I wouldn't really call that "lightweight"
It's one of the most complained about features of LoL. I know when I try play it often bugs out or crashes during loading up a game so I miss first few minutes. It also takes so freaking long to load into game on this pc where dota takes long but not as long and requires more. I would LOVE lol to have a different launcher.

Generally people with lategame oriented skills that need mana/hp coz they fight mid game a lot

Juggernaut (on some builds - depends), Panda (on some builds), Antimage (on some builds - in which you go 1-1-1 and stats - situational depending on the amount of physical damage in the game), PL (max nuke 1 point in doppelwalk).
That's all I've got.
Edit: medusa too.

Can't see how you can complain about hero selection screen tho, since you can customize everything yourself. You can even filter by roles and shit. Not to mention that all heroes will always be available to every player - unless someone else picked it already of course. Don't have to buy valvepoints to buy heroes.
But as someone else already said: Everyone who played wc3 DotA for some time / started with it is alreadypretty satisfied with the whole interface stuff. I think this point really explains what I'm attempting to convey, the depth available in character selection and customization is amazing, especially for DOTA veterans; however, finding it as a first time player (never mind a casual gamer) is much more difficult than it needs to be. I'm not saying remove the depth, I'm saying help me find it. Yeah, I agree. If I remember correctly a big portion of what's not implemented yet revolves around tutorials, ingame guides, stuff like that. As you might have noticed the learning tab isn't very fleshed out at the moment. Kind of a "in Valve we trust" thing. =P
For me personally the only thing I miss about League in terms of launcher/UI is how much more pronounced chat systems are in League. Like, I notice myself caring much less about channels in DotA, simply because they aren't a major focus in the UI. A strong point about the client/launcher system is that for League you could have the whole thing in the background and be fine, for DotA I feel forced to use windowed mode and/or close it when I'm not playing. I can see how this stuff isn't as cool for beginners as it could be.

WR that skips ulti. AA that doesn't get chilling touch although with the buffed chilling touch i'm not sure if i'd do this anymore. Gyro that goes 1-1-4.

I know gyro's still do this, but unless he is an afk gyro (why pick gyro then?), I don't think its worth skipping rocket barrage EVER.
I've also started becoming more and more of a fan of the power of missle - particularly in the midlane.

Heroes that can get stats early (note this is not necessarily common or necessary at all on any of these heroes, and these are not the only ones):
- Omni (very situational, when you're strained for mana early Stats can be worth it over leveling Repel or Degen aura up too fast) - Panda (helps early mana problems) - Sven (not common anymore after War Cry buff, but still situationally useful) - Skeleton King (helps early mana problems) - Anti-Mage (1 Break 1 Shield, Blink+Stats farms faster in farm-y games) - Juggernaut (helps early mana problems) - PL (helps early mana problems, invis and Juxtapose are not useful low levels) - Gyro (1 Barrage 1 Missile Cannon+Stats farms faster in farm-y games) - Drow (very situational, sometimes 3/0/1/1 + 1 point stats stronger than having the point in silence against certain lanes) - Bloodseeker (not necessarily early, but common to get a couple points in stats before maxing Bloodrage) - NA (situationally 1-2 points stats can be better than mana burn ranks) - Veno (situationally if you need survivability more than Gale/passive ranks) - Silencer (CotS vs. Stats depends on the enemy heroes) - Bane (depending on the flow of the game, Stats can be better than Nightmare or Enfeeble ranks) - Lion (situationally better than Mana Drain ranks) - Pugna (Stats vs. Decrepify/Ulti depends on enemy heroes/how well you're doing) - Warlock (very situational if you really need the survivability/mana, sometimes better than Upheaval depending on how the game is going) - QoP (situationally better than Shadow Strike ranks) - Leshrac (situationally if you need survivability more than Lightning) - AA (common to get 2 points in solo lanes because Vortex/Touch aren't that useful in early laning)

It kind of worked even when we were mega behind due to naix bombs punishing positioning mistakes so hard. PL is really weak if you get him without any illusions so you just have to chain disable him. That's kind of the idea behind the storm but don't think it works vs better teams. It was fun though! This actually pretty good vs kotl pl. Not only do you have that long range gank potential on the PL, but sometimes if the other team if trying to 4-1 recall the pl in, you'll be able to jump the kotl before he can recall pl and get a free 4 kills) Also storm has surprisingly good AOE, is mobile enough to not get hit by a lot of illusions, and the overload slow is pretty significant against illusions. Oh wow never expected a pro to come along. That was our logic behind it too but thought it required positioning mistakes to really be effective so thought that it wouldn't really work out against better teams. I guess out assumption was wrong then if you like it too. Found that that gank potential forced PL to be with team otherwise they would always be vunerable since they can't 4v5 if you initiate first and team can save pl if he gets initiated on. You just need some aggressive wards. Its not hard to catch anyone out of position with storm. Both naix and storm are pretty bursty too with their initial combo so you may be able to just kill him and get out before the supports react.
I would try and first pick Nyx so you can have him as the aggressive ward and added damage to the burst. So then draft something like Nyx, solo laner (gryo, luna, any random mid hero) and naix. Then pick your 2nd support and last pick storm. Put storm on easy/mid depending on their lanes and depending on what you picked as your other solo laner.
It allows you flexibility too as if they don't pick PL you can still go for a safe or agro tri lane with naix and just pick some other random solo laner.
I think that would work quite nicely.

I'm not saying remove the depth, I'm saying help me find it. Well and now we'll come back what me and some other people already told you: There will be a tutorial, which will solve the majority of your adressed problems.
Heroes already are already put in certain categories and then rated at how good they do in each of those categories. Carry, melee, escape, nuker, initiator and some more I can't remember right now. Assuming all the categories will be covered in the tutorial even a first time player will know: "Hey, a hero with a good initiating power is something to my liking". So this guy will go to the hero screen, filter initiator and have a bunch of options to choose from. Now by looking at the herocards he can also see how good they do on the other categories and narrow the options he chooses from.
If I remember how it was playing DotA for the first time in 2006 it was quite simple: I played UD in wc3 ladder, so I picked the Deathknight / Abbadon. No questions asked - He has Death coil, that's all I gotta know. Then I also started playing Earthshaker, because I think Taurens are pretty badass. Newcomers will most likely just play the tutorial and then proceed to play whatever hero looks the coolest to them. People with ARTS game expirience are probably the only ones wanting to go more in depth and not just play straight away.

I dunno, everybody who is new should just have this giant "CHOOSE TIDEHUNTER" button in the middle of their picking screen, that they can only remove once they have 10 wins or something. Its like impossible to screw that hero up.

PS: Enigma is my most played hero. :x
