Group A is brutal. Group B is, too!
Remember that it's not "top 2 advance" or anything like that, it's "winner of each group gets a fast track to the finals and everyone else is comparatively screwed."
MLG's Format

Those are pretty awesome groups, Like your chances Incontrol,
Also I hope Rets ready for Some Zvt.
|
Group B is stacked. I can't wait.

Haha A & B are absolutely stacked compared to C & D, going to be fun to watch them though
|
Really pumped for MLG! Sucks not to see TT1,Morrow, Huk and Jinro to because of GSL WC tho.
Tyler looks sick lately he'll be tough to beat!
|

A and B definitely look like the groups of death.
I saw on the mlg forums that Halo players are getting intro music like a wrestler or baseball player has, I think it would be a cool idea if SC players do too.
|
should come down to
A kiwi/idra
b Ret/Select
c What TLO rolls
d Tyler/machine
|
Yeah all of these brackets are stacked and even though they are a few players favored per bracket I can't call them.
|
lol wow Idra's got a tough group. I think Kiwi/socke/Idra any 2 of them can take it.
B's pretty gross looking too. Damn should be a great MLG
|
Poor Gretorp. I love the man. But he is definitely the underdog in that group
|
Oh man, A and B are so brutal.
Poor Gretorp!
|
Poor IdrA, hates playing Protoss and gets stuck with two of the best foreign P's.
|
Painuser needs to all kill teamliquid without Jinro here. Too bad none of his games are scheduled to be streamed, but we still get some incontrol vs TLO. A- IdrA(Z) vs. Sockeh(P) 5:30 B- SeleCT(T) vs. Sjow(T) 6:30 D- Tyler(P) vs. Machine(Z) 7:30 B- SeleCT(T) vs. Ret(Z) 8:30 A- IdrA(Z) vs. Gretorp(T) 9:30 C- iNcontrol(P) vs. TLO(R) 10:30 Is the announced stream schedule with Day(9), ItmeJP,and DjWheat on casting duty
|
holy shit epic groups are epic
Pool A (1) Root.KiWiKaKi(P) (8) EG.IdrA(Z)
two obvious favorites, socke COULD take it but i think kiwi's pvp is too good and idra is clearly favorited here
Pool B (2) dignitas.SeleCT(T) (10) LiquidRet(Z)
Another insanely close group, could be any of 4, but i feel like Sjow been in slight slump recently, think select + ret will come out on top
Pool C (3) LG.PainUser(T) (11) LiquidTLO(R)
Pretty solid group as well, think incontrol and slush COULD have a chance of taking it, but these 2 seem most likely to win their group
Pool D (5) LiquidTyler(P) (12) Agh_Antec(P)
Tyler obviously been preparing for this event and I would be surprised if he didnt get out... but Agh is a beast that always seems to be overlooked... i really think he can take top2 in this group
edit: just read top2 dont make it... so i'd say the finals of each group will be ^ predictions
|
There is also a 1 more player not included that is to be decided from the open bracket if I remember correctly, could op be edited this could could make some groups more deadlier.
|
That can't be right...incontrol and machine are in different groups. You must have made some kind of a mistake.

I know Kiwi's PvP is good and all, but I'm baffled that so many people pick him as a favourite over Socke despite the fact Socke has taken down Huk and Tyler in PvP at Assembly recently, gone 4-2 vs Squirtle at IEM, and took down the JTV invitational last weekend including more impressive PvP series when he went a total of 6-2 vs Attero.
|
Who exactly is agh? I've seen the name before but I don't really recognize him. Is he known for winning some big tourneys, or just solid placement at them?
|
Cmon ret fighting! Group b seems tough, but sure he can make it! Group 1 seems stacked too.
|
LOL GJ incontrol your in the top 16!, You better gain some solid points in case Jinro and Huk come back for the next event!!
|
On the MLG page, it shows in bold which games will be streamed as well... looks like:
5:30 CDT: IdrA vs. Socke (I'd rather see drewbie vs. Tyler, rematch from The V Week 1) 6:30 CDT: SjoW vs. SeleCT (Team battle, poor Dignitas! Only team battle in the group play.) 7:30 CDT: Tyler vs. Machine (Rather see IdrA vs. KiWiKaKi for sure, two of my absolute fav. players) 8:30 CDT: SeleCT vs. Ret (Should actually be quite a sexy bo3) 9:30 CDT: IdrA vs. Gretorp (Best matchup of the 4, two PvP's and a different TvZ are other options) 10:30 CDT: iNcontroL vs. TLO (Best matchup of the 4, gotta get TLO some on-air time)

hes a member of lazarus gaming, a highranked USA team... but apart from that hes pretty much a quiet ladder player... but i'm pretty sure he came in top16 at all three MLGs last year... unsure as to his specific placement, but hes a hella strong protoss

