I hope you enjoy this in-depth interview with Movie ^0^

This article is dated 3-15-2011.

Movie, Waiting for his Potential to Explode

Hello. I am Movie of Hite Entus!

Movie. Born in 1990, he was drafted in the second half of 2007, when CJ Entus drafted players over a 4 part designation series. Using the id “mOvie” because of his name (T/N: Movie’s given Korean name “Yung-hwa” can also mean “movie”), he, along with Effort and Skyhigh garnered attention as a “new trio”. Much, at the time one of the older hyungs in the team, said “he doesn’t just look like a bear, he is a bear”, reflecting the soft expression that Movie carries.

In a time when individuality is often given up for mass standardized play, Movie has grabbed attention by displaying his own unique style, especially against Zerg, where he has showed a lot of potential against. Surpassing both Effort and Skyhigh to reach the finals of an individual league, Movie stood on a stage that any progamer dreams to stand on. Yet he had to settle for 2nd place after facing “Final Boss” Flash.

Following this, Movie slowly declined, disappearing from individual leagues and experiencing severe ups-and-downs in Proleague. But in the 2010-11 Shinhan Bank Winner’s League, he scored a 3-kill, putting momentum behind him and even recording his first all-kill ever. Famous for his terse answers to interview questions, he recently said “please do not forget me”, a phrase that has lingered long afterwards.

It was like that. Seeing Movie from when he debuted, I wanted to interview him in the comfortable atmosphere of a tea house after hearing him say the above phrase; a “changed” Movie offered a pleasant live interview.

From the progamers that I know, you, Movie, is the one who has the least to ever say anything. Of course, I think there are people who agree with me. But in a recent interview, you said “please don’t forget about me, it would be nice if you didn’t forget about me”. You still don’t have much to say in interviews but I didn’t know you would say something like that. Have you suddenly changed?
- I heard from my fans that it’s been 1000 days since I’ve debuted. I feel like my appearance has changed a lot in that time and I also feel like I’ve become a lot more mature. A few days ago, I went into Fomos and searched my name in the search bar and looked at all the pictures of myself since the time I debuted. Even I feel like I looked like a teddy bear at that time. I was soft and my skin condition was nice. Anyways, I changed a lot. I don’t know if I can say that I’ve become cool, but I think I’ve become more manly compared to when I first started.

Everyone likes to search their name and look at articles about themselves but it’s kind of surprising that you looked from the very beginning. There seems to be something going on. Why did you do that?
- I had nothing to do and I was bored. I just wanted to do it. When I look at the interviews long ago I always said nothing but one-liners. These days, I think I say a lot more than before.

What did you feel when you saw all those old pictures and articles?
- I felt like I looked my best during the Starleague finals. So I started to have thoughts that I wanted to stand on such a stage again. Also, I felt that your face shows everything that you are thinking. Your attitude or your posture…

After the Starleague finals, you went downhill. But I’m glad that you are doing well again these days. The phrase “You mature as much as you suffer” comes to mind when you think about the unstable performance you experienced.
- I definitely feel like I became more mature after experiencing serious crises. I’ve experienced large crises twice during my time as a progamer. The first time I suffered physically and the second time I had a tough time mentally.

Please explain more specifically.

- In the first time, everything was just hard. It was hard as a trainee, hard enough to make me think if I should quit being a progamer.

He cut his hair to help refocus himself.

Oh. It’s something I’ve heard from Much (During the time when Entus was sponsored by CJ, Much was well-known to favor Movie as a subordinate). I heard that he gave you a lot of advice. Wasn’t it when you got a buzz-cut?
- Yes, that is true. After talking with Much hyung for a long time, I decided to go back at it again with more effort. The next day, I took a serious attitude and went to the barbershop. But at the end I was the only one who buzzed his hair. Even though I would have still done it if no one else had done it.

Then what about the time when it was hard mentally?
- When I was sent down to the B-team. My skin condition got really bad and it shook me psychologically. I also had some tension with Coach Cho and when I think about it now, I was just really young at the time. It was hard, but experiencing them I felt like I could face other tough things too. It’s all thoughts that I get these days.

- And going through these hardships has made you become a greater player.

My confidence has always been the same but I definitely feel like my skill level has increased.

Movie has been considered to be among the players who have slow hands. Even now, his APM is in the low range. But from harassing to rough battles to rampant psionic storms, Movie isn’t lacking compared to others. And one thing that is one of his greatest weapons – his confidence. Every so often you meet a player who has a lot of confidence and self-pride in his talent, and Movie is one of them. To players like these, there is no player that “I want to avoid”. Also, there can be a player that “I have lost to before” but never a player that “I cannot ever defeat”. We talked reflectively about Movie’s Starleague finals with Flash.

You are known to be a progamer with relatively low APM.
- I’ve asked other progamers to watch over my gameplay because of that and I’ve noticed that everyone is very quick. I don’t think it’s a big problem though.

