In my mind unless these games have bad business models to get people on steam then Valve has the same strategy as any other developer when it comes to their games. Does Dota 2 bring people to steam, yes. Does Valve make f2p games to bring people to steam, I have no reason to believe.
Anyway, this has been talked to death.
You shouldn't even be comparing an anomaly like Valve to a normal game developer like. A normal game developer wouldn't and couldn't ignore their core franchises in favor of buying up and undertaking rebuildings of fan made creations like Dota, Portal, L4D, and CS. Even Blizzard didn't want to take on the risk of acquiring Dota and growing it up into Dota2. I mean, a normal game dev would've released an HL3 and even HL4 by now. They can work on Valve Time only because of the security Steam offers them. The more people logging into Steam and playing their games means more eyes on the Steam store and the Steam sale pop ups. While everyone is making pay2win games Valve is fighting the good fight with real f2p games. This is all because Valve owns the biggest video game store in the world.

Nothing of what you said has anything to do with what I said.
Yes, steam exists.

Yes, steam exists. And Dota 2 would not exist if it wasn't for the money that Valve makes on Steam. Its is because steam exists and Dota 2 was able to be made.

They need to lose first.

(granted there is office for Mac) But the purpose of office isn't to sell windows, if it was, then office would be considerably cheaper. Office is a highly profitable product. Show nested quote +Just becuase you think it sounds fishy or weird, or you simply don't agree doesn't require me to prove it. Your argument is some vague idea that "they just do what everyone else does". But Valve doesn't do what every other company does. Have you ever heard of a game being in closed beta for nearly 3 years? Because no one else does that, because they don't have a store directly attached to all their games. Well they can call it a beta all they want it was still a product with the same running business model as it had when it was released. The beta tag means nothing except a sign-up form. And I said they do what everyone else does in terms of business strategy as a game company. You make a game, you want the game to be profitable. Not, you make a game to get people on your other service and we don't really give a shit about how the game does. Actually the purpose of Office WAS to sell windows. It's not anymore because it's now the standard (and windows is too, but it wasn't when office was launched), but it wasn't the standard at first. It became standard by becoming better than the competition, exactly like Steam did. Now Steam is the standard too. Anyway I think everyone is more or less in agreement here, just semantics.

Sure, well the same could be said about Counter-Strike for steam, originally.

Valve are independent. The big other developers all answer to stockholder according to my very limited knowledge. Feel free to correct me there.
Being independent gives you the freedom to do risks the way you want. The Diablo3 auction house sounds like something stockholders would like to hear: "There was a lot of item selling fpr real money in the previous game, some websites made profit out of it. We can build an auction house into the game"
Everything they(valve) do is what they think makes sense. That doesn't make them evil and it doesn't make them saints. But it leads to them making a lot of thing we can all agree to like, amirite(am I right)?
Anyway where is my balls on the table yolo hero, tresdina? Next week, plz?

Considering the fact that our update was named this time, I think we can kiss weekly (content) updates goodbye. Maybe hats and tickets every week but thats about it.
Not that I wouldn't be really excited if Legion commander got added, I'm all for new heroes. Just that I think the expectations need to be rock bottom these days.

tresdina is a legit female name too dam

We can't really expect weekly content updates to last though. It's probally better to slow down now than to keep a fast pace and suddenly drop it completelly when most things are ported.

You cannot make Dota2 non F2P. It's just a graphics update to WC3 Dota with some nice little features added (reconnect, eSport stuff, ...) but those dont make or break a game. But because of that you cannot paywall features which were free in WC3 Dota (heroes). If you dont make it F2P people will play HoN/LoL (which are F2P) or stick with WC3 Dota. If you sell heroes like LoL, a lot of people stick with WC3 Dota. Or new people to the genre will decide "Well, both sell heroes, so why not go with the game more people play (LoL)?"
Concerning TF2: I'm pretty fucking sure that I couldnt play TF2 when it was released. It was part of the Orange Box. Only years later, when everyone who had an interest in the game bought the game, it went F2P. Because now with it F2P you have a broader audience. Valve didnt benefit from having TF2 B2P (since new sales were probably low), but with opening to new people (the F2P crowd) they gained a lot of potential spenders.
Some people mentioned Humble Bundle: I wouldnt buy Humble Bundle games if they werent available for Steam - and I know I'm not alone with that. I dont want to have to take care of hundreds of digital games / cd keys. So HB supporting Steam benefits both sides a lot.

Judging by Diretide and Frostivus and w/e Valve will successfully generate enough content without adding new heroes that I don't think that "running out" of heroes to port will be a serious issue.
However, yes it does make sense to tone down the hero-addition rate for now. I just figure they could afford to add like at least one now lol.

Why are people wanting weekly updates? Who cares? Updating monthly but with bigger content is just as good.
