Welcome to the third 20Q20A! SjoW chose his fellow country man, MorroW, to be the next person to be interviewed - so here he is! MorroW is no stranger to TL.net, he has been a long time poster and we even got a chance to sit down with him after his IEM Victory. MorroW has been rather silent recently, so this interview provided an excellent opportunity to catch up with him and see what he is up to these days
Let's get to know MorroW a little bit better:
1) What are your favourite and least favourite matchups to play? I enjoy all the matchups a lot - but there are a few match ups that I don't like in the early game because there is more luck involved than other matchups. In particular, tvt and tvp in their current state are bit more luck based than the other match ups (that I play) at the moment
2) What have you been up to since IEM? Playing online tournaments, doing well. Been starting to slow it down a bit more so I'm playing less tournaments to get more time to practice. School is consuming a lot of time as well.
I've been working a bit on my micro tournament map, but the latest patch screwed balance over so badly that I have to update a lot of levels
Also, of course I'm fooling around with Zerg and now that dsrack has just finished, I will switch to Zerg now. I will keep playing Terran in tournaments, but I will devote all my practice time into Zerg. During dsrack I beat many high level players and even some top players with Zerg after only having played about 50-150 games, so I'm very confident that I can be successful with Zerg.
3) Have the patches changed your playstyle significantly? I started playing more passive overall and less pressure based. MMM drops or Hellion harass and all these classic things Terran players do have been nerfed a bit, but I think it's nice to kick back and play more macro-oriented anyway
I have been losing more games since the patch for sure, but its just because of the early game since I don't have any solid openings. I think classic builds like reactor hellion vs zerg is not very safe or solid any more.
4) What has been the most interesting change in strategy since release? Well there's been so many stages in strategy since release, even without patches. Most development is happening because players are improving and learning, not that patches are being released. I see a lot more macro-oriented play styles nowadays and I think that is a good thing
5) Is there anything you are looking forward to in the future? I'm definitely looking forward to LAN latency and chat channels, I don't think its confirmed though, but I really believe it will come sometime. Battle.net will be a lot nicer and you won't feel alone and games would have far better micro battles
I'm also looking forward to seeing how the current players will be in a year or two - who will fade away and who will manage to stay when the game gets harder. Very excited to see how players like Boxer and NaDa will do in sc2. Also, I hope that Flash and those guys try it out after the game gets more balanced :D
6) What do you think of the two new maps? They are more macro-oriented and seems to have nicer playstyles than the other maps. Many maps we have are all about massing units so you don't get run over by his masses of units - but on Jungle Basin and Shakuras the defender has some nice advantages which is really good for the game. I cant speak of balance since its so new but my guess would be that they will turn out pretty fine (comparing to blizzard level of maps)
7) Are there any players who have surprised you recently? It surprised me that our Liquid people did not manage to do so well in GSL 2 even after being there for a while now.
I'm also surprised that the level of play, mechanically speaking, is not higher in SC2. I thought this would be a very big issue with the game (mechanics being way too easy).
When it comes to SC2, I'm not often surprised since I spend a lot of time in this game and in the community so I was also surprised by some players on dsrack that they had such bad settings, like not turning off alerts, not having build grid on, playing on high graphics etc. I expected the level of play and dedication to this game to be a lot higher and hence harder to be successful in.
Oh to finish this I'm surprised TLO is switching to Zerg. I'm not sure why xd maybe because of the patch, who knows ^^ (although I guess its not a surprise that TLO is surprising me, I'm starting to get used to it xD). glgl TLO I hope you're abusing infestors as much as I am right now :D
8) How do you prepare for big tournaments? Practice ^^ I'm not one of those players who makes a new build just to win some money in a tournament. When I'm practising I'm just trying to be overall better instead of looking it as preparing for each event itself. You might win more tournaments by doing that but the method I'm using is by far better in the long run
9) What was the last movie you watched? And who was it with!? Who makes these questions lol :D it was "The Dark Crystal". It was really late and couldn't sleep so I dragged a movie from brothers computer, that movie was so fucking terrible that it became brilliantly funny and adventurous at the same time. The main character was some halfelf or some shit that needed to find some crystal else the world would explode or so. Epic stuff right there :p
10) (SjoW's Question) Do you think you're really gonna play Zerg in the big tourneys in 2 weeks? 2 weeks no. 2 months yes I'm improving my mechanics very fast which I thank SC1 Terran for, so right now my biggest "problems" are just the early game timings and the overall structure of the matchups of Zerg. I can learn them well by watching replays and other Zergs play and analyse, but also, after playing so much TvZ my Zerg is naturally good against Terran. ZvP doesn't seem to be too complicated to be honest, so it's going very well too. My most problematic match up is ZvZ but Madfrog and some other Zergs have been helping me when I ask them for help, so I think it will become better pretty fast.
11) Have you been keeping up with the recent tournaments in the USA? If so, what do you think of the results? No I haven't, I spent a lot of time on my own game instead. I don't think I would learn much at all from watching the USA games since I know their playstyles and most other things by playing with them myself. Since I just started playing Zerg for real now, I will try to catch all games I can with IdrA in it. I know no matter where he plays he will still create nice builds even if they are not nice games ^^
12) Do you think that the GSL is a realistic option for most top level gamers outside of Korea? No, mostly because I don't think many players outside Korea have the dedication, experience or motivation to go there and practice enough to compete in it. Skill-level wise, I think we have a few players who could do well but then they wouldn't fill the other requirements to make it far in Korean scene. After talking to Cloud at dsrack, I think he would be better off in Korea than Germany. SjoW, who is very successful here, has all free time in the world to play but he says he cant practice all day long which you will need to do to do well in the GSL
13) What do you think separates the good players from the best players? Your mind set and attitude towards the game. They look from a better perspective, but more importantly they believe in themselves.
14) What do you think about the "ideal faces"
?
15) Favourite album of all time? Don' t have^^
16) Make a bold prediction about Starcraft 2 They will nerf Protoss vs Terran because it will favour toss in a few months. (I'm terrible at tvp but I still believe in this)
17) How do you find the motivation to practice after going on a loss streak or losing some really frustrating games? Then I have more motivation than if I had won all day. I haven't been frustrated with this game in a long time, just sometimes I get disappointed, but I believe that will become better with time
18) Have you finished the SC2 campaign? Played about 1/3 of it. I think its really fun but I think its silly that you're always on a ship saving planets left and right. I don't know maybe its just me xd I suppose it gives that feeling because each mission is so short and they aren't really connected to each other. In a movie, all the scenes follow up by each other to make a great film but in SC2 the missions feel like more of a TV series with new episodes of the main characters each time.
19) Ever had any pets? We have a cat named sixten, he's been with us for over 10 years now
20) Who would you like to be interviewed next? And what do you want to ask them? Interview Naniwa and ask him what he thinks about marauders with stimpack :D no but seriously I don't think I've seen an interview of Naniwa and he is a man of many opinions (that he like to express). So I think an interview would be nice for the community to get to know him better. Both Naniwa and Cloud live in Germany in a Progamer house and I think its weird it hasn't had more attention. I would like to know about their daily schedule and how their life is in Germany overall. either one of them is fine for me!
Thanks MorroW for answering our questions You heard the man! The next person we are going to track down is Naniwa - so if you've got any questions for him please leave them in the thread Until then!

