Intel is sponsoring the GSL. More specifically, this GSL is called the "second generation Intel Core GSL" (which is a lot shorter in hangul), where "second generation core" just means the i3, i5, and i7.
The remainder of the press release doesn't have any new information, except that these guys will be performing at some point during the GSL (thanks Selith).
An aside: I have a hunch that Intel is also sponsoring whatever Inc's big announcement is, so essentially everyone should run out and buy an i7 asaply.
Hm, looks like GSL Mar. hired that k-pop girl group, "Secret".
"As a note of interest, GSL Mar. will feature girl group "Secret" (among many other planned programs), who have become famous recently after having achieved no.1 spot in the pop music program rankings with their song, "Shy Boy"."
I'm sort of the computer/tech support guy for my friends/family circle and I always recommend people to buy Intel, and I always tell them it's because Intel's better, but really it's because they support SC2 so much <3
Hmm... I smell a little advantage for those guys playing on the SlayerS clan...
In all seriousness, it's great to see big corporations getting involved in e-sports! More exposure for everyone and everything involved, exactly what we need in order to get SC2 out there in the mainstream!
I love seeing Intel being so involved in sponsoring. I've been wanting to upgrade to a sandybridge pretty soon, just giving me even more reason to do so.
Also cool they are getting the kpop act there, seems to work well in getting people.
On February 18 2011 14:02 gostunv wrote: what happened with those intel chips that got recalled?
Sandy Bridge processors themselves are OK. The SATA controllers were messed up on the motherboard (using specific controller). All the affected boards were recalled, and the revised version is set to be released soon.
Awesome seeing Intel coming back and sponsoring GSL March, though does this imply that Sony isn't going to be the sponsor this season?
Nevertheless, Intel has been a long supporter of e-sports after sponsoring past GSLs, the old GOM Classic BW tournament, and SlayerS_BoxeR, so it's great seeing them again.
Also, I'm very interested in seeing more Kpop in GSL. Perhaps having Secret perform at the GSL finals will draw a bigger crowd. Considering that they had IU announce player names in previous GSLs, perhaps they will have Secret do the same.

either Sony Ericsson was no longer interested in sponsoring GSL and GOM accepted whatever bid Intel gave them (bad outcome) or Intel outbid Sony Ericsson to sponsor GSL (good outcome)

Me to!
Intel is so sick, they are a top hardware manufacturer who supports e-sports. I need a new motherboard and cpu, I am going Intel.
As one of the PonyTale issues says, we really shouldn't get too excited about a company like Intel sponsoring the GSL. What we really want is more mainstream companies sponsoring it, because it will mean the GSL has attracted enough mainstream attention for them to justify it.
The day I see the first Pepsi GSL, or Coca Cola GSL, or even the Cadbury GSL, is the day I'll be super fucking happy.

Aren't we all doing that? The whole of TL.net should cover at a good chunk of the western world population. Good move from Intel.
You know, Intel has been sponsoring a lot of eSports and SC2 in particular lately. I have to say that I've been really impressed with them. Keep it up, Intel!
I'm already of the opinion that Intel is the way to go for processors, but now they've cemented my loyalty with all they've been doing and the desktop I get soon will definitely have an Intel processor.

you're the man LOL I've always recommended intel too (although I'm not really a computer guy) but it's because I have friends working at both intel and AMD, and they have discussed that intel is ahead for the next few years to come.

I think it means how does switching from one incredibly rich sponsor to another incredibly rich sponsor effect the end product (if there is any effect at all).
(Hooray?)
I was just wondering if Intel is better sponsor than Sony
Nice move, Intel Sometimes I had wondered if advertising really is worth the money they spend, but then I got this "I gotta buy Intel" -urge that made me realize...yes, things like this pay off.

Now I really wish Idra was in Korea. Then we good potentially see Idra (brought to you by Intel) play SlayerS Boxer (brought to you by Intel) at the GSL (brought to you by Intel).
I posted about this in the February StarCraft 2 General Discussion thread a couple days ago.
Before the GSL March page was actually "officially" up and it wasn't linked yet, it said it was the Intel GSL March. Then, the next day, the page went up and Intel was nowhere to be found on the page.
I had thought maybe they pulled their sponsorship or something but now I actually don't have any explanation whatsoever.

