This may not be strictly American, but it pisses me off nonetheless.
People, generally college age people, get all up in arms about some issue, which is fine. Then, to solve the problem, and REALLY stick it to the man, they join a facebook group that vaguely protests the opposing side in its title...and thats it. All these dumbasses pat themselves on the back thinking, "I saved the people in Darfur, because that group just went from 543,319 people that don't actually do anything about the situation to 543,320 people that don't actually do anything about the situation."
Everybody protests everything, but nobody does anything worthwhile about it, so it all stays the same/gets worse.

TV in australia sucks...
Internet is just as bad, but at least they can't but bs on it...actually...its probably so slow so people revert back to TV so they can get brainwashed

I agree that books are too closely associated with intelligence in this day in age. Back before the Internet, books were the primary method of learning, and people were expected to read a lot of nonfiction. Now with Wikipedia, the CIA World Factbook, etc., books aren't nearly as necessary to learn things.
However, about the originally posted statistics (~40% of college grads never read a book again, etc.), I would agree with the whole "mindset" thing. Those who want to learn and are interested in learning about different topics are probably going to read a book on those topics at one point.

lol some of these arguments "against" reading, or if nothing else, attempts to say reading is irrelevant are just hilarious. Sure, you never have to open a book to learn. You can be one of those people who just hear about a little this, and a little that, and that's what constructs your worldview. Brilliant.
How do you argue with reading zero books? I don't care if people talk about "oh, I could read a trashy pulp novel, or a manga, but that doesn't mean I got smarter." If you read zero books then guess how many books of knowledge you're reading? Oh, that's right. Due to the laws of arithmetic that would be ZERO. ZERO books. Now if someone is reading 30 books, what are the chances of one of them being a book of something useful? ALOT more than zero.
And you know what? It doesn't matter what book you read. It will expand your horizons. A writer is not going to get published if he/she is bringing nothing new/interesting to the table. A book might not have all the info, but it will spark a person's interest enough that they'll be willing to go and research it. Does TV do that? No. Other than documentaries, TV is pure time wasting. It's low brow entertainment that doesn't spark interest in much at all. There are a few good channels like history, sci-fi, cooking, etc. But "primetime TV" is just garbage.
It takes time, concentration, and focus to read a book. Those are all things that are conducive to studying. Electricity, cable service, and a TV are necessary to watch TV. Nothing else. Books make a huge difference in helping people to develop their minds and thinking capability. The people who are crying so hard about books not being important are the same ones who never read a damn book. I wonder why they think it's not useful.
And sorry, Wikipedia is a great source for information, but it's a joke if you're talking about real study. Wikipedia is far from comprehensive. It's the equivalent of trying to become a physicist by reading the Encyclopedia entry on quantum mechanics. It gives the briefest of definitions, it is FAR from being much of a real learning experience. That is unless you're truly ignorant on a topic, then Wiki will teach you something.
But I guess the problem nowadays is nobody cares about learning at all. If it doesn't concern their job or their ability to get pussy/cock, then they just don't care.

