You have to understand how people see it though, right? You lose a best of 7 to him in a very public way only to later say that the builds he uses are inferior to standardized builds that win vs lower-level players due to the other players' unfamiliarity with them. There is a logic here that I understand, since you also have to consider skill disparity and other factors, but from the angle of "win at all costs" rather than "attempt to play at the highest level possible", it doesn't make any sense. "Why is F91 an inferior player because he wins?" people ask, while accusing you of attempting to rationalize your losses. While I disagree with this angle and its conclusions, I do see where these people are coming from. It might be useful to briefly consider a chess analogy here -- certain clever openings might bait an unsuspecting opponent into losing, even though that same opening would fail miserably vs anyone who knew how to exploit that opening's critical weakness. Of course starcraft and chess metagames are entirely different, so here the usefulness of the analogy ends, but losing to unusual strategies while attempting to master standard play isn't uncommon or even unexpected. F91 isn't a bad player by any means, he certainly won vs idra and all those koreans on iccup, but everything else being equal I don't see him beating the standard play of a higher-caliber player than idra in an extended series. I could be wrong and F91 has developed some non-standard build-orders that are actually stronger than the standard ones, but somehow I sincerely doubt it. Most of the discussion of this matchup is due to the ethnicity and personality of the player who lost, but dissociated entirely from this context I don't even think there would be much to discuss other than the metagame of standard vs. nonstandard in a series and how different players handle it. tl;dr I agree with idra that F91 does well on ICCUP at least in part for the same reason idra lost, though that's hardly the only factor involved. edited for clarity, need sleep | ||
