No, I did exactly answer your question. This man is the worst president we have ever had in the history of the United States. In a perfect world, I would rather everyone take the initiative and gather information themselves so that they may make an informed opinion, but we all know that shit isn't happening in this country. So, if there is ever to be an opinion that I am glad is being mindlessly absorbed by the public, it's definitely "Bush sucks cock" (or whatever it was you said earlier)

Er, what's the deal with all this book stuff. Everyone is saying people are retarded cuz they don't read books. I don't get it, do books magically make you intelligent and media-literate? Do I need more books? What will happen if I don't read books, will I get scurvee? I mean, I read books, but just for fun. What's a book that will make me learn a bunch of cool words that make me look intelligent on forums? Will harry potter do? I've read those. Do dragon ball books count? What will reading a book teach me that watching Dancing with the Stars won't? What language should I read these books in? Are there any books about books? Maybe a "Books for idiots"? .. ... ...
I don't think they're referring to the fact that people don't read books, but mostly the mentality that people seem to have that reading books makes you a nerd, queer, geek, or whatever (I've actually had some people openly mock me when they saw me reading aSoIaF...cunts).

I think that's correct. Learning new things is considered "uncool" or "nerdy" these days. Stupidity isn't a problem by itself, the problem is that stupidity is considered cool by teenagers etc.
Intelligent people always do *something* to expand their horizon (for example, read various books). Dumb people never do anything new.

Disagree. Young people aren't reading as much, but adults are probably reading more than they were 10 years ago. Book clubs are pretty commonplace even for the people that watch Dancing with the Stars and I'm sure they can all tell you about the super popular books like Kite Runner or Snow or 1776. Plus people are getting more into documentaries than they have been before.

Honestly, I think most of the intelligence bashing is purely based on ignorance. You guys haven't traveled around and lived all over the country. You probably haven't traveled very far or know that many people within your own state. Probably somewhere along the line some comedian just said everyone below Ohio is an idiot, and naive people have been repeating it over and over again since then. People are dumb because they voted for Bush? Please, that's one of the most ignorant opinions you can have, right up there with the loud black women and monkeys comment. It's not like we voted on whether 2+2=5. Fox News? On a huge night, they may get 7 million viewers. 7/300.

Btw, Jibba, care to cite sources for your information? Or did you visit your grandma's and suddenly you're a sociological authority on reading habits in the USA? Adults are probably reading more than they were 10 years ago because book clubs are commonplace?

Tbh though, it's not a recent development. It's ALWAYS been this way. And that's why your argument is flawed. You talk about intelligence bashing, but sorry, the population has been and always will be about 10% intelligent, 90% stupid. That's just the way the world works. So, no matter how hard you argue, you're not going to escape the fact that the vast majority of humans are idiots.

And sorry, people ARE dumb if they voted for Bush. Anyone who takes the time to get informed on the history and policies that the candidate espoused and his actions in office would be hard pressed to vote for him if they had an IQ that got anywhere above 15.

P.S. I've traveled around and lived in plenty of places in the country, east coast, west coast, down south. It's all the same tbh. People are idiots wherever you go. There are dumb liberals and conservatives. Although voting for Bush is enough of a tag to 100% condemn you as ignorant.

Hi, I am going to criticize your use of uncited statistics. Oh hey, want to see some of my own uncited statistics? Weeeeeeeeeeeeee! Anyone who took the time to get informed on the history and policies that the candidate espoused would have had an equally tough time voting for Kerry. Honestly, if all you want to do is push around blanket statements then I'm not even going to bother. You can't judge a person's intelligence based on a single vote. Political propaganda tells you you can, but really you can't.

LoL, Jibba, if you have a decent argument then use it. If you'd like to hide behind inane positions like "If you haven't met and interviewed every single human in the USA and tested their intelligence in a comprehensive way (as of yet, not achieved by the vast scientific community) then you're not qualified to speak on the intelligence of people in the USA," then there's nothign to talk about.

By that incredible logic, you would also say no scientist can comment on e. coli unless they've examined every single cell of e.coli in existence under the most powerful of atomic microscopes. Your logic FAILS. It's pretty easy to get a good cross-section of the USA, and it's pretty easy to see that literacy, intelligence, and power of analysis have gone downhill. Even during the Colonial era, people were prided on how well-spoken and well-read they were. Nowadays? You'd be surprised how many people don't even know how many planets there are in the Solar System. In fact, most people think the closest planet to Earth is the Moon.

Sorry, but you're the one with his head stuck in the sand, hiding from reality around him. Take your rose-colored glasses off and try doing some actual research. Instead, you just spout garbage here, think it "sounds" rational, and try to condemn what others say merely because it doesn't sit right with you. It sounds extreme and sensational, so you reject it right? Somehow, nothing could ever be THAT BAD. It's just pseudo-intellectual liberal whining again. Sure. I actually invite you to say more, because all it does is further justify my point.