Regardless of whether you are good or bad, it seems like you enjoy PvZ the most. In fact, on your road to the finals, you defeated Zero, who was on a 13 game winning streak against Protoss, as well as “Typhoon Zerg” Shine. Do you have any particular knowhows against Zerg?

- At the time, I had enormous confidence against Zerg players. From the Round of 36 onwards, I used the same builds every time only because I knew that my build and my micro would never fall to my Zerg opponents. It was harassing with corsair-reaver and then rushing with a big army to finish the game.

What is your reason that you are strong against Zerg?
- When I got my fundamentals of starting with a double-nexus, it was easier to counter the builds that my opponents chose, which made it more comfortable to play. I only need to think that I can do better than others and be able to micro well. I also do have certain techniques in my microing.

Your game against Jaedong during the MSL when you beat him with a dragoon rush was very impressive.

- To be honest, that happened at a time when I was struggling internally and was wondering what kind of build to use. So I asked those around me and then a player named Kim Min-su, who I had known since we were amateurs told me about a build that he had. It was a build that he had coveted until then but then suggested I use it and see how it goes. It seemed pretty good when I practiced with it and then edited it a little bit. I think I threw Jaedong into confusion because it was probably a build that he had to face for the first time ever.

Recently, Protoss plays have used a similar build where you skip corsairs, warp in a lot of gateways and then beat the Zerg with a mass army of zealots and dragoons. It’s definitely something you must know right?
- After beating Jaedong, an optimized version of the zealot-dragoon build began to appear. At the time, I didn’t upgrade my zealots but these days they upgrade +1 attack and make zealots into much stronger opponents to zerglings. I feel like I’ve advanced the metagame a little bit.

It’s something that I’ve felt before but it seems like you have a lot of confidence in general. Is it enough that you do not cower before TBLS?
- They are definitely good when I play them but it’s enough where I think that they are opponents that I cannot beat. Rather than thinking about losing, I think about it as an opportunity to beat them.

Did you feelings change after losing to Flash in the 2009 Ever Starleague?

- Hmm, I felt that something was a bit different at that time. When I saw the supply depot simcity on the map Heartbreak Ridge, I knew something was different about him. My skill level at that time was lacking a lot.

You slowly declined after losing the starleague. You had a pretty poor record, even though you had gotten 2nd place.

- After losing to Flash, I only thought about getting to the finals as quickly as possible again. But in the next season I lost in the Round of 8. I guess I was as shocked as much as I was desperate? I think that was about the time when I went on a PvP losing streak.

When was the time when you started taking control?

- I should say that I haven’t pulled myself together yet since I haven’t advanced in the individual leagues at all since that time.

Cute, but with potential once unleashed, a powerful force just like Son Gohan?!

Although he fell into a slump for a while, Movie’s recent resurgence in the current Winner’s League shows that he has decided to climb up again. Whether it was increasing the amount of practice time or changing his attitude, there is definitely something different about him. After talking with him a lot, I heard something funny from Movie. It was about Son Gohan.

You mentioned that you had a bit of conflict with Coach Cho but if it isn’t a problem, please talk about it a little more.
- I heard so much from others but now that I think about it, I don’t remember much. I’m the kind of person who just moves along whether or not someone says something. At the time, Coach Cho told me to “practice more”, and he just kept saying that up to the point where I got tired of it. I got a lot of stress from it but at the same time it was nice that someone was there to say things like that to me. From then on I started to like holding conversations more. Sincere conversations. I usually get rid of stress on my own but after the tension with Coach Cho, I remember feeling that it would be really nice to have someone nearby that could listen to me and my concerns. I’ve only read the comic books “Dragonball” and “Slam Dunk” but my most favorite character among those stories was Son Gohan. But then Coach Cho always said that “you are like Son Gohan”, and it surprised me a lot.

That’s interesting. Now that I look at it, you have a lot of nicknames. Moviestar, Jin-movie, Gerald, even Princess…what is your most favorite nickname?
- If it isn’t given in a bad meaning, I like them all. Even “Princess”. For some reason, they were calling me “Princess” for a time. It wasn’t bad.

Movie was an avid soccer player in middle school.

That’s a good attitude. Let’s go back to more serious discussion. After the finals, you went into decline, struggled a lot, and then reemerged as a much more mature person. Recently, you’ve gotten attention after writing “sorry” when someone wrote a very mean comment on your mini homepage.
- At some point, there were no articles about me and no one in the community talked about me. The biggest one was when the commentators talked about the main players in our team and they excluded me. That was a big stimulus for me. Feeling like you don’t exist is very hard to cope with.

That’s true. Snow, who emerged as a strong Protoss player, took your spot so easily. Even though you are older than him, you must have felt some competition.
- When certain progamers start rising, others sometimes get jealous but strangely I don’t. It’s up to the point where I think none of it matters. It’s not about whether someone is playing good or playing bad, if I just do my best and play well, then we can both play well. It’s all about how I conduct myself. I am my own competition. I prepare well and I fight well.

