I am not really a gamer, just want one for bw and sc 2. I am thinking aobut lenovo...reliability is important to me. Neither neither neither neither.
Alienware has had decently priced PC's in the past, but for the most part they charge too much. Cyberpower, ibuypower, and all of the sites with that cheesy layout are 100% scams, and all of them have the same core owners, running from different locations. Do NOT buy from them, or you will regret it.
I've found much worse review columns where hundreds of people slam the sites, but can't find 'em now. Here's a decent example, though:

-- "Ordered a very high end system in January of 2007 ($1700- no monitor) and have had nothing but problems since. Showed up with major restart problems, cycling without starting up, etc. I have sent it back to them 3 times for repairs with zero success."
etc

ok thanks. I am not good enough to build one myself; would you suggest HP?

Hmm, well the thing is, I have absolutely NO CLUE where to find notebook CPU's as well as how/what one to upgrade to (like I can't go straight to a P series etc or w/e).
Any help that anyone can provide, possibly?

Here's some guide I googled on replacing Laptop CPUs. Just make sure your model doesn't sodder your cpu directly to the motherboard. http://www.pcworld.com/article/148910/replace_your_laptops_cpu.html

Pretty much this
Perhaps you could contact HP/Compaq to see if that model's cpu has been soldered, or is upgradable?
As far as which proccessor specifically you can upgrade to, you need to keep the same TDP, FSB, and socket
all of these will work http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340759 1686643088&name=800MHz&SpeTabStoreType=1

I've bought two computers from Ibuypower. One a gaming laptop and one a gaming desktop. Both tailored for my needs. Both arrived immaculate and worked perfectly. I've had the laptop for almost 2 years now and it works wonderfully still. It wasn't that expensive either and for what I could have priced it with newegg I got it about the same price.
For the desktop, I love it. I could have built it cheaper myself, but I'm lazy. I recommend Ibuypower. Also, Best Buy, Wal-mart, etc. carry Ibuypower also, but I recommend using their site as you can custom tailor what you want. Not everyone who can build computers wants to.

What site would you guys recommend for building your own system? Sorry. Newegg (www.newegg.com) is perfect for that, i do it out of boredom all the time. This. I used NewEgg to build my entire machine. Great selection, cheap prices, accurate and fast delivery every time.
I third this. While I've done business with other online vendors over the years, I too have found Newegg to be the best overall, with great prices, product selection, and the best customer support. No-hassle returns, be it that your purchase was defective or you've ordered the wrong type memory, they take care of you.
Though you can sometimes find cheaper stuff by using pricewatch.com, it's a safer bet overall to buy from the Egg.

wut. So you're saying that the 250gts is G92 like the 9800gtx+ and the 8800gts? really? I didn't know that @_@

Alienware is by far the WORST computers my family has purchased. We have 3 in our family, each one crashing after just 2 years. They are loud, run extremely hot, and the cases give off no cooling. What good is water cooling if the water inside is boiling hot?

I have a late 2007 macbook:
2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Intel GMA X3100: Chipset Model: GMA X3100 Type: Display Bus: Built-In VRAM (Total): 144 MB Vendor: Intel (0x8086) Device ID: 0x2a02 Revision ID: 0x0003
Obviously, this will barely run SC2 if at all on decent settings. But, since I'm an industrial designer and a user-friendy Nazi, I'll probably be getting a Mac again for my next comp. My question is, how do the video cards compare between say a Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro?
I want to get a MacBook Pro next for the portability (comes in handy for school and freelance design work), but I also need a video card that can handle 3D modeling programs (Rhino, Alias, Solidworks, Hypershot) and Starcraft 2.
MacBook Pro, 15", Aluminum 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
(I'm going to get a WACOM Cintiq 21ux for the monitor)
^ Is this an integrated vid card? Is it worth it, or should I wait until I can afford a Mac Pro?
EDIT: Mac Pro Vid Card Options: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB ($200 more)

^^ honestly for gaming, if you only want a mac then go with the Mac Pro. I played wc3 on my macbook pro (with a usb keyboard and mouse of course) and the fan was constantly at max speed. It got so annoying, especially because I had a faulty fan that made an annoying buzzing sound when it sped up. Granted you probably won't get one, but I'm sure you wouldn't want a machine that is a small 15" screen that is constantly being ran at its full speed just for a game.
Since then i've built my own machine (which I recommend everyone now). And I must say it is the best 1200 bucks I've ever spent. I could have saved some money, but I wanted to go all out with my keyboard n mouse n stuff
Besides, when sc2 comes out i'm sure there will be 3rd party programs for it (like iccup, wc3ri, replay things etc) that are only for windows. And I don't see how Windows (especially vista/7) isn't user-friendly.

XP Pentium D 2.8 ghz 3 GB DDR2 (not sure of the speed) nvidia 7900 gs
I have a nvidia 9800 gt coming in the mail.. I'm just wondering how my cpu will fare, I know pentium Ds are a lot slower than core 2s.

For everyone looking to upgrade their video cards. If you can afford to wait until Q4 2009 or Q1 2010 and can bank 400-500$ in that time please wait. The new ATI 5000 series and nVidia 300 series will be coming out. They are a massiveupgrade over their predecessors. With a 35NM die and chip and boasting impressive gains it's a no brainer.
For one, I'm waiting for the new nVidia 300 series and getting SLI. I should be good to go for the next 3-4+ years with those bad boys. (Going to need to change to water cooling though.)

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q8200 [2.33GHz, 4MB L2, 1333MHz FSB] 6GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM 640GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive Graphics card 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4650 [DVI, HDMI, VGA] Monitor HP 2159m 21.5-inch 16 Full HD Widescreen Monitor
that comes out to around 900... is that a good deal?
it is on hp.com btw.
or should i wait ...

Thanks for your advice Raydog, but does anyone have specific advice on the video cards I posted for the MBP/ Mac Pro specs?

I am a rabid mac fan, but i think mac pro cost way too much to be get it to state of the art. Plus blue ray is not coming soon.
I am gonna get a pc just for sc2 @@ everything else an imac