I love my country, and I love living here, especially when I hear how things are outside of the country, but there's still plenty I dislike, mostly the people.
The school I go to is the best public school in the state (Ohio), yet it's in like the worst public school district. The country in general fucks the education system horribly. Kids are educated to be stupid slobs so that the media is successful, people care about celebrities, everyone is a bunch of ignorant xenophobic socially backwards animals. I don't do anything or put any effort into school, while being at a school ranked #276 in the whole country, and I get top grades in the "hardest" classes, and everyone tells me how great and smart I am, and it's only because everyone is fucking stupid. But it's not really their fault, because they're being bred to be stupid. Education is shifting from being a system to force Americans to compete and hopefully be superior (educationally) to people around the world (namely, smarter than the soviets) to being a fucking day-care.
I'm not allowed to think in terms of stereotypes or be racist or sexist at all even when I see these stereotypes overwhelmingly on a daily basis. My school district is 80% "black" and 20% "white" even though, everyone who's not black (asians, hispanics, which apparently covers everyone not "black" or "white") is also part of "white". People don't just think it's cool to be dumb, it really is cool to be stupid and be "gangsta". Half of fucking bnet even calls people their "niggas" and talks in butchered "ghetto" english, and half of fucking bnet isn't even just americans wtf. The majority of the people I see at school on a daily basis are aggressive black men/boys and shrieking black girls/women. I wish they sounded like chimps, they'd be easier to listen to. Most of the white people are worse, in that they actually copy this stupid behavior because it's "cool". My school is so ahead of the rest of the district, that they've decided to level out the playing field so we don't feel too elitist. They do this by dragging my school down to fail with the rest of the schools so no one looks "bad". It's fucking bullshit. The No Child Left Behind Act fucking butchered education. All it does is take kids who don't want to succeed, and put them in "good" schools to try and help them. But since they've been socially taught to not learn or succeed, all they do is bring the whole school down.
I'm supposed to compete with the rest of the world, but my country is socially teaching all kids to be stupid, so the media and education caters to stupid people. We really aren't taught to learn a foreign language. We have mandatory foreign language classes, but most of the time you really aren't expected to learn the language, just pass the class. The fact that you can pass a language class without learning the language alone is ridiculous.
Most of the country it seems like are fundamentalist conservative right wing morons who are xenophobic, homophobic, classist, and afraid of technology and progress. This results in the rest of the world out-competing us in every area. We've thrown aside the things that made us the most powerful country under this vague notion that we'll just always be the best, despite that we're slipping behind the world.
Since I'm American, any argument I ever make online is dismissed because I'm American. I'm not allowed to point out people wrong in my country, because it's not socially acceptable to be intelligent. I'm not allowed to point out people wrong outside of my country, because I'm an American slob.
I'm not allowed to be racist or nationalist at all because I'm American, but then people treat me like I'm racist and nationalist because I'm from America. There's this Catch 22, where the rest of the world won't let America not be ignornant fuckheads, but expects us not to be anyway, so we're just universally hated.
People inside the country whine that the government sucks, but they don't try to do anything about it. They complain how the whole politics system sucks, and protest it by not getting involved. People refuse to vote because there isn't a candidate specifically tailored to their own beliefs. You're not allowed to be in the middle, you have to be either left or right, and if you're not you're just hated by everyone. It's always left vs right, but both suck. The right are the fucking backwards ones, who ruin the country yet think they rule the world. They edge the country towards totalitarianism every chance they get. They're the people who read 1984, and say, Hey, this is a pretty good idea! Then there's the left, who read 1984 and say Man, we gotta protest this! Lets protest it by doing NOTHING, that'll show 'em! The whole Clinton vs Obama thing was ridiculous. They were basically the same candidate ideologically, yet people were pitting them against eachother like it was Bush vs Gore again. The people who supported Obama hated Clinton just for being Clinton, the same assbackwards way the Republicans hate Clinton for being Clinton. There's no difference between Republicans and Democrats, they're the same idiots just preaching the other side. Obama supporters are cultist like Ron Paul supporters are.
The country's hipocrisy rivals 1984's DoubleThink. Republicans yell at Democrats for doing exactly what the Republicans are doing. Democrats let themselves get fucked in the ass, and when they get some power they either shoot themselves in the foot, or do nothing at all, the great wait-it-out tactic lol.
People whine about the economy when they're still in fucking middle class despite the economy going to shit. They bawwwwwwww about gas being so high, but all that does is mean they have to remove luxury expenses. The lower class really is going to shit, whether they drive or not, because the price of food, electricity, gas (for house heating), and all appliances and services are going up, without wages going up, which only further hurts the entire economy. So people decide to counter this by whining, and doing nothing else. Instead of finding a way to fix the problem technologically, they just blame people for the problem.
You're so socially expected to do and have things that you're a complete enigma when you don't want them.
My biggest complaint is the technology thing. People are afraid of all forms of technology they don't already own, it's ridiculous. People look down on the sciences, even though the sciences is what brought them all of their creature comforts.
People are so un-laid-back it's retarded. Everyone is busy with their life-drama, if they're not busy watching soap-operas on tv. Reality shows are fucking retarded. Most movies coming out fucking suck too.
America is just flawed by being socially backwards, and by educating the new generations to be socially backwards. We throw out everything that ever made us great, and then try to bring the world down around us. Look at all the shitty things happening in other countries as result of the US? All this terrorism scare shit? And we're in a war and losing? We're the fucking United States who fought back the nazi regime to Berlin and we can't occupy an oil field in the middle of a desert? And the people we're occupying for some strange reason don't want to be occupied but we can't imagine why... Doesn't everyone like being occupied by Americans? Look at Israel, fucking up shit in Lebanon. Since when has Israel had the privillege to fuck up a war and come out fine? It used to be, if Israel lost a war they'd lose their country, so they didn't lose wars, and didn't start fights they didn't need or couldn't finish, but the US has made them so lazy they start random fights now wtf.
The United States just isn't capable of living not in a state of Cold War yet I guess. Everyone who was raised and educated in the Cold War is educating their children like it's the Cold War, except without any pressure to learn maths and sciences. Which just leaves everyone regressive and backwards about the Cold War present -.-
Then the rest of the world talks to us like we're crap and wonders why we don't like them, but still expects us to do shit for them, then complains we're too involved in the rest of the world's affairs.
Our politics in general is hillarious. McCain, a tortured war hero is condoning torture, lol. Kerry gets flamed for being a veteran by a draft dodger. Obama is called a terrorist, wtf. The right flames McCain the whole election, and when he wins the nomination he's suddenly their hero. Clinton has the nomination in the bag, then manages to do everything wrong assuming she's still won the election, and doesn't figure out she might lose and restructures her campaign until it's too late. McCain pushes and supports everything Bush made and did, but people prefer him because he's not black and isn't a woman. Then liberals start gathering around Ron Paul as their hero, even when he openly denounces the theories of evolution. Clinton supporters are such blind idiots they try and threaten Obama supporters by saying they'll vote for McCain over Obama when it makes no sense to do so, especially when Obama ideologically is basically just a more charismatic Clinton. People vote or vote against Obama because he's black, Clinton because she's a woman, why does shit like that even matter in the 21st century, in the land of oppourtunities and freedom?
People worship violence, drugs, alcohol, hate education, it's silly lol.
If you don't mind racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, a fear of progress and a tendacy towards social and technological regression, the United States is great! Atleast we accept our capitalism and don't try and call it socialism. Thread win? A lot of that kinda resonated in me even though I've never lived in America. Weird huh?
Pretty fucking spot on. Only thing is, it was libertarians, not liberals, who were behind Ron Paul =p

