Mek is a great way of making your hero beefier if no one else on your team in building it. It is one of the reasons Vanguard is considered bad (and the fact that a raw Vitality booster/ogre axe can give you a good chunk of health without wasting gold since you can turn them in useful items later on). 5 all stats + 5 armor + 4hps + 250 aoe heal is awesome.

Edit: come to think of it, would it be too overpowered to make Vanguard able to be disassembled? Melee get an early stout vs harass anyway, and you could turn it in a heart + hood/pipe later on and avoid the waste of 1k gold like you do atm.
