Dota is just confusing, and organizing that information in a way that is helpful to new players is hard. One of my roommates always forgets to buy boots from the sideshop and ties up the courier with that shit.

Unless you memorised everything(which I certainly didn't), you'd easily spend a full minute in the fountain just looking for things. I'm not sure how the system in dota 2 could have been done better than it is. Its really easy to find most things, and like you said the search bar is readily available and even take words like "sheepstick" should you have forgotten the name of the item itself. The quickbuy menu in dota 2 also really speeds things up, letting you get an item ready when you have time, like walking towards the fountain. actually if you do play like 4-5 months of dota 1 you would be able to memorize where those items are from which shop i learned to memorize it in about a month or two when i started really playing the game but that was alike a decade ago when the version was still 5.84c.

If that is too complex Dota might be the wrong game for the person playing. After a few hours you know the difference in the items. It even pings on the map to tell you where you can pick items from the secret shops.

Probably on par with games like civilization or hearts of iron. It's like teaching a baby how to walk.

no quickbuy or purchase-sticky-icon-thing, and no hotkey for them either. however, you could hotkey the shops and each item had its own hotkey so if you had those memorized you could've bought out bought out pretty quickly

It is only faster if you don't have enough gold for any item in you quick buy and want something other than TP scrolls. But that also requires quick thinking in Dota 1.

It's probably a bit more complicated than doing a round of macro in starcraft because you have to remember a lot more hotkeys. I just learned to recognize when it was futile to try to escape and bought while I was being killed.
