Putin's main points from today's press conference:

  • Russia does not want a war with Crimean people
  • Ousting of Viktor Yanukovich was an unconstitutional coup and he has no political future
  • Western threats of sanctions are counter productive
  • A new government in Ukraine would not be recognised if "terror" continues
  • Russia's actions are within international law
  • Russia does not want to annexe Crimeap

Pretty expected imo.

This is the truly striking aspect of the speech. Russia would not accept the result of the upcoming elections.

P.S. Thank you, Plexa, for the summary!

they wanted to do it, but according to this:

they backed off.
the source is german but it's something i guess.

One the first things that Rada voted on and it passed was removing Russian as one of the official languages of Ukraine. In response to that there were riots and protests in the Eastern Ukraine. PM needed to sign of on the Rada's decision to make it legitimate, once riots started, he refused to sign it. That's what happened as far as I understand.

i think the second point is kind of unexpected, i mean they even allowed him to do a press conference in rostov (russia) where he declares he is the president of the ukraine.
but ye most of the speech is nothing new.

Yanukovich on press-conference was even worse than UA ambassador yesterday in UN.
Even Medveded said that Yanukovich has no authority and his political career is dead over.

They got this law instantly after Yanukovich ran from country.
Still almost everyone speaks Russian.

It wasn't official language, it was regional.
A bit different stuff. But still, without legitimate president they can't do anything.

In his speech Putin stressed many times, on the importance of the upcoming elections. To give East some peace of mind and Ukraine government some legitimacy.

Thats basicly what happend in Ukraine.

They removed yanukovich, but had NO RIGHT to do so. They should have taken the Agreement, with presidential rights removed back to state of 2004, elections in december 2014.

But no, they acted like smartasses.
Voted for themselves, and got to power with no democratic election.
Even if they seem "decent" they are not legit.

Now Putin has a invitation to claim every part of ukraine back, he just has to sent some guys with baseballbats and helmets to the local-governmental buildings, let them claim "we want to be russian" and next thing they see is a line of T90

Awesome job Maidainians and EU-ForeignMinisters !

Neither side gives a crap about the Ukranian people or legitimacy, both Russia and EU & US simply want a Ukranian government pliable to their interests. Closing their eyes when legality is broken in their favor and yelling bloody murder when legality is broken in their opposition's favor, and this has been the situation for long before the current topic. Two hypocrites claiming to be the sole one playing by the rules, its a theatre of the grotesque.

"while terror continues" seems flexible enough for Russia to not consider a newly elected government legitimate if they choose not to.

Yanukovych was impeached by an illegitimate government, a decision made at gunpoint is hardly legitimate.

He was not impeached by a government... Governments don't impeach presidents. Only parliaments do. At least get the things right, OK ?
The ukranian parliament is legitimate, there is no reason to believe otherwise. The parliament impeached Yanukovich and he is no longer president. There are new elections soon and if he wants Yanukovich can run for president again. Putin is talking bullshit.

"The Russian president denied that Putin that the Russian-speaking soldiers occupying key Crimean military sites were Russian troops, describing them as “local self-defence forces”. On the similarity of their uniforms to those of Russian soldiers, he said such uniforms could be purchased anywhere."

From: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/04/ukraine-crisis-shots-fired-crimea-airbase

So if a firefight would errupt between sieged ukrainians and the "nonrussian" troops sieging them. Russia would then use its right to militarily intervene because crimean russians are opressed by nazis?

Thats BS! There were many spontaneous aid gatherings held along Poland. Ukrainians wounded
in clashes and protests are being treated in polish hospitals. We do CARE!
