From the Twitter of IM headcoach, IM headcoach DongHoon Kang announced that There will be GSL finals event at the gsl finals location. And the event will be with IM's sponsor "구김스컴퍼니' (goo-kim's company?) and coca-cola.
here is actual message from IM head coach's twitter:
the other sponsor is Googims (http://googims.co.kr/), a clothing company I celebrated a bit when I saw this earlier because IM had no sponsors previous to this
Great news! I've been patiently waiting for sponsors to start working their way into this market. This is a really deserving team of sponsors as well, I just hope it doesn't alter their pretty jackets!
On May 13 2011 07:23 Kazeyonoma wrote: so, Nestea is part of cocacola brand, will MVP become Sprite? ;D
Nestea isn't a part of Coca-Cola in the sense Sprite is. Nestea is owned by Nestle, as in Nestle chocolate milk, but Nestle distributes Nestea in the US under a partership between Nestle and the Coca-Cola company called Beverage Partners Worldwide.
I'm surprised IM didn't have any sponsors considering the fact that it has two GSL champions, and now possibly a two time GSL champion.

The evil koreans and their coke come to ohio to fight brave American heroes and Dr pepper.
coca cola sponsored the chinese sports team wnv a few years ago. not sure how well that worked out but i'm happy to see coca cola in the esports market again.

nestea is made by nestle AND cocacola together. so cocacola = nestea in a sense.

As far as I'm aware they (Coca-Cola and Pepsi before them) were just using the GSL platform as a product sponsor as opposed to a financial sponsor. That is, mentions on the air in trade for free drinks (in contrast to financial backing as a main sponsor would).
Maybe they moved on with their idea. Back in BW Coke sponsored the OSL waaaaaaayyy back in 2001, maybe they see this as another big opportunity...
Is there a more precise translation available? The way you've worded it leaves plenty of ambiguity. It says a GSL event is sponsored by IM team sponsor <korean company> and Coca-Cola but doesn't necessarily say Coca-Cola is sponsoring IM. It would certainly seem reasonable for Coca-Cola to be sponsoring a GSL event, which is another way that can be interpreted.

it's certainly possible pepsi does something similar. both pepsi and coca cola had sponsored esports teams in china and if sc2 gets really big then pepsi could do it again.
Any news on the size of the sponsorship? The sponsorship itself isn't really that impressive alone, especially because Coke has been sponsoring GSL for a while.

Pepsi has been sponsoring GSL. Coca cola has just entered the fray.
I don't see why they have to put their sponsor in their name. :/ I would think a badge or something would be sufficient, have em all have cans of coke on their desks.
Great news for IM, I am sure they are likely to provide for the team if they travel abroad to participate in some Western tournaments, not that they had such a problem anyway I just hope it happens.

MLG's sponsored by dr pepper...
and Stride Gum, and Bic Razors and Hot Pockets and I might be forgetting some more. There's quite a few esports league/tournaments/players sponsored by non gaming related companies.
None the less, this is great news. Congratulations to IM.
I'm glad IM finally got the sponsorship they deserve, maybe now the coach will start actively looking to expand the team (including the foreign player slot he mentioned in the Artosis interview) now that he doesn't have to worry about getting a big sponsor on board, since he said he was worried about that in the same interview. Hope this boosts spirits in the IM house too, so that we see faces like Seed and Yongwa in Code A next season with a rejuvenated spirit.

MLG's sponsored by dr pepper...
And EG's sponsored by Monster, and Tyler by Stride.
Thats amazing ! So happy for them, one of the best starcraft II teams getting one of the biggest companies as a sponsor ! didn't think coca-cola would ever think of sc2 as a good sponsorship ! (Anyone got McDonalds yet?? :D)
a 2 time champion with a Code A silver, soon to be a 2 time champion, a Code A champion, and the original GSTL as well as Silver in the second one. By far the best team, surprised they are just now getting a sponsor. Also lol now I'm going to buy some coke.
Coca Cola O_o Nice to see them getting into esport. You can bet your ass alot of marketing ppl for huge companies are now looking at WHY Coca Cola decided to sponsor an esports team. Lets hope they like what they see and we see more mainstream sponsors poppin up.
Would not be surprised if they actually saw that Monster got into esports and tought it looked worth the money...
So glad IM got Coca Cola as a sponsor. Maybe now we will see IM in more foreign tournaments because Coke definately can support that and then some. Grats to IM.
OWOWOWOWOWOWOW im soooo happy for IM they were so good but still didnt have any sponsors and now they hit it big they deserve it! IMMvp -> IMCoke, IMLosira -> IMSprite
I shall continue to exclusively drink coke as my cola. Really glad it wasn't pepsi so I don't even have to consider switching now. I already drink too much cherry dr. pepper and look like a fool with these buns thanks to mlg.
This is huge! <3 Coke and I <3 IM so this is the best of both worlds for me :D I hope Coke stays in the eSports business, seems like the perfect demographic for them to be honest ^^,
I mean, I know this is actually par for the course in Korea (Coke sponsored several season of the tournies for BW), but it's still cool, especially since it shows that the companies see SC2 as viable moving forward for them.

