I was the same, and for me the turning point was Na'Vi's China bootcamp pre-TI3. From watching their involvement in Chinese tournaments, Dendi and XBOCT in particular showed visible improvement IMO over those few weeks, more so than the other members of Na'Vi. Yes, that was about the turning point. He pretty clearly put a lot of work in around that time. He was never close to as bad as his detractors claimed but he tightened up a bunch then. Since then Xboct has been the best carry in Europe and probably the world and any time someone insults him I just assume they know nothing about Dota beyond what commentators tell them.
Xboct's problems back in the day was his limited pool(old Na'Vi essentially had 4 players who could play almost every position + Xboct) He's a lot better now, though to call him the best carry in the world is kind of a stretch.
Also I feel like Loda is the ultimate play to the level of his team type of player. He seems to play so well when s4/akke/EGM are rolling but when they aren't, his play looks a lot worse. I will say that out of all the carry players in the west(unless you count RTZ as a 1 position player), Loda probably has the biggest pool of heroes.
