I find that getting decent range early is sufficient for pushing down the creeps and tower with just one level in shrapnel and allows you to gank more efficiently. I would think you would only need to max shrapnel if you were struggling in lane, but I haven't played a tonne of sniper so this is mostly theoretical.
As for Vanguard on Razor, he seems to be the one ranged hero that it is in his core and most builds seem to have it at least as a situational item. I really don't think tranquil boots would suit him, since he is fairly short ranged and is likely to be hit that they would often be of little benefit and drum only gives 9 strength compared to 250hp, 6 regen and the 70% chance of block reduction. When you say vit booster, do you mean soul booster? Since vit booster is part of vanguard, I don't see why you wouldn't want the 6 regen and damage block (even if it is half what melee get) for an extra 1100.

I agree with doomblaze, what he said is much better on wasting that RoH on Vanguard. Give it a try.

Brood: You're going to be soloing long lane generally so you'll have a bad time. If they have a weak lane you may want soul ring recipe first so you can buy the whole ring at the side shop. If you're going to have an awful time (they have a trilane that can kill you and wards) you either want to start with boots and rely on your MS to escape, or tank up with branches and gauntlets. You do not want a quelling blade!! because you're not getting any farm. Soul ring recipe first ALWAYS. Better starting items are SR recipe / Tangoes / Sentry wards / 3xBranches. QB is good if you know their lane is weak enough that you can cs and deny, and actually helps immensely once you start poking in and out of jungle. Plus cutting down trees for extra vision (dire side) / secret side shop spot (radiant side) is useful. If the lane is easy for you as brood starting SR recipe / Tangoes / QB / 2xBranches is good. Never start off with Ring of Regen because Tangoes will give you more regen and you can buy it at the side shop anyway.
@TDL: I think your skill build on Brood is a bit situational. Generally you will not need to get Ulti at 6, but delaying it should be a conscious decision rather than the normal build. You take ulti whenever you feel like it will help you get a kill or push down a tower, which often comes at lvl 6~8. Your extension items need to include AC and Manta, as those will boost Brood's utility/dps more than MKB or Daedalus.

Vit booster also part for Heart which can increase Razor tankiness more than a vanguard could have. Even on NS i buy stout and vit booster and not finishing Vanguard = straight heart after armlet or bkb

Even the tranquil boots? Because I just don't see them being that useful on him. Edit: And I feel he benefits from the attack speed and flexibility from treads.
And do you eventually upgrade the vit booster to anything else? Heart I suppose?

Yeah don't get me wrong, Heart is of course much better, but unless your farm is going pretty well you probably wont be getting it for a while. I haven't played Razor for ages, he was one of my first favourite heroes, I should really give him another go with these suggestions.

trans boot is situationally good (like when you couldnt farm well/dual laning with another semi etc), i usually get phase on razor if i could get it before X minutes (depends on the game). Ya, vit booster for heart later.
|
I think phase is a bit too core on a hero like razor. Still, I would never, ever build vanguard on him.
|
tranqs are pretty good on every hero right now. They likely gonna get nerfed. The static large amount of MS on razor allows him to put up the link and stay in range, ontop of the imba regen.

whenever i have trouble with health i get tranquil first, since they are cheap and have a good ms and especially regen, helps so much when you don't get any farm early on