Yeah, that sponsorship by the worlds biggest softdrink retailer probably is pretty disappointing.
Better luck next time IM.
I'm just kidding. It's more a sarcastic response to everyone saying they hope foreign teams will get a big sponsor like that one day, when Intel is already in the same league as Coca Cola in terms of market cap, and Coca Cola sponsoring IM not being THAT surprising given that GSL was sponsored by them already, and that in Korea, the amount of non-tech sponsors is quite large (Shinhan Bank, Korean Air etc.)
Grats to IM though, an excellent team that deserves excellent sponsors.
I think as foreign teams prove their worth, the sponsors will come naturally. Hence why MouseSports and EG have such great sponsors. Proven teams with proven players. Sponsors usually want to be associated with the best. Makes sense right?

Guess I didn't catch that, there are so many people around who'd have been for real with that statement...
Anyway, there are also those personal sponsorships at MLG, don't know about Stride Gum but Sony Ericsson is quite the company
For the moment I'm more excited about companies like Coca Cola investing in e-sports than Intel for example, because it's a rather new thing, Intel is all over the place already.

I wouldn't go there. Look at Intel and nVidia.
intel and nvidia, while big in the computer world, are no where near coca colas marketshare. coca cola dwarfs intel and nvidia in terms of revenue.
Bout time, IM is probably the strongest team right now, kinda silly that they had no sponsors. This also means that potentially we'll be seeing these guys in foreigner events as well, so awesome!

Sure but I think you can't compare Coca Cola to Intel/nvidia. Both are very tight related to esport, Coca Cola isn't.
I work at coca-cola, I wonder if they'll put a big screen TV in the warehouse so we can watch the gsl . But I'm guessing coca-cola 'merica doesn't really care. ._.
Wow this is awesome news. A huge company such as Coca-Cola starting to sponsor e-sports will hopefully convince other big name corporations to follow suit.
They had a Coca Cola icon on the front page of IM team website at least a week ago (when we got Nestea trending on twitter) so i assumed they'd always had this sponsorship o.O
I guess that's only a week ago, but still that's kind of a delayed announcement if it is new. Kinda confused :S
Nestea is a coke product? didnt know that.... I thought it was nestle's.
But anyway, very good news, after a week of teams closing etc. The coach was saying they didnt have too much money/sponsors, so hope this helps them. And it's kinda cool that it isnt a computer/game related sponsor, shows that the game has a possible reach outside of the core gamer community.

Yes they did - but a lot of people need to realize that just because a company "sponsors" a team, doesn't mean they get tons of money and all of their products for free....
I'm not going to pretend I know what IM gets or doesn't get. Nor did I know what we got at wNv back in 2006/7 when Coca Cola sponsored us (I worked in the foreign section as a journalist - working on the English portal for the team).
Also - food for thought, Pepsi also sponsored World Elite for about a year - last year until they were replaced by GIGABYTE as the main sponsor.
Anyways, congratulations to IM - glad to see them get support, I hope everything works out for the best : )

