the two statements are not exactly contradictory, the idea is that the "point" system affects all teams equally, but the "point" system is only one consideration as to which teams are invited.

You can think of this analogy; team stability was something rumored to be a consideration from valve, and while swapping a player shortly before TI3 will likely have no bearing on whether Na'Vi or iG will be invited, it could be the deciding factor as to which of the 2nd tier European teams are invited, for example.

This, basically.

Fan favorites or big brands having an advantage when signing up for a tournament is nothing new, it happens every single time there is no clear qualification process. And it's pretty obvious why, it's ussually good for the tournament.

JD was just honest and basically said "Hey, even if Na'vi get's a low score, we are still inviting them. They are fucking Na'vi. It would be bad for our tournament not to invite Na'vi even if they don't behave as they should." Now they are safe in case someone complains that they got invited over teams with better behavior. That doesn't mean they won't lose prize money if they indeed get a low score, or that they won't get low scores, which is actually the only new thing JD implemented.

The bias on the invites would happen with or without it. Look at StarLadder, they invite american teams, they don't go to LAN. They invite american teams again, because it looks good for their tournament to have them playing it, they don't go to the finals again. Now they are taking their behavior and analyzing wether it's worth to invite them again. Do you think they would have gone through all this trouble if they weren't sponsored teams with a lot of fans?

Everyone does that kind of analysis and puts big names ahead of little names. JD just decided to write it down, and add some numbers to it. The numbers and the fines are not biased. They may be unfair or overly complicated, but it's hard to say without seeing it in action.

Popular teams means more money, bigger turnout, and for the most part, and overall better tournament. So it is unsurprising that they would add that bit regarding the potential of still inviting teams. They will still get punished though and prizes are quite important. So even if still going to get in, chance of losing % of winnings is pretty good reasoning for not mucking-about.

I for one support this new rule, I think it if is done properly, it will help the scene. Now, if they screw it up, they are going to lose a lot of respect. This has potential of drama written all over it.

Players being unprofessional sucks for viewers. It's far too common to play games later than scheduled, without a full roster, or even on a completely different day, when all of these things can ruin your viewing experience. And it isn't just free entertainment anymore, with the advent of Dota TV, in a lot of cases we're paying to watch these games.

Despite all this, the scene won't change without incentives. To suggest otherwise is to willfully ignore all the evidence that the past 8 years have given us. If these incentives are going to come from sponsors, it's going to be the incentive to shape up or get the boot, and I think as a community none of us want it to get to that point. So somewhere along the line, we have to say what we will and will not accept, and actually do something about teams that don't follow through on those guidelines.

Personally, I think showing up any more than 5 minutes late, and just how common this is, really needs to be addressed. Often you're wasting the time of your opponents, the casters, and thousands of viewers. I do understand that most pro players have other commitments, but I'd argue you need to fit a game in at the scheduled time, or you need to not sign up for it in the first place. And if something comes up, you need to give the admins time to do something about it, preferably days in advance.

Maybe that sort of thing is acceptable for other people, and maybe others have different pet peeves, but I 100% agree that setting down some sort of standards, with a meaningful penalty/reward system is a step in the right direction.

Is there a Dota2 equivalent to Day9 out there? I'd love a noob friendly explanation of the game.

I really like playing the game, but I can't make heads or teails out of watching casted games, I do like first person streams though.

There isn't really a day9 of dota. Nobody sits in their room every night and tries to teach people how to play better. There are a few steamers who try to explain why they do things a certain way for instance Merlini.

I think there are casters out there that have almost like bits and pieces of day[9] in their workings. I think the closest would probably be Lumi in the sense of topic specific episodes and trying to work with a system that sort of resembles day[9]s'. Granted, I am not saying they are intentionally using how he does things, but just giving example.

Merlini does not have a dedicated show but I like his style, he does give some good advice while playing. Would be interesting to see if someone tries and makes a good weekly series. I think it would be fun and a lot of work, but it would have to be someone that is incredibly knowledgeable and with a good personality.

draskyl sometimes casts games for communitys where he casts the game from a 'what you can do better and what people are doing that are good' perspective which is good, check his archive for when he casted some games for... what was the community called.. taw! that's it

Not sure if he's done more of those but he said he would, i'll dig around for the vod i'll edit it in if i find it

Edit: Found it! Copy paste from the taw forums

Not really sure if this is the correct place to ask (if not, someone correct me), but am I capable of streaming dota at a viewable level with these computer specs?
Phenom II X4 965, 8 GB ddr3, 1 GB Geforce GTX 550 TI, 2 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD. 1 MB upload/10 down.

I know the 1 mb upload is a big limit but I'm not sure if the video card is a limiting factor here as well. I have xsplit setup well enough to stream but it just looks like shit and still gives me ~50 extra ping.

edit:
Second the 2009 recommendation. He only has about 8-9 videos translated currently but they're of the highest quality around. Some are just commentaries on his most famous losses, etc. (not all are hero specific)

It depends on your overclocking setup but the machine itself should be able to do 720 on medium graphics, the main bottlecap will be the internet

If someone was going to be a Day9 for Dota 2 it would have to be Merlini. He's a former pro player, a quality no one else has. He also speaks English, which is important for reaching a broad and diverse audience like how Day9 has done. Also a bonus similarity is that both he and Day9 graduated from big name universities.