I just typed up an essay on brood mother, but I've decided to post a compressed version of the advice entailed. Basically I wanna go against what synapse said, pretty much never grab a soul ring recipie first. Maybe if you random brood, but the extra gold just lets you buy the regen you hope your team will pool you without them actually pooling. I am gonna talk about hard lane brood as playing the short lane is a whole different story.
1v1 You wanna be pooled on this hero. An early Poor man's shield is a blessing as it will actually raise your damage over 50, and let you exchange autos more easily. Even when not pooled I will usually go shield and one +3 agi boot and finish off my pms almost immediately. Brood mother in 1v1 match-ups should dominate the lane through constant right clicks and not nukes. You should be winning in almost any match-up before level 5 when your nuke becomes a harrassment tool. Against a sand king, tide or centaur its often better to just cheese them with 3 points bite 2 points web than trying to get early work done with spiderlings.
1v2 and 1v3 Minimum regen to go to the lane with is 1 salve. Hopefully your allies pool you a tango and in a perfect world a salve also so you can immediately make the PMS. Against the trilane or dual lane you will need to bring 1 or 2 clarities, 1 is usually enough. Only ever use 1 nuke at level 2 to start regen and then when level 3 immediately get 2 spiders with your level 2 nuke. Pop the clarity and get another set. You now have 4 big spiders which will completely rape a solo support (who isn't centaur...) and even dominate many dual support combos. Your soul ring is gonna be slow if they play this right regardless and holding onto soul ring components just makes it more expensive to try for opportunistic last hits. The extra damage makes you tougher to deny, and the block gives you more passes at the creep wave.
In both these scenarios you may even consider grabbing a quelling blade or blades of attack before buying soul ring components. Quelling blade is a much cheaper option which will allow you to edge out other low damage heroes who have not chosen it themselves (in which case it gives you parity) while the BoA will eventually build into phase boots which are a great alternative to treads. They gives you greater escape velocity than a yasha, and allow you to sick the spiderlings on your target as you lay in autos with ulti. BoA I would reserve for 1v1 match-ups as the soul ring is much more important and trickier to obtain in the 1v2 and 1v3.
Your team can afford to let you use the courier when you need the recipie.
Bonus edit - Times I would rush soul ring
if I knew I was going into a 1v1 or even sometimes 1v2, and I have a teammate who is going to zone them out very effectively for 2 waves. Lets say someone plays enchantress in the enemy jungle, and says she plans to bully them at the 1 minute mark with 2 creeps. I can probably afford to go soul ring recipie, quelling blade and 1 salve and leave myself with 150 gold. Really brave people might even skip all extra attack damage be it a QB or agi slippers if thats what you so choose. If you manage to collect a couple last hits off of the first wave, and all of the last hits off of the next 2 while she is being a bully, you have your soul ring. If this fails you are a naked brood who cannot exchange autos, stuck with only one salve, probably forced to use the courier to bring more regen. You can ditch the soul ring rush and move into a PMS now but you've already taken extra damage from your lack of defense and are holding onto a recipie. If this succeeds you now have your spiderling army rolling early, and can move into those other small items with the free last hits nuke grants. Altogether though, I would probably still like to have PMS first so I can just go in and right click people and maybe collect an early kill with my baller jungler.

Against dual or trilanes, it varies a lot. Chain stun lanes you want enough hp to survive. Right click lanes you might want stout shield. Against some lanes you might want to save for early boots. Against kotl type spammy lanes, I might want magic wand.

I do agree that the early stick can be very nice, but I do not think extra HP is a big issue. Branches are the cheapest damage you can pick up and with some random gold I may find myself with a couple, but the HP is just a bonus. My plan is to always see the supports coming by destroying the trees before creeps spawn. I actually find kotl a pretty easy support to deal with as he must push the lane to harrass you and 4 big spiders absolutely eat him, he's helpless against them! 200 gold delay from the soul ring can be quite a burden if you are not gettin that stick filled up through their misplays.
|
Did you guys see the new Riki set ? Damn, that looks really cool.
|
First off not a single guide mentions Magic wand, which is a pretty fantastic item.
+ Show Spoiler +Dazzle Guide Shallow grave at 1, maxing the heal wave, not getting a second point in poison until lvl 8. Who is going to die at lvl 1 and actually be rescued by shallow grave, but not shadow wave? Much better would be getting shadow wave at lvl 1 since it is a really solid lvl 1 skill. At the very least get 2 points in poison by lvl 4 so you can get an actual slow out of it. It will also stun if you put 3 points in it. Itemwise, you do know you only have 6 slots. Boots, Basi, Meka, pipe, Wards, Force Staff, TP scroll are 7 items in his core. Also veil of discord is utterly stupid on dazzle since all his spells do physical damage and don't benefit at all from the veil.
Bounty guide Jinada to 3, shuriken only to 1. Shuriken points 2 and 3 back to back. Really really weird skill progression. Max Jinada first, get 2 points in shuriken back to back. A good progression would be invis, jina, shuri, shuri, jina, track, jina, jina.......etc. Has no item for mana regen in his build. Make bottle optional, since he should be roaming around the runes anyway.
Axe guide Should mention pulling/semi-jungling as Axe feels good at it. Close to the lane and can harass with battlehunger when mana pool allows it. Could use a more varied itempool. For Luxury Heart and Shivas guard definitely should be mentioned in luxury. Aghanims a spot in situational. BKB, Cuirass, Euls, Sheepstick and Gem could be mentioned in there.
Razor guide Imho Static link is go big or go broke. 1 level of static link is not worth it. I feel skip link or max it.
Ursa guide A quelling blade for damage in jungle. Better would be a ring of protection and more healing so you can last longer in the jungle by simply autohitting. Why is lvl 7 not maxing your primary(fury swipes) skill but going back to alternating between 2 skills for no apparent reason?
Riki guide No stout. Starts with 2 slippers but doesnt build PMS. Goes 2 wraith bands before Diffu. Wraith bands should be situational.
Wisp guide Why getting spirits to lvl 2 asap then not giving it more points for 4 levels? Increasing tether levels does very little, while spirits scale linearly as a skill.
Didn't look to hard, but I am confident in the first few. Keep in mind that probably you too are somewhere in the top 10-20% of dota 2 players. I know I suck and I got rated as top 11% by dotabuff that one day where they had ratings. That means that there are many people out there who like dota 2 but don't actually know what's good. Use your own judgment for what makes sense and what doesn't.