If you actually want to put down some real positions, I'd be glad to debate. But YOU are the one giving blanket assumptions saying "it can't be that bad. There are book clubs out there."

I'm with E goldman. You don't have to examine every single subject you want to chat about in a forum with the scientific method. Being an observant person and having a good enough memory is enough for things like that. This isn't the house of blood commons.
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

FUCK YOU I WILL NOT GIVE MY IGLOO TO ESKIMOS WHO TRAIN POLAR BEARS AND EAT BLUBBER

In all seriousness though, that law they're thinking of passing which allows the government to randomly check your computer/iPod/mp3 player for downloaded music and fine you accordingly makes me want to fucking slit the throats of a thousand cuddly little kittens.

Terrorism fear fad? Are you fucking with me? 19 men hijack our jets, crash them into three separate buildings, kill 2,974 innocent people, and we don't have the right to be afraid? And hell, that was just one attack. What about all of the other terrorist attacks that take place all over the world? Is this "terrorism fear fad" anything like the nazi fear fad Jews had in WWII?

Yeah no kidding, from what I understand the majority of revenue that bands make isn't from album sales, which go mostly to the record companies etc. but from the shows they play and the merchandise they sell. If this is actually the case and I haven't been misinformed, this whole bill is just an excuse to be in our houses, takin' our moniez.

Just a quick statement on the whole book things:

I think the thing about books (which you can also get from reading the internet assuming it is something that isn't retarded) is that it keeps your brain functioning and processing. With shit the way it is and whatever the percentage of kids is that are entering high school that read at like a 1st grade level, shit needs to be fixed. Does reading a book make you intelligent by default? Obviously not. I'll get more information browsing the internet in a couple hours than if I spent a week in a library. However reading a book allows you to slow down and not focus on shock and awe or full action paced things like on TV and you can really read and understand the material.

I actually have 3 Countries I get to bash seeing as I have lived in all 3!

For now I'll stick with my home country
USA

I'm from the Midwest, so I have to say, I probably deal with the dumbest people on the planet. I mean honestly, anyone who's favorite genres of music are Rap and Country....that just shows you how ass backwards shit is. Things I remember from high school are that we aren't proud to be intellectuals. Our country bashes the smart "elitists" and don't want their opinions. We want to live with stupidity and never come out of it. I mean I slept through most of high school, yet I tested better than 98% of the school. Teachers aren't paid shit, and their expected to train these fucking monkey kids that think being dumb is fucking hard or cool.

A message to kids out there that think the gangsta life is going to get you anywhere...grow the fuck up already and stop being a bane on our society. I doubt any of those kids read these forums. Listen I understand the dream of making money and doing little work, I am a poker player after all. However there is a difference between making money the way I do and still being somewhat useful to society and then being a fucking waste of life to the point that if I could travel back in time I'd fucking punch all their moms in the ovaries as soon as they got pregnant with them. Money is a good thing, but money without some sort of functioning brain means you'll probably just destroy your life and a lot of other peoples lives.

Our politics are so dumb right now they give me a migraine to even think about. Sure we have TV shows like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report that mock the government, but really, it changes nothing. Those shows aren't coming up with ways to fix shit, they are just mocking the shit that is going on. That is seemingly enough to keep the people happy "Hey the government sucks, but at least Jon Stewart and Colbert are going to have some funny shit to talk about!". Then there are the people who don't think are government is in the wrong, mostly religious right wing nut bags that should all be put in potato bags and beaten until they either realize they are dumb, or until they die.

People like Rod Parsley and John Hagee who are scared of everything and damn people to hell like they were fucking brought to heaven by God and anointed to tell people how to fucking live. Where the fuck do these fucking cunt bags get off. I have no problem with religion, unless they are a religion based on conversion. If you can't just be fucking happy and let other people believe what they want to believe without getting in their business, without getting in our schools, without getting into our governments, you shouldn't be allowed to fucking talk til you this little point out..."YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT ANYONE ELSE KNOWS ABOUT WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE!". I personally believe these are the cunts responsible for why America is so fucking stupid.

Here are my main 3 reasons -

1. The people that believe the shit they hear from people like them are fucking mindless sheep. They walk around spewing the shit they hear Sunday mornings and act like they have life figured out. Here is what they think life consists of...Either something good happened and God blessed them, or something bad happened and the Devil is working to bring them down. They are homophobic, technophobic?, brainwashing cunts.

2. People who have done away with the shit preached on Sunday mornings and have reverted to being the anti church, but can't really come up with an idea on their own. So what do they do? They start being the people you see who don't put "limits" on how they live their lives. Drug abusers, alcoholics, people who think they can do whatever they want because they think God is BS and they don't answer to anyone but themselves.

3. The people that spew Sunday morning rhetoric, while simultaneously doing shit they tell other people not to do. The fucking hypocrites, which I think is probably the biggest portion. They pick and choose what rules to follow and they still like to judge everyone else.