I don't think there really is a difference in terms of the actual GSL. Companies sponsor major events in an effort to advertise their own company more; its essentially a huge billboard for them to make money.

I do realize the difference. I just found it funny that he mentioned the possibility of a "Coca Cola GSL" when there had already been a Coca Cola OSL.
Considering that Pepsi is a co-sponsor of GSL and that Coke already has had experience with SC, it's not too far-fetched too see them go farther with their sponsorships. Heck, considering that Hite, sponsor of Hite Entus, is a beer company, it would be awesome and funny to see more beverage companies try their hand at sponsoring SC.
Edit:nvm nasl it's irrelevant in this thread This is great news! The more sponsors are interested in the gsl the better it gets ^^! Also kpop => genuine starleague lol.
I would say there's a difference for the GSL, i.e. the contract with Sony wasn't as 'big' as the contract with Intel, otherwise I don't see there any any incentives for GOMtv to change their sponsor that often (unless the contract itself runs out, we don't even know how long the sponsorship lasts..could me only for 1 month/1 GSL).

Dhalphir likely had BW Starleagues in mind. That's why it looks silly for you to let him know about Coca-Cola's sponsorship.

Yeah I don't feel like this is big news, pretty sure Intel has been with them from the very beginning.
In fact I was surprised when Sony Ericsson sponsored GSL 3, I was like whaat isn't it sponsored by Intel already.
MSL gets some noob group Dal Shabet. GSL get's Korea's current hottest girl group. Where are all the haters talking about how unsuccessful GSL is now eh?

I once almost recommend a buyer to buy ZOTAC instead of some no-name brand because I knew it from a SC2 sponsorship. I managed to stop myself before saying anything, so it seems my mind is still my own.
I hope more companies can open their eyes and see this strong demographic: men below 30. Intel has really branded themselfs in our minds. When i think of processors i always think of Intel first and will probably think that way for many years to come. There are alot of possibilities in e-sports for companies to make a stand and become #1 in their branch like Intel. Like mobile phones, graphic cards, RAM, motherboards, computer screens, console gaming boxes, etc. But ofc you cant sponsor 1 event and hope thats enough, Intel is putting down alot of money in esports compared to other companies and i think it will pay off.
Once a gamer always a gamer and a gamer is probably the best costumer for new technology.

By that logic they'd be bigger than OSL too which had Rainbow.
MSL is sponsored by some file sharing company lol, what did you expect. Also a ZvZ finals isn't as hyped up as a regular final, lesser known players etc.
i watched the GSL March trailer and I thought it was really underwhelming.. They need it to be more hype-y and less cutesy. Just wanted to throw that in to discuss.
Intel sponsor is nice, just like Sony was. I kind of liked Sony more though because at least they are not pc-related. Now that intel is sponsoring gsl, iem, dreamhack, (maybe even MLG also?)... It seems e-sports has all their eggs in one basket. What is to say intel is going to stick around or stay loyal to sc2?
Well Intel is another huge boost in the GSL .. Along with that Korean pussy group , i really think that Starcraft2 is going to surpass SC1 in the next months.. I just hope that blizzard doesnt suck and releases Heart of the Swarm this year or in january 2012 because nobody wants to wait to much...
^^ SC2 even though I never liked it that much its good to hear that its making e-Sport known more. I'll try to start to watch SC2 VODS from now on. I just hope that blizzard and KeSpa could coexist.
Glad to see Intel keeps investing in e-sports, big names like that and others will surely follow. They'll be getting my custom for sure. I take it GSL sponsors are decided on a per season basis then? Wonder if that's on purpose or not, but glad they bagged another good one.
And omg what's up with all the big e-sports news this month? O_o I'm not complaining mind but wow..
I was wondering about this earlier today actually, as I noticed there was zero sponsor logo's on the GSL March League banner:
Open Season 1: TG Sambo / Intel
Open Season 2: Sony Ericsson
Open Season 3: Sony Ericsson
GSL January: Sony Ericsson
GSL Team League: No Sponsor
GSL March: No Sponsor
Although as I just refreshed the page now, the text beside the image has been updated to say:
GOM TV presents 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ GSL Mar. following GSL Jan. 64 Code S & Code A players, who were selected through the fierce competitions during GSL Jan. and Up and Down matches, are ready to battle it out to claim the title of the best.
The bold part wasn't there half an hour ago so I imagine the image will be updated with an Intel logo soon. Yay Intel! <3
On February 18 2011 13:53 dtz wrote: didn't they sponsor the 1st GSL as well? is GSL sponsorship contract basically monthly?
Yeah from what I understand every tournament is sponsored in itself, it's run by GomTV and they find a sponsorship partner that payes sponsorship to get their name/products on the show and tournament.
pretty nice, will get a next gen ssd by them for doing this. Still going with AMD mobo and cpu though since competition is good
I wonder if this has anything to do with IEM getting less money for their next big event, intel spreading it out and investing big into several tournies instead of investing pretty huge into a few.
Thing im wondering though, is Sony Ericsson still sponsoring, or are they completely out? Because it seems it's an 'Intel-named' tournament now. Though this is a huge step for GSL/SC2/SC2Korea, great news.
Finally, a Kpop band to open up, something we've been missing to turn this into a real starleague. The super bowl wouldn't be so super if there wasn't a half time show, it would just be a bowl, and a starleague isn't a star without a kpop group, it's just a league! Also, it's great to see a corporation as big as intel sponsoring the GSL.
I bet Tasteless says: This is the GSL sponsored by our wonderful sponsors: Sony Ericsson since he's been saying it for so long. Tasteless then gets fired.
It's an interesting thought, intel sponsoring a tournament. Once SC2 gets to a reasonable size, if GSL is profitable for them, they could expand their sponsorship to the US (well, they already sponsor a lot of stuff, but to be a more primary sponsor)

