table top, all in 3D. I demand to live in that future.
Don't forget history! TF2 WAS a boxed product (Orange Box and standalone). It didn't start out as F2P.

See, you are not using your imagination enough. The dream is that Oculus rift, the crazy 3D face mask thing, will show a dota game as if it was a table top game, with the heroes moving around like little action figures and your head is the camera. Its one of those cool ideas, like hover boards, what is in the super future we live in.

IF this ever becomes a real thing I would be giddy.

I wonder how dota-viable the oculus rift will be without mods etc. I'll have to try it when my friend gets his developer kit 2 or w/e its called.

There was an article a couple weeks ago that said Valve is experimenting with Dota 2 virtual reality mode with their VR headset they're developing. I was hoping they were going to show off a prototype at TI, but no such luck. =/

Does sound better - but the dream almost exists. Once they code smite to work in 3D.
Looking at Rosh would be cool as hell in VR.

i dont think anything of the game like smite, dota or LoL could work with VR from a game play perspective. The turn rate and height and movement shake are huge part of VR, one number goes slightly wrong and you send your users into movement sickness.
Porting 3D stuff into 2 monitors isnt hard, whats hard is to make the experience realistically so human brain could endure as 'reality'. A good example would be rocket jumping in games like quake or TF2. Simple set of moves from a normal PC game play but using VR it fuck with your brain. From the turn rate(look down to shoot rocket->lookup -> return to aiming) to the acceleration and travel speed to the 'brain expectation' of impact event(your brain has expectation of what the physic would do when you land)...
If Valve develope some sort of Augmented Reality device so we could watch DotA on a chessboard/tabletop setting it would be cool. Like this http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/GryGuy3-ZIg/maxresdefault.jpg. But such device would takes at least 22 years of hardware development before its entering the consumer market so may be DotA2:Episode2

I'm prolly puking with Oculus Rift playing doto.... that realistic doe

I can't see dota being played on a Rift (atleast not in First person view) but I can see it being spectated in one

i dont get why you would ever want rift to play or observe dota dota is kinda like a board game whats the point

Hardly Pokebunny's team imo. HH's captain, Hotaruz is actually a really smart guy about dota and is an excellent drafter. And I don't think anyone would disagree that HH won solely because of their draft.

Also, if you haven't used an rift, its sort of an amazing experience and having your head be the camera in the game is a very novel idea.
Also PPD pulling in those viewers being the only Dota man doing dota after the big dota event.

People are taking turns streaming the game. The conspiracy was all planned at TI where it was decided so everybody can get those big viewer numbers while taking advantage of the post-International drought.