nestea is a distributed by BPW which is a joint venture between nestle and coca-cola. Source.
Sure it was a bit expensive, but I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor, refreshment, and the thought that I am supporting e-sports (or as White-Ra likes to call it, CYBER-SPORTS).
On May 13 2011 15:53 Buffy wrote: Freaking amazing that such a huge sponsor takes interest. Is this their first time sponsoring an e-sport game ?
correct me if im wrong but i believe coca cola has sponsered a msl or osl a few years back.
Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi has sponsor starleague back in 2001 and 2002. For Coca-Cola it is 2001 Coca-Cola OSL. For Pepsi its KPGA Tour in 2002.
Great news still, main stream product sponsor is very sweet for SC2 at this stage, hope other team can get their big sponsor in the near future as well.
Ow man, I'm so happy for them. So many good players in IM playing without major sponsor to back them up. Sticking as a team to impress the potential sponsors, they deserve every penny they get.
A great interview with IM coach by Artosis/ Hwanni from a few days ago. It's been already posted, I know <3 Artosis. But in case some people missed it, it fits this situation well.

Yeah i thought so. Didn't think i was going crazy.
Someone should send a url link to this thread to every single big company out there, because this thread shows how effective PR it is to sponsor E-sports.
Well deserved for them. Hopefully, with the new sponsor money, we'll be seeing them shipped to high paying foreign events in the future so they can dominate globally.

Coca cola actually sponsor one of the biggest norwegian teams. (Gamersleague). They were handing out fucktons of cans at a lan i was recently at. Still, good for IM. Probably brings a bit more exposure for Coca Cola than a norwegian team does.
I haven't read all pages but there's no mention of to which extend they'll sponsor the team. I hope they do what Pepsi is doing for World Elite though and then some.

Coca Cola Norway sponsors GL (GamersLeague) while Coca Cola Korea sponsors IM Different sub-companies i guess, with a bit different goals
Can Nestea keep his name? Nestlé is really sleeping this one out. Red Bull doesnt just sponsor. If they enter they usually add production value themselves. But yeah its imminent for them.

Congratz IM and Coke!
I don't see why they wouldn't let him, think of all the free advertising he has given them. I'm sure there has been plenty of people buying Nestea because they watched him play.
Nestea is a brand of iced tea manufactured by Nestle and distributed by Nestle company's beverage department in the United States and by Beverage Partners Worldwide (BPW),[1] a joint venture between The Coca-Cola Company and Nestle, in the rest of the world. It competes with Unilever/Pepsi's Lipton Iced Tea. It provides a variety of "tea products", in regular and diet forms, including liquid and powdered tea concentrates, refrigeratable teas, and ready-to-drink bottles dispensed by vendor or vending machine. The beverage comes in several flavors, depending on the country.
I wonder if this has to do with getting NesTea trending on Twitter after his last match. Maybe by then they looked into wtf was going on and decided to sponsor them!
Wow, congrates to IM, although Nestea (Nestle) in Malaysia is not part of Coca-Cola (Distributed under F&N), not sure about other countries but still it's a good news for such an imba team! Lim Jae Duck hwaiting~!!!
Holy shit! Biggest sponsor ever?! Can't think of a single company that could even begin to rival Coca-Cola. Unfortunately I can't increase my purchases of their products any further because I already buy them all the time. At least now I can say it's for ESPORTS and my favorite player! :D
Coca Cola doesn't usually sponsor anything(or almost, just huge exceptions) related to competitions where I come from, and as far as I know, for them to take part in this is reaaaaaaaally big.
Wow this is really a big news! O_O It must be true that 2011 is the year that will bring out the E-Sports scene to the public much more than the previous years.

(PS, FantaPrime does indeed still exist. July is in Clan Prime and on the Team Startale, as shown by his participation for Prime in clan leagues, but not team leagues.)
Hopefully this means we will see more IM players at more international events! if oGs MC thinks he can stomp all over the foreign tourneys he's got another thing coming if Nestea, Losira, and MVP are there to greet him.
Also super excited to see if the IM toss players make it into Code A this season. (Sooooo excited to see Seed play.)
Id never be sponsored by a major corporation like coke or pepsi (you know the reason it was called coke was because they put actual cocaine in the product to addict people to drinking it way back in the 50's right?), And the fact that soda companies actually produce Heavy Metals as a byproduct of manufacturing their stuff, AND the fact that it would be so expensive to follow the rules for keeping the environment clean and safe for humans and animals to drink that they moved to other countries with no human, animal, or habitat safeties or Rights, so that they can cut their expenses by just dumping that stuff into african or indonesian waters and landfills for the locals to starve and die from their crops and animals starving and dying, so no, I wouldn't be a sponsor for them.
