Caster synergy is important.

Or get tobi a good caster that fits him to join them, like synderen.

Yeah kickoff lan finals was basically a bitch fight between 2gd and tobi haha :D

actually 3000, back in the day when you could look it up in the console that was the starting point.

What day are you referring to? When they first released ranked?

And could that starting point be related to when you first selected your skill level back in beta? Do they still even ask you that anymore?

Looks like that's the case based on this comment. http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/1utoq5/random_facts_about_valve_mmr_clearing_up_the/cell0ee

The blog put the average mmr at 2250 which leads me to believe that that is what players start at atm since afaik the current MMR system is neither inflationary nor deflationary, but rather net-zero.

Yes, I know I started at 3K.

Farming patterns for tinker? Which camps should i prioritise and stacking etc

Will usually go laser rockets build just for the early kill potential, but max march if I'm having a shitty time mid.
I usually go bottle, soul ring, BoT, blink, dagon into EB (hex, shivas, linkens if game goes on long enough)

I feel like my cs is a little low, and I'm not so good with ancient stacking while playing radiant mid (although would be willing to commit to it if it is a large increase in gpm). I know how to farm the 3 radiant camps at once, but I'm trying not to steal farm from carries etc

Only 3.8k mmr

you can clear all 3 radiant right camps via double march
both radiant left camps via double march
the rightmost med/hard or med/med on dire
and the leftmost two camps on dire
with a bit of practice you can stack any 2 adjacent camps with march

laser/march (4041) and rocket/march (1441) are generally safer builds than rocket/laser, since you can fall back on defending towers and farming. they still offer decent kill potential as well.

yes stack camps whenever you get the chance. it's much easier with a march-based build because you can march+autoattack to clear the :30 wave and stack at :53. ancients provide more money but stacking the hard camp is safer and easier to clear (2~3 marches versus 5~6)

you should be able to easily get 5 cs a minute even in a losing game, and 6~7+ cs a minute if you're ahead

tinker's 4 item core is bottle bots soulring blink. generally get bots before soulring, unless you need soulring to clear stacked camps (stacked ancients)

force, hex, euls are all generally better options than dagon. if your team has a ton of disables dagon might be a better choice but usually that isn't the case and force/euls/hex provide much more utility.
shivas and eblade are also really good but not as a first item. shivas is strong once you have the ability to stay near the middle of a fight without dying (for example blink ghost hex). it's decent earlier since it lets you farm a little faster and provides a ton of int but generally not the best choice. eblade is strong once you have a high-leveled dagon
ghost, veil, manta are also situational/luxury. ghost is good against ranged carries (gyro in particular), veil is luxury for dagon/eblade/veil, manta breaks silence and sieges towers
linkens is incredibly situational. against certain heroes it's nice (for example nyx and bat), but generally other items (aka euls, force, or bkb) will outperform it as a defensive item

MMR started at 3k for people who picked a certain thing for the question beta, no one knows the new starting MMR and ranked bases your MMR off your unranked or if you are a new player the unranked games you played before starting ranked.

No, the game just ended. It was supposed to be a regular 5v5 game, but instead of "10 players available" or something it said "19/20 players " O.o

The game just ended without going past the loading phase, all of us being dumbfounded :D

I wonder what a game would look like with 20 people total in it. I think it would be fun for about a game or two.

It wouldn't be much different from 5v5 mid modes considering how little creep farm there exists on the map to split 20 ways, so you'd have basically non-stop killing cuz heroes need something to do.

Yes, I know I started at 3K.

That actually depends on who quits and who keeps playing. Assuming e.g. 3k was the initial average that everyone started at (just as a random example) if someone plays until he hits 2.5k and quits the game he causes inflation, if someone plays until 3.5k and then quits he causes deflation.

Even though the average across everyone who ever played will stay the same as the initial value the average across the active playing population might very well change.

Yeah but for the purposes of determining the "start" mmr, people quitting doesn't have any relevance

AFAIK the blog didn't say it was for only "active" players did it?

Neither does the average, though.

There's no reason to expect a population of incoming players to have the same skill as the population of existing players, so there's no reason to start them at the existing average MMR. That would grossly overestimate most new players.

In a net-zero system, the starting mmr is necessarily the average MMR since for somebody to go up, somebody else must go down.

Note that players that start are assigned a very-high-uncertainty MMR that changes rapidly depending on whether they beat or lose to other new players.

Dunno where to ask for this and google hasn't helped, but does anyone know where I can find a vector or high-res render of the dota2 logo? I need it for something I'm working on and the only thing I found was a thread on reddit with a dead link in it.
When SC2 came for BW, I cried. Now LoL/Dota2 comes for SC2, and I laugh. \o/

So how seriously do you guys take ability draft mode? I have friends who take it way too seriously, and friends who go in and troll non stop. I'm in the middle- I like to pick things that make sense but losing doesn't really impact my mood at all.

I understand that with all the skills mixed up there are too many variables for the fight to be balanced, and I have more fun trying out skill combos than actually winning.

well people still try hard in that mode since it actually counts towards your win/loss ratio. I myself have a hard time just fucking around since I'm a bit concerned about win % lol

I personally think there should be a separate win ratio for ranked matches. Then it's try-hard time for sure.
