Dazzle has 3.4 int growth per level... unless your team seriously needs you to be an Arcanes carrier then you can sit on brown boots (into probably treads for hp) into core support items for quite a while. You shouldn't be spamming healing wave early-mid on anyway since it will autopush the lane.

It is best skilled at the point in the game where lanes break up and you want one or more ranks to be able to farm neutrals while staying full HP. If I spent 45% of my mana pool on one spell it better be a golden bullet, not a 2 second stun with crappy damage. It's not even good for stealing kills as half of it is damage over time. The damage scales from 110-400. For a nuke, this is actually VERY good. It's only 45% of your mana pool if you deliberately choose not to build any mana itemization despite several options being quite good for him. Mathematically even if you are only getting 2-3 stuns in a fight (which is actually very doable with typical item selection on SK e.g. Wand+Drums), you need to get like 3 crits to match the damage of that even with Treads+Armlet, which requires you to be able to stand and autoattack for 20 straight autoattacks. This just doesn't happen until you have a BKB--you simply don't have the mobility to get that many hits in without one in a normal fight. So 4th rank Crit by level 7 is really pointless. Crit increases your neutral farm speed if nothing else. In a drawn out fight you will probably not be stunned the whole time. Leoric isn't the type of hero of hero that wants short bursty fights in my opinion. If you focus on hellfirebolt, then in the end you will get a weak version of Sven. Even getting a soul ring, and items that increase mana pool and without his ultimate he will get maybe 4 stuns out around lvl 11.
That's just not that good.

The spamming of his heal I kinda find to be great if you can get the boots up. i don't know that i'd rush them on dazzle. perhaps if i got a lot of gold early, a first blood or some kills in lane/ganks I'd pick them up. I generally like to get urn or medallion on dazzle first depending on what is going on. Well I do actually tend to pick up a kill early through his heal, just wait for them to be around loads of creeps then boom, people always underestimate it. Medallion though? cool, I've never got that on him before, urn I used to get but I kinda felt it becomes slightly redundant after you get mana boots and even more so with mek later.
I agree that Urn is redundant especially if there's some NS or something on the team that could get better use from it. I think Medallion is amazing seeing as all your other shit is either physical or decreases armour even worse. You would need a pretty amazing game to get meka in any decent time, I feel like that one should be left to someone who can get gold.
Force Staff is really great as a follow up for friendly heroes in trouble that you just graved. Deso is the hilarious luxury, so is AC.

4 stuns = 900 damage after reduction. That is enough to kill someone on its own. You don't even need soul ring: wand+drums at level 11 is enough for almost 4 blasts (3 with reincarnate) without ever using the wand active. And that is without skilling stats (which is quite common), nor reincarnating for full mana (which gives mana for ~4 more blasts since you don't need ulti mana any more). Its not like you spam hellfire to farm or anything either.
As for neutral farming, it has less impact than you may think. At level 7 with no items, SK does ~70 damage. Max crit gives ~19 damage on average. Compared to 4 levels in stats (which I do not at all recommend), which gives 8 damage and 8 IAS, crit is not that much of an improvement to DPS, and also doesn't give tankability or mana.

You're actually correct that Hellfirebolt max first is better for fighting. My only gripe is that it still isn't very good. Comparing his basic skills across the board, critical strike is the only one that's actually quite good. His stun is outshone in damage and availability(mana) by many heroes. Only strong point is slightly faster cooldown. His vampiric aura was inferior to Naix's old lifesteal aura and comparable skills. His crit is 3rd best in the game, after Juggernaut's Blade Dance and Mortred's Coup de Grace.
If you want to play Skeleking to his strengths you will have a hard time, since he doesn't really have any. Just about the only thing he has going for him right now is that he can be jungled from lvl 1.
Sven got a makeover and became awesome. Skeleking got a makeover at the same time and stayed just as bad.

I always knew that you like me^^ Just wanted to say that I actually respect your opinion even though I think you're too much in love with ring of aquila and urn. When I was asked by a mod back then I recommended you among 2-3 others for the position of mod.

How can you talk about SK's remake and not even mention the thing that was remade?
And what are these other stuns that outshine his? Sven's trades out the 2 seconds of slow for 25 damage, aoe, 75 range (all good) but double the cooldown, and their mana is comparable. CK's averages out to about the same damage and less stun at level 1, but quite alot less damage and more stun at max level (taking mean values), and has slightly less range, but a faster projectile, so on average it's probably slightly better but no more. And their mana is comparable.
You can start comparing it to stuns on supports that might have big draws, but they all also have drawbacks. Lesh and Lina's are delayed. Lion and Nyx's are worse disables at level 1. And it's not really fair to compare to the stuns on supports because that's a different class of hero.
I'm not claiming that Hellfire Blast is the best stun/nuke in the game but it's at worse slightly worse than any others that exist.
I'm not sure how you reason that a theoretical four 2-second-stuns-plus-2-second-slows from one hero in a teamfight isn't good (it's probably unrealistic but if any hero ever did that much in any one teamfight it'd be ridiculous).
And what's the point comparing to skills that don't exist anymore?

...or you can just look at what skills scale of. If it's a nuke then it scales with levels. If it's a steroid, it scales with items. This concept applies to pretty much any hero that's faced with such a choice.
Getting a lifesteal aura in lane sounds like a fun way to ensure farm for the enemy btw. :>

I wonder why Icefrog lets stuff like Basi and Trueshot be toggleable, but doesn't let lifesteal auras do the same (Vlad/SK).

Regardless of whether its a good crit or not, its still not a good early game skill. Crits are only effective mid-late game, when you have lots of DPS which the crits amplify. But then you have all skill maxed anyway so what you max first is moot.
Stun is the only skill that is actually good early game (apart from the mortal strike thing which only needs one point anyway). As such, its the first skill you get.