They may sponsor again in the future. I think it works exactly the same way OSL and MSL work. You have the Bacchus OSL, the Korean Air OSL, Ever OSL, etc. Every tournament can have a different sponsor, although that doesn't necessarily mean it will.

going off the last few years i would LOVE a superbowl that didnt have a half time show.... not sure if that affects your analogy or not

QFT. I'm definitely excited about seeing a kpop group get involved with the SC2 scene but I'm sad that we won't be seeing IU; although I'm sure she's incredibly busy with her drama ^^
But regardless, this seems like fantastic news for the E-sports community; whether you like Secret or not, having Secret perform will definitely increase SC2's visibility.
Sure this sounds cool intel sponsoring GSL but I would much rather have them sponsor the scenes more in the US and EU and help grow the scenes more here rather them dumping money into that monthly tournament and a lot of our foreigners are now comming back here after code A's beautiful prize pool.
Intel sure knows their marketing, SC2 fans will blindly spend £100 on a keyboard because they know a few pros use it (I know because.. err, I might just have found out about Filcos that way). If Tastosis starts talking about the awesomeness (if it is or not is irrelevant) of the i7 I'm sure more than one person will highly consider Intel the next time they buy a CPU.
Oh and then there's the vocal minority who'll buy Intel only because they're "supporting e-sports" ^^

Yeah I was actually planning on buying a Dell XPS 17 since I'm moving to Japan in 3 weeks, but the computers got recalled due to that I ended up going with the XPS 15 instead, seems it should run SC2 just fine without any graphic lag at all on medium settings or so... wonder if it will lag connecting from Japan though =/

The connection between Japan and the US is excellent, no need to worry.
Didn't Intel also sponsor Boxer? I've always been a Intel user, and this confirms it. They scratch my back by supporting esports, I'll scratch theirs by continuing to buy their awesome products.

It's not the cores, it's the (primarily) Sandybridge boards which have a design flaw (voltages) which will result in the SATA ports failing prematurely, and only if your board shows "Intel (R) 6 Series". The x58 chipset and below are fine, at least at this point in time .
Intel should not have bough MacAfee, they should have used those money on eSport instead imo but nice to see they still got some spare change. Just sad i allready got an i7 and i don't need another one expect if it was 980x (only got 960 )

Probably was partly because I lived in a dorm though and a lot of people were often DLing stuff etc though

If Intel spent the $7B they used on McAfee on esports instead, nobody would know what to do with the money. Honestly, an organically grown organization that slowly builds up in viewership and popularity is much more stable than something you throw money at. Big wads of money make for bad decision making, and it'd wind up looking like the superbowl halftime show.
