Ehhhh...

Like, the hero REQUIRES an ally to setup his "stun", his patch of ice on the ground is a really small AOE and is only useful if your allies do heavy magic damage (plus it costs infinity mana for no reason), and his E is a ghetto version of a damage aura that costs infinity mana again and slows your allies attacks (WTF?). His ulti is of course awesome but pretty darn hard to hit, and especially hard to time.

Basically, you do so much goddamn work to make this hero work, then he is like OK as opposed to great. I mean, I guess he counters healing lineups somewhat but you need to hit a lot of people with his ulti which is easier said than done (especially vs semi-competent opponents).

All in all, a useless hero. Maybe if his Q did more damage than every other generic nuke/stun...

I'm pretty sure there's a correlation between longitude and ability to play well while drunk.

Edit: One of Yangos favorite lanes used to be ES/AA. That might shed some light on the love. :>

AA? Useless? What the fuck am i reading.
AA is in no way a useless hero.

He most definitely has his uses.

AA was basically first-round pick material in Chinese DotA for about 6 months from late 6.72 to early 6.74. He fell out of favor not because of any changes to the hero, but primarily as the shift from 2-1-2 lanes to 3-1-1 lanes in Chinese play made it increasingly awkward to lane him (he can't solo hard lane, had iffy matchups against the really strong mids of 6.74, and levels too slowly as a trilane support). Those issues don't exist in pubs because pubs are often 2-1-2, and mid matchups are very frequently not those "bad" matchups anymore.

Sure but he is still worse than the vast majority of other supports in every situation that isn't the opponents running some silly double/triple heal strategy.

Unless somebody wishes to explain what makes him better than, say, lion.

Global Ulti.

If you are planning on level 1 5 man teamfights, nothing is better than chilling touch.

AA's a vastly stronger lategame teamfighter than Lion because of how insanely high the effective damage of his ulti is. 770 raw damage + negating Wands/Mek (effectively ~200-400 pure damage) + 12% max HP shatter trigger. On the order of 1k-1.5k effective damage per target.

The hero fits AoE teamfighting strategies insanely well, and is the king of hard lane 2v2. Again, the only reason he's "bad" in competitive play is because he's hard to fit into a lane in 3-1-1. But most pubs are 2-1-2 and don't always have the really crushing competitive mid heroes that AA loses against.

I still don't understand why people think he is good in lane. Just run lina or lesh? They do way more nuke and have better AoE in lane.

And the problem is that AA ult is really hard to hit more than ~2 people in a teamfight, unless you are like at base type range. The fact that his ulti is global is so awkward because he has no reason to not just be there at ganks/fights in the first place. He has no nice farming abilities and doesn't really use items any better than any other support. He isn't even a good defensive support because he can't save his ally with a stun (and his slow is pretty sketchy).

How about the part where Cold Feet's stun duration basically scales the same as Shackleshot's?

Even a 2-man ulti is extraordinary effective damage.

It allows you to teamfight from 1800-2000 range away from the main fight because 3/4 of your spells have insane range. This makes it much easier for you to survive in fights. You don't need to engage at the typical 500-800 range that gets many other supports killed.

Also, landing a good ulti is pretty good when you are playing against a chen.
