- Fixed illusions being able to upgrade to flying courier. UI - Added a spectator popup when Heroes acquire high end items. - Added a broadcaster menu (opened by clicking on the dota logo in the top right) that allows broadcasters to send generic stats, queries, and poll results to spectators. - The Spectator Smooth Drag setting is now preserved across runs. - Added notifications of item purchases in some cases. PERFORMANCE - Fixed a crash when starting replays on 32-bit versions of Windows. - Fixed a crash when changing window or screen resolution. - Fixed a crash when using alt-tab while running full screen. WORKSHOP - Added Itsy spider courier. AUDIO - Update Drums on Endurance cast sound. - Add secondary underscore for startup UI. -- the ui updates are cool, goes a way towards making sure dota tv doesn't get outstripped too far by stream production

I think the most stable position for pub-winning is the versatile semi-carry disabler. Capable of changing which role and position you are playing depending on how good each other role is being filled. Is mid feeding? Thats okay, you can roam/gank and fill their ganking role with your disables. Is your safe lane about to go 13-0 before 5 minutes? Sweet, go stack every camp on your half the map, and collect your win. etc... EDIT: by semi-carry disabler, I mean tree.

Saw it in a pub today, against a typical dual lane, where Treant would just pop armor on himself, go hit the enemy until armor wore off, and then retreated / repeated. With the large base damage and annoyance of OoV, it worked out way better than I thought possible.

A competitive support has a certain trust in his carry's ability to make use of the space given to him to farm, but you pretty much can never go into a pub game, put that trust in a random stranger, and expect him to win the game for you. You still fundamentally play that role of setting up your teammates in the early game, but the onus is on you to find which of your teammates that are in the farming roles are reliable players and set up those players to carry the game. More often than not, that player isn't the carry player. Statistically, the carry player is only the best player on your team (not including yourself) 1/4 of the time, so the other 3/4 of the time, you need to adapt how you play based on evaluating who that best player is. Doable with some heroes, but some supports need levels and can't gank very well early (and it might be a lot of walking time to go from top to bottom). Also what if your best player is a jungler?

Not every hero is good for pubs. Outside of a few exceptions, I feel the gank-capable supports have better effectiveness in pubs in general, the same way teamfighting semicarries have far more effectiveness as 1st position heroes than the hard carries like AM/Void. Obviously you can't play every support in this way, just like you can't play every carry in a way where they have high teamfight participation. But the ones who cannot play in this way arguably present a problem in terms of winning pub games for you. On May 30 2013 08:07 igotmyown wrote: Also what if your best player is a jungler? Then gank with him. I find it hard to believe that a jungler who ducks into the jungle and doesn't actually help the team would actually be "the best player on your team", barring a few specific jungle heroes who are awkward in their own right. Picking good heroes is part of being a good pub player (and is arguably one of the best ways to improve your ability to win pubs quickly). A "good" player who picks bad heroes won't be more useful or win more games than a mediocre player who picks good heroes.

Your carry could be the best in the world but just have a shitty game and go 0-3 early on due to poor support from you, hard pressure from the enemy etc etc. Making decisions on who to collaborate with seems a bit far fetched, and would only work if you were really good at gauging player-skill. My mentality when playing support is the sooner I disrupt the enemy mid/safelane the better. Ganks are risky but smoke #1.

If you judge incorrectly how good a player that's your problem, and is a point to improve on as a pub player. If you can't distinguish a player who's playing poorly from a player who's doing poorly due to bad matchups/poor support but playing well, then you can improve on that. The point is, it's something YOU can control, and not just a random factor of matchmaking. Being able to judge how good each teammate is matters for winning pubs on EVERY role, not just support. A lot of people complain about getting bad teammates in matchmaking, but I don't think it's actually that common where people get 4 teammates that are all bad (and when you do, you just shrug it off and go to the next game). I DO think its common that you'll get 1-2 good teammates and 2-3 bad teammates, and then see the good teammates get put into a scenario where they cannot carry the game. A mid hero in a bad matchup, an off-laner against a strong duo-lane/tri-lane, a carry with a bad support. You need to recognize those players that are good and be sure they can be put into situations where they can make good on their ability. This is true on any role, but is more so for support because you can't single-handedly take control of the game--you NEED one of those teammates to actually win the game when you're a support. A team doesn't need all 5 players to be good to win in a pub. There are plenty of pub games everyone wins where there was that one guy who fed and was useless, but it didn't change the end result of the game. You don't lose games because you had 1 bad player--you lose games because your team put the game into a situation where how good that bad player was mattered.
