Instead of Short Rests, there's a Scene system in place. The DM says "this is a scene". A scene can be a single battle, series of short battles, or a RP section of the session. Certain abilities are Once Per Scene. This allows you to use your powerful abilities without worrying about needing to go lay down for an hour afterwards, they'll just be ready because the scene has changed and it's inferred that you can use your good things again, because enough time has passed. It's designed to make things a bit more cinematic. This isn't something new exclusive to PTU. What they call a "scene" is called an "encounter" by 3.5E/4E terminology. The idea of "encounter-based design" was explored in depth in 3.5E in Tome of Battle, and WotC went super-overboard with it in 4E. The 4E encounter definition was arguably a bit too lenient, and the strength of short rest HP recovery disproportionately high, which resulted in some design that was very jarring to players accustomed to 3.5E. The 1-hr short rest in 5E was probably a compromise and a way to dial back to a happy medium between per-encounter and per-day abilities. Oh right, I forgot about that in Tome of Battle. Still, short rests could be houseruled to something similar (for ability cooldowns, at any rate) with very little drawback. It doesn't feel particularly RP fun to say "and then they sat down for an hour to catch their breath". Sure, it doesn't hurt, but it's just book keeping at that point, imo.

Most of the ability recovery from short rests are pretty substantial and would require some conscious effort to sit down and do, RP-wise (e.g. Warlocks' and Wizards' spell recovery). They're not really things that make sense as simple passive recovery between encounters like the ToB per-encounter stuff. On July 16 2015 03:01 Lord Tolkien wrote: Yes. I will almost always design dungeons that are more complex than necessary. Sure there will be some "mandatory" pauses for puzzling (and baddies) but you are free to explore everything as much or as little as you wish. I say this because I want your decisions about what to do to be more character and resource based than "Asmo meta" based. Secondly I'm glad yall are figuring this out, but I just wanna make sure that character antagonism doesn't carry into player antagonism. I know that you guys (wave and soniv) more than anybody are probably not really bothered by your disagreements and if this is the case I encourage disagreements overall, but I'd hate to develop any bad blood at the table. If you feel this happening please let me know or mention it to the player in question. Thanks bbz

I suppose that's true, but historically in my group, that sort of thing ends up being sidelined anyway. Yes, it's practical and RP-y to say that you sit down and read/write in a book for a while to recover your spells (or stretch or whatever to recover your Martial abilities), but you only do it so many times before the DM goes "yeah yeah it's fine we just assume you do it every time". So I guess I'm saying less that you just get the abilities, but more that it's just assumed that you're doing whatever you need to rather than spell it out that you're going to sit still and pore through a book and hold up the party. Heck, I think Gimble should just ride on my shoulders so he can do his work without worrying about walking.

Unfortunately it still wouldn't work cuz the book stays in the room, but it would've been great to try. And also it's a hilarious image.

It's difficult to explain. As things stand now I'm ok to play Tuesday but it's going to be rather last minute if something happens.