How do you feel that you have a personality that fits well with being a progamer?
- I think long ago, I was pretty introverted and didn’t have any heavy ambitions. But I’m not only introverted, if I open my mind, then I start liking people a lot. But after becoming a progamer I became more realistic about things. I think that running together rather than running alone in the face of competition is a good thing.

It’s a good attitude. Anyways, you’ve been coming back now so I want to hear your goals for 2011.
- I guess my big goals are to win both a Starleague and a Proleague? And I can’t be a progamer forever so when I quit in the future, I want to be able to retire without any regrets. I want to look back at myself and be able to see my time as a progamer as a time that has helped me in life so I want to work really hard right now.

It feels like we’ve talked about serious things too much (T/N: because you keep asking for it?). Do you have anything you like outside of gaming?
- Just regular things. I like going to places where there are a lot of people and if I had gone to college like everyone else then I think I would have done all the things I have wanted to do. I also like riding the subway and the buses. Also recently, we went bowling and billiards with our team and our coaches and that was really fun.

Are you going to continue to leave replies to your fans’ comments in your mini homepage?
- Until recently, I didn’t visit my homepage that often but now I look at it regularly. I enjoy conversing with my fans through the homepage. If they rage on me, I acknowledge them if I have done something that is worth such a comment. What can you say when they say you are playing badly when you really are?

But there are those who say really bad things when they don’t know your situation and even when you are working really hard.
- No one ever acknowledges that you are working hard. No matter how hard I work, if I play bad in broadcasted matches, then I haven’t been working hard and I’ve played badly. You can’t do anything about it.

It seems like you value your fans a lot. I guess you are going to work hard to make up for the fans that you have disappointed?
- For now, I just need to get a good record. And at fan meetings, fans tell me that I don’t have much to say and it’s something that I’ve been thinking about (T/N: umm talk more?). These days, there’s a lot of jokes going around in our team but I think I’m the only one whose not having fun. Recently, I’ve thought about something. Me preparing a nonsense quiz for my fans during fan meetings and having them solve them. But it doesn’t seem very appropriate when I keep thinking about it and it’d be nice if you just keep asking me questions (laughs).

If I was a fan waiting for a fan meeting, I think it’d be nice to get a nonsense quiz. You should of course give a prize. If you have any last words or feelings that you want to share, please do so. Anything besides thanking your teammates for helping you or saying that you will work hard.

Now he is unafraid to strike poses in front of the camera.

- First, I want to say that it was fun doing a live interview. Progamers really have nothing else going on besides practicing and getting sent out in televised games but coming here into a café and having a conversation was fun and it was nice to organize my feelings and thoughts by having an interview such as this one. I thought “at that time, it was like that” and now I don’t want to make those mistakes and instead now I have a determination to do better. Right now, everything is just really fun. Practicing is fun and playing in broadcasted games is fun too.

I feel like I’m getting a lot of attention again. There are a lot of people who say nice things to me and honest advice to me and I just want to thank them because they help a lot. If you have anything to say to me, I am always ready to listen. I have a lot of things to tell my fans but now that I have to right now, I don’t know what to say. I don’t want to just say something formal like “please cheer for me because I will work hard”…ah, I really don’t know. I can’t express myself well but I just want to make sure that my fans know that I am very thankful to them.

It wasn’t a very long interview but I hope it was a conversation of “sincere talk” that Movie enjoys. Also after doing this interview, I heard that Movie had shown another good performance in Winner’s League, which made me feel good. Rather than a typical innocent character, a more mature Son Goku, no, I anticipate a boundless Movie with great potential.

Much, at the time one of the older hyungs in the team, said “he doesn’t just look like a bear, he is a bear”
Much obviously has never seen, or met Incontrol.

Other than that, thanks for the interview very much!

Movie is a great guy, and interviews well. I was sad to see him fall off the face of the earth after losing to Flash in that one Starleague finals.

Movie!! I really felt for him when he received that really BM comment and all he had to say was sorry. I can see his character in the way he plays during the games, I feel that he has a lot of potential still and can go further. I wish him more success in his games, and that he becomes a core player for Hite. I really hope he can show more inspiring PvZ too, it's my favourite match up to watch of his. Of course, he should definitely work more on his PvP too, seeing that it is now probably his worst match up...

In any case, great interview! Thanks so much for translating this, white_horse. I really appreciate all the contributions you've made thus far!

It's nice to see (P)Movie doing well. Didn't know he was so articulate and motivated. Thanks for the translation! Even though he's had some setbacks in the past, he's a player with a lot of potential and when things work out for him, it's nice to be a fan and cheer him on. Here's a video I made from the recent Hite Entus vs. SKT1 game where Movie played against Fantasy:

I don't care about Bisu's PvZ or anyone else's PvZ, but Movie is the manliest PvZ player in the world!
