really ? There's good and bad music from every generation. "Music nowadays" means what? There's more things out there than pop music. And people are still making just about every kind of music that's ever been made every single year.
The funny thing about kpop is that I find it hard to believe that the same people would like it if it was in English. It's always seemed like more of a hipster fascination for people who are ashamed of finding regular generic pop music catchy. Or even less than that, it's for some just kind of an ironic thing.
Of course some people probably genuinely like it. But people and their music tastes are difficult, because a lot of people aren't really honest about what they like, they're ashamed of things they like, they follow trends in their little sub-cricles, etc...

IAMA person who genuinely like korean music AMA. It's not the only thing I listen to, I just find some songs really sweet or with lyrics I can relate to.
I am also a pretty big Phil Collins fan so I enjoy Korean songs like this one which has a somewhat similar style.

I don't understand kpop. Can someone explain why it's popular in this "internet culture"? I assume the target audience for kpop are teenage Korean kids, just like mainstream music in the west, right?

Think it's a mix of:
1. Fans enjoying to look at the girls/boys of Girls Generation or EXO etc. I think this is the biggest part of the "internet culture". + the randomness that PSY contributed.
2. People who still are into music videos cause western MVs are awful
3. Hipsters or whatever, trying to be unique
4. People who actually just enjoy the music Korea produce. There's got to be something right with it if an entire nation likes it.

I imagine cause it is a way to listen to (enjoy?) catchy pop music without worrying about the generally terrible lyrics that go along with it. I mean, they're probably still singing stuff like: oh this pain in my heart, we'll never be apart ladidadi etc but that doesn't annoy me as much because I don't speak Korean.