I'm surprised that so many top players never played or finished the campaign.

yeah. WE just started with the mp right out of the bat
xD jk, jk! hihi.

I didn't finish the campaign until a couple weeks ago. Was too busy playing online and getting addicted to the challenges!
|
Question 14 is now diamonds. I'm on a horse.
|
Q14 should be archived, or something.
|
Thanks for the interview, I really respect MorroW as a player and have been surprised there hasn't been much news on him.
|
ROFL, Nani interview incoming.
Going to be the best.
|
Nice interview, i'm glad to see that he's planning on sticking to Zerg
|
|
This is so awesome, but you already interviewed my three favourite players :D
But I am excited to read a little bit more about Naniwa.
Thank you for the great work!
|
In question 4 I wonder why would you turn the game alerts off? I always find it useful to get noticed when I don't pay attention when some of my units get attacked out of sight.
|
I love you so much for question 14
|
hahaha that question 14 was just epic. i bet morrows face was like this o_O?
awesome read cant wait for NaniWAH

I'm really trying to find a difference between Korean Japanese and Chinese, but I don't think its there. I think Korean girl looks more Chinese than Chinese girl.

Chinese girl looks pretty damn Chinese to me. The Japanese one doesn't look Chinese at all, the Korean one just looks twelve (but not very chinese either).

Question 14. That was so unexpected and amazing.

You know what is even more scary about question 14? The caucasian face is a slightly tanned version of keira knightley 0.o
Edit: maybe not, my memory is playing tricks on me!
|
I would love to know from Naniwa if he ever fears that his offensive behavior might hurt his career as a professional gamer.
|
so few good foreign Terrans left.
|
Great interview! Naniwa interview would be cool, but I think Gosugamers already did it.
|
good reading. I hope I get to play your zerg on IOL.
|
i Loled so hard at the randomness of Q14
|
i don't get the joke for 14, also where is the screenshot of morrow's match history playing zerg lolo
|
but seriously I don't think I've seen an interview of Naniwa and he is a man of many opinions (that he like to express)
ROFL. Nice interview. Seems to be a mannered and nice guy.

Morrow is so ridiculously good and his haircut is so ridiculously bad.
I'm interested to see how his playstyle will transfer over to zerg when / if he gets good.
|
it actually annoyed me pretty badly when he dodged q14
|
much love for morrow and kinda looking forward to the nani interview
|
I have no interest in the campaign really. I did the first mission but the characters annoy me.
|
q14 is so much win...(caucasian ftw)
unfortunately he dogded..
Guess that iem cologne stage experience with those two hot chicks has left a mark :/
|
21. Q: What are your achievements? A: I got 1st place @ IEM with a 5-rax reaper build.
I'm sorry but I really don't understand the hype about ths guy.
|
haha nice
Naniwa: "I just don’t like the Brood War players mindsets like MorroW who think people who come from WarCraft 3 are trash and the former Brood war players are gods."

