Skip the laptops for gaming imo.
they very weak plus they get to have overheating and other various problems.
Buy a cheap laptop for watching movies or listen to mp3 or for mobility thing.
I got a year ago a hp "gaming " laptop and i find out that the card was like 5 times weaker than the similar deckstop one for starters , let alone the various freezes i got . Also i got some porblems and i switch it for free.
1 year after my irelss modem got broke and no guarantee to cover it .

I definitely agree with you that if there are no special circumstances, laptops are not the way to go for gamers. They get hot, aren't that strong and the monitors are typically not amazing for gaming due to size and just general quality.
However, I will say that some of the newer laptops geared specifically towards gaming are quite good. I have a friend with a two-year-old gaming laptop (core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, 9800GT mobile) which runs SC2 just fine on medium, and it's so cool that he can just pop in for some quick LAN and online action at my place whenever we feel like it...
But yea... for gaming in general, get a desktop PC with a strong processor and graphics card!
|
We consider i bought that hp laptop with 9800gt and 1gb ram for 1700 euros...
After few months ( around 6 ) i bought the desktop i posted here which is like 20 times faster and durable for around 1500 ...

I am considering buying a gaming lap top, only cause I'm tired of bringing my Desktop everywhere. I used to have a Full-Towe case, cause I was 18 when I bought it and was like yeah BIG ASS CASE MAKES ME BAD ASS!!! So every lan-party was like a good work out for me.
I got Smarter and got a mid tower case now with a handle!!!! so I can carry it easy, but I just bought it and do not feel like carrying it around everywhere cause it came out to be a little pricey(college student here), and I'm not careful at all.
Here are the specs : i7-930 6gb ddr3 ram (i bought one that said DOMINATOR on it, cause i was like YEAH! that me!, lol) Evga x-58 GTX 470 (wanted to get the 480 but i already sold most of my possesions to get this comp so ran out of money) 500gb Hard Drive 850 watt Power supply(Rosewill) Cooler master Storm Scout case!
had the best time putting this one together...
So here is my question, well 2 actually
1 Anyone know a laptop that can match that comps performance? and if yes, am i gonna have to sell my car to get it?
2 Is a solid state HD for OS worth getting? Does it boost the performance a lot?

I also agree that a workstation is the way to go for gaming computers. right now I do not have any space in my apartment for a workstation setup.
Will buy a workstation for the next release of the SC2 trilogy...
But this one I bought now was not THAT expensive.. $1130

I had no idea that people were still having problems investing in a tower.
If anyone needs any hardware advice, feel free to pm me with budget, if you're upgrading your current comp or not, if yes then what are your current specs, and if you are willing to put it all together instead of just ordering one pre built.
Learned plenty of things over the years about hardware. Cheers.

the GPU driver overclock is unnecessary for SC2...works beautifully with no slowdown. Built this about 1 1/2 years ago...parts should be fairly affordable nowadays.

Thank you those who answered:
Thing is, I am going to college, and I am getting this laptop so it will last me all 4 years, but I want to be able to play starcraft 2 on ultra, since I should be able to as it is going to be a brand new laptop-
Keep in mind, I will not be buying it until a year from now, so there will probably be much better "stuff" on the market.

If you really want ultra on a laptop, I would recommend you get a buff one... or your fps will suffer a lot. Again - people have very different thresholds for 'acceptable' fps from my experience, but if you are like me can't make due with low fps, go for a computer with a high cpu clockrate, a minimum of 4 gigs of ram and a radeon 5850/5870... imo

Ok thank you. My minimal FPS tolerance is 26, as that is the average highest a person can detect.

Ok thank you. My minimal FPS tolerance is 26, as that is the average highest a person can detect. Unfortunately that's not the case. I can't explain the technicalities to you, but what I can tell you is that there is a huge difference between 30 and 60 fps, for instance.
Have you ever played Xbox 360? BF2 is 30 fps. MW2 is 60 fps. MW2 is much more fluent! In starcraft the difference is also very clear. Try capping your fps at 30, then at 60 (assuming you can actually run 60). It looks a lot better!
You can read a lot about it here:
http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=532349
But believe me, there's a difference, and it's quite noticable!

Is this going to be able to run SC2 on high / ultra settings? Please Respond!

Ofcourse it will, but you probably know that already -_-'
|
nah im an idiot when talking about what computers are capable of , thanks for the quick response though
|
Hey im just curious what settings you guys think this laptop i just got will be able to handle im not very tech savy.
6GB DDR3 System Memory
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5450 switchable graphics
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M Dual Core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
I'm hoping for medium, but im pretty sure that card is bad Also, does anyone know some tips to make the game look better by putting certain settings low and other higher? Sorry if i'm not clear! Responses would be appreciated!
|
Your processor is fine, the graphics card will hold you back though ... when the game is optimised you might be able to pull of medium settings with decent FPS.
|
Hey thanks i hope you are right. When you say the "when the game is optimized" Will that be when the retail copy comes out? Because i'm not in the beta.
|
My macbook pro 13 can run this game with 60+ fps... you don't really need a gaming laptop specifically to play this game!