Yeah I was going to post something similar. Kiwikaki can definitely win against Socke but I'd be hard pressed to bet against the german atm.
|
Haha, wtf those groups :D A and B totally stacked and C and D ..really not ^^
Lucky Incontrol, he really has a good chance to directly go to Winner Brackets semifinal now. Especially with TLO being so weak lately.
edit: And Idra lol Kiwikaki considered to have best NA PvZ, Socke considered to have best EU PvZ. Have fun ^^
|
I doubt IdrA would be confident about winning his group before the patch. I am really interested to see what he comes up with, as he never really uses infestors well. His potential to completely falsify that statement is amazing.

I think QXC will be pretty damn good as long as he is practiced, which I imagine he is. Wish one of his games was being streamed. Oh well.
I am so happy tournament season is here, TSL, MLG, GSL, NASL, and more. This is nothing short of awesome.
|
Dissappointing that there aren't going to be any games streamed from qxc or PainUser. Shocking that there aren't going to be any from KiWiKaKi.
|
So this is two Fridays from now, correct?
|
Looks like every player has to practice several match ups except for Ret. It's ZvT practice time for him, should be an advantage.
|
wow i never realized how close it was to starting up again its been far to long. Really looking forward to all of the games they plan to broadcast. I hope tyler can take this one but its gonna be hard lot of great players.
|
I totally hope that in their match, Incontrol rushes dark templar while Painuser rushes banshees and there is an epic cloaked base race.
edit: woops, already been said/hinted at. It was just the first thing that came to mind when I saw the pools/matches

lol poor gretorp....
GL HF all!
|
Cool to see no major team-kills in the group stage aside from Group B with Sjow and SelecT being stuck in the same group. Considering that they are considered two of the best Terrans in the international scene, whatever TvTs coming out of that group should be quite good. Throw in qxc too, and it's a TvT fan's paradise, aside from Ret just chilling there.
Hard to say which group is the true "group of death." A and B look quite formidable with players that are well known and strong from the international scene. C and D also have very strong players, and I expect a dark horse or two to come out of those groups as well.

Wow, such stacked groups. Group 1 is hard. Unfortuneately for Gretorp, he probably hasn't had a lot of time to practice lately. And IdrA is obviously the favorite, but it's Idra vs P for most of the games so...And then Kiwi and Socke both have great PvP the other groups look really stacked too, im interested in seeing how some of the lesser known players do
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I wish everybody could just advance.

Its good players, but to me group A is going to be... 1. IdrA 2. Socke ...without a doubt!
|
|
I wish the tournament officials would correct Socke's name. I know everyone was wondering about how he was pronounced, but putting an -h at the end to make the pronunciation more intuitive just ain't right. For everyone who is still wondering: Here you can have it read aloud to you
Anyhow, for patriotic sake: Socke hwaiting!

Most of the 2nd day I think non seeded players will have the best chance to get streamed. there's like 6-7 hours of open bracket action without any pool play.

Imagine you're a player who just spent all of Friday evening and all of Saturday playing constant bo3's to advance to the top 4 of the open tournament (That's winning 6 bo3's total) and then having to face a group of fresh players who have already been proven to be amazing at the game on Saturday night. They're well rested, they're only playing 1 bo3 and it's against you! You could have just busted your ass night and day to play a bo3 against IdrA, Socke, KiWiKaKi, and Gretorp, guys who have just been waiting to see who is unlucky enough to slip into their group of death. That's harsh.

thats why they call it halo...erm wait.
i used to play halo 2 to a semi competitive level, met the ogres on ladder a few times. and i can tell you now that playing 20+ games of halo is not tiring. on the purely mental side of things, although during combat you are thinking a mile a minute you actually do get some mental "breaks" of up to 20 seconds every couple of minutes; makes a huge difference to your stamina.
even the idea of playing 20+ back to back starcraft 2 games makes me feel tired.
|
|
disagree josh, the guys who played in the open bracket will be warmed up, where as I will not have played any games in the last 3 days ;D
|
All these groups look so good! 2011 is a great year for starcraft and hopefully it will only get better!

