i have an acer 8930g (laptop)
2.0ghz with 4gig ram and a geforce 9700m gt with 512mb
i can run the replay-only-version on medium graphics smoothly with little to no fps drops during battles, the only problem i am experiencing so far
is MASSIVE overheating. makes me worried wether i will be able to run sc2 at all, because in 5 minutes of watching a replay, my gpu temperature goes from 50° to 95° until the laptop shuts off.
anyone else experiencing this? is it a software based problem? no other games so far cause this.

Thinking about buying the Samsung R580-Hawk notebook: Intel Core i5 520M 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Nvidia GF 330M amazon link
It should run sc2 fine, right? I don't need high quality settings
|
snowbird that will be fine.
Overheating in a laptop GPU is nothing new ganjazerg. Laptops have insufficient cooling so they can and will overheat. :/ You can try drivers, but chances are that SC2 Beta is just causing your GPU to overwork itself because it isn't fully optimized.
There are also ways to cap the max FPS you can get which could also help if your gpu is overworking itself to like 100FPS when you only need 60 or so. Check the battle.net SC2 tech support forums, there should be a thread about 5 pages long withe more info.

Hey Im sorry to ask again, but what could I expect from this laptop again?
Asus x83vp-a1
2.53GHz Intel P8700 Core 2 Duo Processor 4GB of DDR2 RAM 500GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM) ATI HD4650 Graphics with 1GB DDR3 VRAM
Could someone tell me like smooth on medium, choppy on high, unplayable on ultra or something along those lines and maybe even possible FPS's. Thanks a ton

i just wanna know what knowledgeable hardware geeks like Ghermination and FragKrag think of this site, purely from a prices perspective, when it comes to shopping for hardware;

I assume you're looking at the PC core i7 system that thing is garbage Base configuration, the cpu and MB are roughly $450 (less if u have a microcenter nearby), GTS250 is roughly $130 I think, 350 no name power supply (~$60), 3gb of ram (call it $60), 320 gb hard drive ($40), DVd burner ($20), windows ($100) total like $850 for components, building it is not worth $300, plus that computer kinda sucks too. I hate micro boards, that power supply will probably die in a week if your comp boots at all (those components are between borderline to way too much for a 350 W psu). You could build something way better for the same price

I'm guessing smooth on medium and fairly smooth on high.

3GB of ram is $90-100
that PSU should be fine
However, yeah that is a terrible fucking build. If you are going to build an i7 LGA 1366 computer, build it right. Don't skimp on mobo/case/psu/GPU/anything else just so you can get that shiny i7 920 processor. It's not worth it. If you don't have 1.4k+ to spend, don't get LGA 1366, stick with LGA 1156.
|
eh i dunno if you have to spend THAT much. My friend built an i7 computer, gpu slightly underpowered but at his monitor size (20") it didn't really matter, for around 1k. It's definitely doable
|
No it isn't
There is no point in building a 1k i7 for gaming if you are going to spend under 1400. If you skimp on motherboard you lose the i7's main allure, and if you skimp on graphics you just bottleneck your i7. If you have around a 1-1.2k, there is absolutely no reason to even consider a LGA 1366 config because a LGA 1156 config will get better performance.
Processor + Decent mobo = $500 GPU = $300 PSU = $90 RAM = $160 Windows 7 = $105
|
Add a 5850 instead of a 5770 to my friend's build, remove windows 7 if he were a student, and you have a completely capable i7 build for around *edit* $1100 if you're including a 24" monitor or ssd then of course the budget goes up
|
That is a special situation though. Not everybody can just go "i shave off $100 because of free windows 7".
Again, he probably skimped somewhere. The lowest budget I would say for an i7 that includes Windows 7 is 1.3k
500 Proc + mobo (which is actually skimping on the mobo a bit) 300 GPU 90 PSU (which is actually skimping on PSU a bit, you want at least a 650W with decent 12V rail + 4x 6 pin config so you can use that board to its full potential) 160 RAM 90 Case 100 Windows 7 90 HDD (1tb hdd should be self explanatory) ~1.3k
Optional stuff that I would buy would be like aftermarket hsf which is around $30, and a SSD drive.
Why ssd? Because the largest bottleneck is the HDD, and the SSD removes that bottleneck. I don't want my $1.3k computer to take half a minute to load apps and shit after it boots.
Again, if you don't plan on upgrading to enthusiast SLi/xfire graphics and an insanely fast machine why go LGA 1366 anyways? LGA 1156 + i7 860 will do the exact same thing on just about every benchmark if it doesn't come out ahead by a bit. The LGA 1366 has two main advantages in that it supports triple channel memory (irrelevant in gaming), and that it supports dual PCIe 2.0 X16.
If you aren't going to upgrade to a high end PCIe 2.0 X16 SLi/xfire or build a workstation with huge amounts of RAM, what the fuck are you doing with a LGA 1366 in the first place?

Anyone has any thoughts on avadirect.com as a place to shop for hardware?

I currently have this shitty situation. I am sharing a beta key. i want to play. I have 2 graphics for quad displays. One is a Nvida GeForce 5500.Another is a ATI Radeon HD 3600. the ATI is the better one but sadly it only runs on the NVDIA without an error. I get this weird error while trying to run on the ATI. The nvidia one is obviously underqualified to play SC2 but i cant play sc2 on my good graphics card. anyone how to fix so that I can run on my ATI card? im getting this really weird message when i try to run it with my ATI card

hey was wondering if someone could help me with this. All my specs for my comp are way good but my graphics card blows. It is an ATI RadeonX1600 128mbvram, will it be able to run SC2 even if its lowest setting?
|
The mobile version won't run the game, and I don't think your desktop version will run it either. Weird to see a 'way good' comp with such an old and weak video card :x

Can i run SC2 if not what do i need to upgrade??

i'd probably buy a new monitor first, 1080p. then graphics card, anything mid-range should play starcraft2, then if gameplay still sucks and if you have a 64bit OS, then another stick of ram.
