Perhaps you've had a different experience that leads you to believe otherwise. My experience is that there are a lot of stupid and lazy people, but there are also a lot of bright and clever people who get written off as stupid before you get to know them, even if it's just for a short conversation. I just got back from LA which seems to hugely shift the balance in favor of stupid people, but again I make that comment without reasonable evidence. My issue with this is people criticizing others for being ignorant, when they themselves are too ignorant to reach that conclusion correctly and rationally.

We have some of the best universities in the WORLD. I haven't met a single bright person who has been written off as stupid...a geek, yes...a nerd,yes.....but being written off as stupid because they're smart, never. If I see a man fiddling with an outlet in my house with a metal fork, I dont sit there thinking: 'hes sticking a fork in an electrical socket...but he could be a smart person...lets give him a chance.' Though I understand what you're saying...and obviously pre-judgment isn't the best way to go right.

There are a lot of people without college education that are quite intelligent. And people with college education who are morons. We haven't even outlined what being 'bright' means yet, so it's difficult for this discussion to go anywhere (and it's already way off-topic.) I'm pretty sure it's not measured by knowing there are 8 planets in the Solar System, however.

In almost every pub in NZ now they have 'pokies' (slot machines in the US). Some of these places you won't see anybody drinking, just sitting there in a zombified state putting money into the machine. These machines are hugely addictive and many of the people hooked on them are those that can least afford it.

Here's a pretty fucking important one I think everyone forgot about. Voter apathy is awful in the US. I'm not sure if it's just indifference, laziness or that people are too busy, but none of those are good reasons not to vote. In a good state, like Minnesota, voter turnout might be around 60%. It's often half that in other states.
Young people bitch all the time about the government, but politicians are not accountable to people who don't vote. It's a pretty fucking simple concept. No, half the country did not vote for Bush. 22% of the country voted for Bush, but since older and more conservative people are more likely to vote, they receive a disproportionate amount of power.
There's also a lot of young people who lie about having voted to seem cool or whatever, but they were really busy playing Halo or Starcraft that day. It's bullshit.