You're right, that's the only thing Morrow has ever won!!

I love you MorroW :D :D :D
keep being awesome

That korean ideal face is turrrrible.
|
Did he really just call the Dark Crystal a "terrible movie " ,
Um that is a classic as far as puppeterinng is concerned ( geezer these kids nowadays if it isn't ,CGI it sux ,
Hello Jim Henson anyone , He is classic . lmao calling a Jim Henson movie terrible , he was the pinnacle of his field , The puppeteering alone makes that movie one of the best in it's genres of all time. The only thing that would have been more ironic ,is if he had said that in a film appreciation class.
That is like saying Ran is a terrible movie , both are different from today's normal format , of course todays' formats are geared toward poeple with ADHD

All the switching to zerg is a turn off , nice post none the less
|
Lol . I believe boxer more when he talks about sc2. Sorry MorrroW
concerning mechanics and stuff btw.

only thing i cant understand is that he think they will nerf protoss when i see soon no protoss in top16 gsl
|
I'm going to ask a stupid question: but what does the building grid do?
|
On October 27 2010 05:27 CoR wrote: only thing i cant understand is that he think they will nerf protoss when i see soon no protoss in top16 gsl
David Kim said at Blizzcon they think PvT late-game is in favour of Protoss with their Collosus+HT usage.
|
Nice to hear from this guy again. I thought he kind of disappearead after IEM Cologne.
His answer to Q14 is gold.
|
On October 27 2010 05:43 Licmyobelisk wrote: I'm going to ask a stupid question: but what does the building grid do? It's an option in the gameplay settings that turns on a grid when placing buildings that highlights where you cannot place buildings. It makes it a lot easier to make tight walls and to place hatches, ccs, and nexuses too.

I love how morrow changes to zerg after they get buffed !
anyway it will be interesting to see his results in the coming months

On October 27 2010 08:54 zor.au wrote: I love how morrow changes to zerg after they get buffed !
anyway it will be interesting to see his results in the coming months IIRC Morrow announced his change before the recent patch. Quite a while before. When Zerg was still considered under-powered.
|
Morrow decided to switch way before the buff. If you wanna check this you can go read his post : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=157088
And i agree with him when he says sc2 is easy in mechanics (at pro lvl sc2 macro is easy) and he has some stuff to back up his words, he is not a random guy who love braggin, he is one of the best terran EU. But i think the game is too young to think we have already seen everything. Koreans are going to bring us some gosu micro soon (i think it's the only field where the game can evolve and change the metagame).

I'm not sure I understand what "switching" means. It seems like he's still playing Terran in every single tournament, and only playing Zerg ladder. To me that's not switching. TLO played Blizzcon as Zerg, (I assume) will play GSL3 as Z...now THAT'S switching IMO.
EDIT: Obviously I mean no disrespect to MorroW, I'm just a bit confused.

Great interview. Im kinda glad he change to Zerg.

i was aware he announced it prior to the recent patch but it was quite obvious(even before blizzard announced it) that zerg was going to get a buff.
Anyway like i said, its interesting to see how it goes for him as zerg

After googling the name, it seems the research was done by a Korean, hence more Asian faces there. http://beautyportal.co.kr/index.php?mm_code=45&sm_code=122

Question 14 is wrong in so many ways. For one, that girl's not even Chinese. She's elven.
|
Really nice interview, I'll always cheer for you MorroW \o/ <3
|
Nice read and Q 14 is god-like!
I d vote for ClouD over Naniwa given the recent news

Epic interview. Cool that he plays a lot of zerg too

THAT'S RACIST!!! Elven can be Chinese too!

naniwa interview can get interesting, thinking about how much people on here hate him. also morrow should go to korea!
|
Please, please, PLEASE interview Naniwa! With his passive-aggressive personality fueled answers, the TL response will result in several days' worth of F5-ing.
|
isn't naniwa the one who got kicked out of the eps.sc2 germany because of too many pp's? would be interesting to hear his oppinion on that... also nice interview...again... keep that going! pretty interesting, good work...
|
yes he got kicked out of eps germany AND he moved back to sweden now
ask him why he lacked the disciplin of showing up to matches at the right time, uploading reps etc if he wanted to take a full year off just to play starcraft... i dont get it ^^

Anyway like i said, its interesting to see how it goes for him as zerg One could only infer that you were suggesting Morrow changed his race because zerg are no longer considered the weakest race. There's simply no other way to read your comment. And yet he clearly stated a month ago he was considering changing, when zerg was considered weak. And now you're follow up to my reply is that you were already aware he'd said he was changing earlier but, hey, c'mon - it was clear Blizzard were going to make zerg much stronger.
Makes me wonder why you made the comment in the first place. Clearly Morrow isn't just changing to whatever is the flavour of the month.