Well actually according to the NEA report reading hasn't increased at all in adults over the years for any age group. The 2nd link posted shows effects of television and reading combined. Purely based on the "intelligence" that i've witnessed in the 37 states that i've been to, I say the bashing is fair.

- i hate our unmatched self-righteous intellectual middle class, which drinks its hot chocolate with ginger.
-i hate that we are educated to be sissy wimps since ww2.
-i hate that the ideal man is supposed to be a woman.
- i hate all the mediocrity. same chances for everyone = make a cap for the good ones. ( i think thats changing at least).
- i hate how many people dont seem do understand that they are responsible for their lives. it is seriously a common attitude to think that you have a DAMN right on this and that and the fucking state is in his debt to provide it for you. you obey the state ( respectivly trick it to think you obeyed) and in return he cares for you. OH HOW I HATE THIS ATTITUDE. they want to move through a staked out path of live claiming their given rights.
-i hate the status quo and how every inch of political/structural progress is blocked so hard, its not even funny.
-the list goes on ofc

It's definitely worse than I thought.
I still don't buy your last line. Having traveled to 37 states doesn't mean anything. Even if it is true that most people are stupid, it's simply something that most people can't possibly conclude on a rational basis. At best, you probably have a decent idea of the intelligence level of hotel staff, gas station attendants and waiters from those 37 states.

I can't even begin to start. A lot of people hit it on the head, about a lot of certain issues. I live in the United States. I was born, and raised, but I am of Mexican descent as both my parents immigrated here.
However, in my opinion it can be described to one word, and one world only Ignorance.
