Fuck knows why, but ultimately it's not like it's the same people working on these projects.

People already got a raw deal by buying a game which took 1 year for them to make decent after release

Only years later, when everyone who had an interest in the game bought the game, it went F2P. Because now with it F2P you have a broader audience. Valve didnt benefit from having TF2 B2P (since new sales were probably low), but with opening to new people (the F2P crowd) they gained a lot of potential spenders. . Valve did benefit from TF2 B2P, it had constant sales right up till the decision to go F2P. How they did this was by experiment, they did free weekends and sales at the same time. Adding new content fairly regularly, new maps and class updates. One particular risky move was to make it $2.49 (from $19.99 )for 2 hours during their halloween event (this sold a shit load of copies). There were always a lot of new players after free weekends. Going F2P was another very successful experiment and was massively successful but as others have said they used this game as a case study in game economics and are now benefiting from that study.

I'd argue that Valve deals with microtransactions and episodic game content better than other companies. People whined about HL:Episode 1 not having enough content or being too short, HL:Episode 2 came with the Orange Box. DotA 2 and TF2 doesn't lock their content from players either. CS:GO was a bit of a mess though as teapoted said though and Valve was a little slow in doing anything with the game at all in comparison to DotA. You thought you guys at DotA had it bad? Look at how long angry CS fans had to wait.

They have their favorite servers that work fine, the game is what they want it to be. When Dota 2 was announced DotA fans would rejoice because it meant you'd get 'all the shit a real game has'. And not having to deal with third party software. CS fans after source I don't think really care about a new CS. It was a project that was outsourced to make a console version of CS and they decided to make a PC version as well. If you look at CS:GO when it first came out all the menus and UI were very console-ified (some still are). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_Path_Entertainment

CS:GO has been through a lot but it's kind of sad and funny to see CS pros look at DotA going like "why can't we have an event that's one fourth of what the International". Valve is pretty notorious for generally being unsupportive of the CS community.

It probably didn't work out in the end because of console infrastructure reasons. Condition Zero is probably the worst idea Valve has ever associated themselves with, even if the game was outsourced.

Global Offensive began as a port of Counter-Strike: Source to Xbox Live Arcade by Hidden Path Entertainment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-Strike:_Global_OffensiveWhich explains why it was shit until Valve took over development of the game. On September 21 2013 08:35 Kuroeeah wrote: Well as a diehard classic (1.6-) fan I have thought about this quite a bit. What could Valve possibly do for CS.CS:GO has been through a lot but it's kind of sad and funny to see CS pros look at DotA going like "why can't we have an event that's one fourth of what the International". Valve is pretty notorious for generally being unsupportive of the CS community. Of course people would love an event like TI, but ultimately the problem with CS is that the games haven't been good and the patches haven't been great for a long time. (since like Galil+Famas was added, and around then there were a bunch of really shit patches as well) CS is a game, more than any other, about very specific mechanics. When talking to assholes like me, there is a way an AK is supposed to fire, is supposed to sound. This isn't because it's right or wrong or good or bad, this is because this is what we played for so long and it became engrained in our blood. The only way to satisfy me (who is the majority of old school CS players), is to make 1.6 again. I think the absolute best thing would be to just have 1.6, source, and GO. And they would all be the same game. 3 different engines, but they would run the same, and you could play across them. You can add all this shit like deathmatch and fun modes, but to me what is interesting is having 1 game that almost never changes in 10 years. It's like you played football as a kid and all the sudden you go down to the field and you're using a balloon instead. CS is an unwinnable situation.