Obviously this doesn't cover everyone, but in the Midwest these people run rampant. Where are the "Hey religion has it's place, but it's not in every aspect of our lives, but we are still socially required to not act like complete fucking dumbasses and be somewhat useful to society" people?

I'm not trying to bash Christian beliefs, but honestly the shit just needs to calm down. Religion clearly was not meant to be part of our government or our public schools, and I think they people that are bound and determined to see it play a role in those areas are fucking worthless and need to shut the fuck up.

Also, the fact that everyone outside of the states assumes that there isn't anyone in the states that actually has a brain. I know this was mentioned before, but I'd like to reiterate that fact. Listen I know we do some dumb shit, but we are also the country that people come to for help. I'm not going to say we do a fucking good job, but fucking get your heads out of your asses. Sure we fucking nuked the shit out of Japan, sure we fucking start wars without just cause, but we also help other countries that can't defend themselves when a stronger country tries to take them over. Obviously we don't do it for every country, but you know, that is impossible. The fact is, and proven by this thread, every country has their fucking problems...except I guess Norway. Our problems just affect more of the world than most, thus we get more shit then most. It's just like the popular kid in high school. Say everyone knows you and likes you, but then you fuck up, that many more people know about it and that many more people start to dislike you, as opposed to the country that nobody talks to.

Every country has those citizens that think their country can do no wrong and that they are the greatest nation on the planet for some reason or another...well ok maybe not every country. Unfortunately for the US, our country ass kissers are a bit dumber than most, and yet they are more vocal than most as well. The US may be the "Greatest" nation on the planet in some aspects, but we are far from being a great country.

I also dislike how people jump on bandwagons to hate or like one thing. For example how everyone hates Bush so much. I don't hate him, I just don't agree with what he's done as president. That alone doesn't even make him a bad president. However, I think you definitely have a right to dislike or hate whatever someone if you actually know why, like the poster above who clearly listed several things he strongly dislikes Bush for doing. It's different if you know why you hate or love something, than if you're just doing it because everyone else is doing it.

Even if saying how you hate your leader is part of bashing your country, I don't think arguments were intended in the thread, just to say what you dislike, not to tell people they're wrong, which is silly in and of itself because they're just telling you what they see, so how can you tell them they're wrong, that they're seeing something that doesn't exist?

Yeah I agree. I'm ashamed to call Ohio a Midwestern State, I wish we were Atlantic just to avoid association; I live in urban columbus, and I guess most of Ohio is full of farming hicks and rednecks. Americans are very classist. Suburban people look down at urban folk as being poor slobs who don't deserve an education. They believe apparently in that theory of if you're poor it's because you didn't work hard enough, and if you're wealthy it's because you earned it. Of course, they just happened to be born in their position, and were given for free a decent education, good quality education buildings, oppourtunities and connections, etc. And because they avoid mingling with people different from them, they end up with strange very conservative beliefs which really don't even help them

This is more of a New York bash but I guess it could apply to the whole country.

It's definitely worse than I thought.

I still don't buy your last line. Having traveled to 37 states doesn't mean anything. Even if it is true that most people are stupid, it's simply something that most people can't possibly conclude on a rational basis. At best, you probably have a decent idea of the intelligence level of hotel staff, gas station attendants and waiters from those 37 states.

Well I lived in 20 states. You're right, I didn't spend my time with well-renowned scientists or any great philosophers I spent time with average americans; doctors, lawyers, professors along with people who worked at a 7-11 or Mickey D's or just basic outlet stores and offices etc. My conclusion is obviously based on my experience with the amount of people that i've come across...the overall intelligence in the american populace that i've been introduced to is not that great. Perhaps you've had a different experience that leads you to believe otherwise.

My experience is that there are a lot of stupid and lazy people, but there are also a lot of bright and clever people who get written off as stupid before you get to know them, even if it's just for a short conversation.

I just got back from LA which seems to hugely shift the balance in favor of stupid people, but again I make that comment without reasonable evidence. My issue with this is people criticizing others for being ignorant, when they themselves are too ignorant to reach that conclusion correctly and rationally.

Since when does knowing the number of planets in the solar system constitute intelligence? You're trying to draw people's intelligence from a presidential vote and the way they speak. I'm sure you love living with a massive superiority complex, along with most other internet goers who make similar statements, but it's honestly just bullshit.

I didn't say there were more smart or dumb people. I'm saying you've completely abandoned logic to reach your conclusion and are only further spurring the problems with society. This is basic epistemology here. Even if you are right, you're getting there the wrong way, which makes you fall into the idiot camp you're so vehemently against. You're making an extremely loose inductive argument, and have offered no reason to believe it is anything but that. Furthermore, a lot of people who make that conclusion aren't even using inductive reasoning. They're simply repeating what they've heard elsewhere.

I already admitted I made a mistake with the reading statement, because I'm not being an asinine little bitch like the other person in this conversation (you.)
