IRC chatter should remain in IRC - http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=tl.dota2

The weekly updates also tend to feel pretty sloppy. A lot of small changes get rushed out the door and end up creating their own bugs that need to be hotfixed or added to the bug list.

It's just a graphics update to WC3 Dota with some nice little features added (reconnect, eSport stuff, ...) but those dont make or break a game. But because of that you cannot paywall features which were free in WC3 Dota (heroes).
If you dont make it F2P people will play HoN/LoL (which are F2P) or stick with WC3 Dota. If you sell heroes like LoL, a lot of people stick with WC3 Dota. Or new people to the genre will decide "Well, both sell heroes, so why not go with the game more people play (LoL)?"

Concerning TF2: I'm pretty fucking sure that I couldnt play TF2 when it was released. It was part of the Orange Box. Only years later, when everyone who had an interest in the game bought the game, it went F2P. Because now with it F2P you have a broader audience. Valve didnt benefit from having TF2 B2P (since new sales were probably low), but with opening to new people (the F2P crowd) they gained a lot of potential spenders.

Some people mentioned Humble Bundle:
I wouldnt buy Humble Bundle games if they werent available for Steam - and I know I'm not alone with that. I dont want to have to take care of hundreds of digital games / cd keys. So HB supporting Steam benefits both sides a lot.

The TF2 f2p re-release was just one huge beta test for a business idea.

Dota 2 is nothing but extending the business model that was tested with TF2 into a fresh game, again with adding some things to see how they work (Internationals or Events come to mind). That's kinda how Valve operates, shouldn't be news to anyone.

They kinda beta-tested their business model with TF2 pre-F2P though really. They sold TF2 for $2.50 a few times and had some version of the store and items up as well before F2P.

But yes, it wouldn't be flat out wrong to say that TF2 laid all the groundwork for the current model used in Dota.

It's win/win for everyone. We get a great game, they get us all to install steam and the chance to buy other games. Valve gets to focus on a game they love. I like how they do things, but it is far from the standard buisness model. Valve just finds something they love and then says "how can we make this a game that we can put on steam and support."

tbh when you get the people who play your games to shout "VALVE TAKE MY MONEY" as a semi-official slogan you're probably doing something right.

I just wish Valve would cut the shit with the endless cosmetics and give us some idea of what they have planned, the GG valve more hats was trolling at first but I am seriously wondering why Valve just hat patches all day every day instead of talking to us and saying hey, we are working on a ladder/custom games/etc in the meantime we are going to continue updating cosmetics.

Also holy shit they need a quality control department for some cosmetics, that pudge hood *shudder*

There might not be a ladder but there definitely planning on doing something to refine the matchmaking progress as they said before. Careful balancing act of trying to inform players on how well they're progressing without having a way that promotes negative behavior such as elitism based on your rank/division/mmr/whatever.

Valve said they're working on something though without necessarily resorting themselves towards revealing MMR.

I mean that sort of behavior sort of exists to a small extent anyway though because of players in the very high bracket boasting themselves over players that aren't I guess..

anouncements arent really all that smart unless you want to create hype. i dont think valve want to create hype with bug fixes or soon-to-be-released-valve-time hero ports. the only thing it does is pissing people off when the work is canceled or massively delayed.