Group A: IdrA Socke
Group B:
Ret SjoW
Group C:
TLO Slush
Group D:
Tyler Machine
I think group a and b are incredibly strong. I feel SjoW has good chances to advance since his tvt was always very very good.
|
a and b stacked yet c and d kind of a joke:/

So are there only 16 people playing? Why are there not more people at the tournament? was there some sort of preliminary that I'm not aware of?

Why is everyone picking two out of each group? Everyones too used to the GSL lol.
This is for the championship bracket, already explained exhaustingly that it just determines where you are placed on the bracket by your rank. Its group play, round robbin, to rank the 5 in each group.
NOBODY WILL GET ELIMINATED.

Group C: Banshee vs DT, looking forward to it :D

Oh ya I totally forgot about that. It's like habit to pick out top 2 from group stage

I feel like group C will be a good group to watch, but IDK haven't seen TLO play in a while.

|
What I read: "Kinda sad how democracy works..."
Ranking well in last season, while a HUGE acomplishment, shouldn't direct all future tourneys. You have to look at more recent events, as well as the fact that the more known players (through streaming, or their humour, or their interesting plays etc) bring in more crowds (read democracy) which is exactly what the sponsors with the money (read Capitalism) works.
|
Really nice how well they managed to get lucky with the point system allowing for all these teams to be spread out, only Select vs Sjow are in the same group, but 3 EG in different groups, 4 ROOT, 3 Liquid, what are the odds all of those got split up
|
Poor Gretorp, group 1 looks really nasty, providing Socke can make the flight over that is. INControl you must be pretty happy with your group, not hitting any team mates for once.
|
|
|
Group B is the group of death 3 powerhouse Terrans and Ret OMG. That is going to be one hell of a group to watch. I think the other groups shouldn't have to many upsets.
|
Lucky for Idra to have a patch buffing ZvP right before an MLG cause he's in a group with 2 really strong protoss lol
|
incontrol and machine not playing each other? surely thats a mistake...
|
Oh man, I hope Painuser uses Banshees against Incontrol.
|
If I understand the format correctly, each group will have an additional player who qualified from the open bracket. The best players are already seeded, but it's possible we could see some surprises.
|
Damn, I should have asked MLG Lee if we could do that for SC2!
|
so i thought mlg was an open tournament... meaning anyone was allowed to attend... how come there's these groups? is it not open to anyone now?

If you posted the poll on your website ahead of time I'm sure it would bring in a lot of traffic. As long as the voting system doesn't get abused like the one that NASL used. I think as long as you hide the results until the event happens it'll cut down potential abuse a ton.
The simple alternative would be to poll the livestream chat during the event (I've seen you guys do it in previous MLGs so you've definitely got the potential)

How could they not cast Idra vs Kiwi! Please. Please. Please MLG switch the 7:30 Group A matches with the 9:30 Group A matches and cast Idra vs Kiwi at 9:30. Everyone will love you for it.

Lol I feel bad for Agh_Antec, I hope he can show some good games though, I don't know anything about him thus I want a good showing!

talent in these groups is a little disappointing... never the less I will still be watching.
|
Group A is so unfortunate but since it's seed based can't really complain. Idra having to play ZvP against two of the best foreigner protosses could go either way

god dammit hes called socke.. whats wrong with MLG for not even getting a pros name right

Naniwa and Ret are gonna have beautiful nasty rivalry

Player passes are still on sale HERE. So if you'd like to a part of this action, go there to purchase your pass, to play in Dallas April 1-3rd. Passes will be available until Monday, March 28th at 11:59 PM ET.
If you'd rather be a spectator at the event, those passes are also on sale all weekend wrong, but miss the long lines by buying your pass ONLINE.
Furthermore, if you'll be watching from your home, there will be more information announced soon regarding the HD stream, and the regular stream as well.

i guess thats for the us guys messin up the pronounciation
ot: holy group B

there must be some mistake, incontrol and machine aren't in the same group.
|
On March 23 2011 21:32 SupastaR wrote: there must be some mistake, incontrol and machine aren't in the same group. No mistake. It goes by seed.
They are 13th and 14th seeds respectively, so they are not in the same group of 4.
|
Group A and B is sick, the only thing I'm sure is that Kiwi will advance.
|
So who's gonna come out of open bracket? Remember, each group gets a 5th player who goes undefeated in open.
|
A an B are some groups of death if I have ever seen one
|
I heard Halo fans also get free juice boxes at MLG
|
Love the 16 players who qualified via points, so excited to see Gretorp get a slot as I love watching him play and hear his analysis (more so the second though). He clearly understands the game, I just hope he gets enough time to practice with the NASL on his back! Ret is in a group of doom, 3 very strong Terrans.
All I can say, is that seeing this lineup makes me really happy for group play/double elimination as there are already a lot of great matchups on the line.
|
In Ret We Trust.
I will be getting my HD pass again this year! Gonna be so Baller!
|
Pulling for Machine you can do it brotha!

He probably chose Sockeh because you pronounce it that way.

Yeah no kidding, Painuser put up some especially entertaining games last time. I can't see him not getting out of his group though. qxc is fun to watch as well. I know there are a ton of TLO fans, and he's a great guy, I'm just so turned off to watching random players, I can't even watch his games -.-;

Why don't you like random players? I think they are fantastic to watch, because they bring such a strong understanding of the game to the table.
But just so you know, TLO always goes Terran against Terran, so he's not completely random. I'm not sure if that matters to you at all though.
|
group B definatly the groub of death,
All 4 players could 100% make it.
Group a i would have said was the group of death, if i didn't feel like gretorp was commentating so much :D messes with practice!
|
Ret vs. Terran!
And TLO uses his randomballer race!
|
D is the group of death, because tyler is going to be killing everyone else in the tournament
|
Really wanting the Liquid` guys and Incontrol to make it out of their groups here. The rest of them are all brilliant as well so I suppose it's really hard to be dissapointed.
|
OMG group A is gonna have lots of upset.

Ya I agree. I think its USA fanboyism goin on here. Kiwi who has been playing below what we know hes capable of, and Socke who has been playing quite well especially at dreamhack. And Im from US, and I think Socke will clean the clock out of Kiwi.

Tyranny of the majority yo! But there is something to be said about promoting yourself as a player. Whether you put forth the effort yourself or helped by friends in the community. He knows HD, why couldn't he throw some interesting replays his way. You have to show off your greatest games to more eyes even if in the long run you're not that good.

Wow this is some cool groups. Can't wait for the games!

I feel IdrA is not going to get through his group He can beat Gretorp, probably lose to Kiwi - it might all depend on his match against Socke.
Oh, so i just heard from JP's stream that there will be no eliminations from these groups. Strange format.

We're making a couple of adjustments based on feedback in this thread to the Friday night pool play schedule.
9:30 to 10:30's match will feature Idra vs Kiwikaki on the mainstage (instead of Idra vs Gretorp).
Idra vs Gretorp will play in the 730-830 slot and will not be broadcast.
Revised schedule here (will be updated within a few mins): http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=203995

Also, who is Antec?

So people don't call him "Sock"

I'm not really sure why NA people seem to have a problem pronouncing Socke. :lol
"Say it like socket without the t" Should be a simple enough explanation for even the slowest doofus in town.

I don't understand, i thought MLG was a tougnament with like 128 spots. Why are there only 16 players?

There are more than 16 players, this is just a group match (for the top 16 seeded players attending MLG Dallas) that will determine where they will be placed in the Bracket -- Also Known As: Placement Matches/Rounds.

Because in English the E at the end of Socke would normally be silent.

Pretty happy to see Kiwikaki vs Idra will be casted, good change. Bought my HD pass, I'm pumped. I think last years MLG tournaments were my favorite to watch... I dunno, I remember being the most excited during them.
|
IdrA's going to roll Group A. Group B, however, is going to be really interesting to watch, by which I mean Ret's the favorite, but weird shit can happen.
Group C's actually just insane. Difficult as Group B? Maybe not. But it's going to be crazy, given that you have a P, a T, a Z, and a Random. Entertaining as hell. I'm game.
And then Tyler's in Group D. G.G.

Maybe it's karmas way of making him finally learn to play the matchup rather than just blaming the loss on imbalance, rather than his own over-droning/lack of aggression/whatever.

More likely it's lack of top zergs, eliminating ZvZ.
|
Tyler and TLo have good chances of advancing.
|
Such a shame that Select has lost form, he was a beast at last year's MLG. I don't think he will be able to keep up with the improvements that other players have made.

Not weak, but definitely weaker than his other MU's. I think that is a general agreed upon view.

Didnt meant weak as in not good, meant weaker than his other MU's which is still strong... Yes his micro is amazing.

im backing incontrol all the way, love his PvZ hope Kiwikaki advances too, i really like his PvP even since i watched him play against huk last year at the MLG that huk won (cant remember which one )

I'm assuming that since this is in Dallas, the times listed on the MLG website are central times, correct?

Last Question, I promise. Where will the stream be located? On the TL stream page, or the MLG page? Just trying to get organized for the event...working 1/2 a day then hopefully watching the games with some friends.
