Before his presidency is over, that hypothetical thread would have more pages and posts than this one.

? Trump is the US president. What he says may be a bit relevant in this thread. Maybe.
Edit: Ok this one is important so for once I'll elaborate. Some people there voted for a clown (maybe that's harsch on clowns, well it is). You should take every opportunity to remind / show to those people that they did vote for a clown. What happened is a big fucked up of democracy the least you could do is to accept this kind of remainder (not that I like democracy but if you like it you have to fight for it, and Trump is not really tre embodiment of democracy).

It is really hard to gauge if some stupid thing he says will or won’t matter. So most of it gets posted by default.
|
yeah i mean he’s the president of the united states. shit he says directly impacts US Politics.
there’s obviously a line somewhere but as with all arbitrary lines, they’re hard to define. you know it when you see it, we’ve seen it, and now we know. well, hopefully. unless he comes back later and says the exact opposite and claims it as fact.
only time will tell.

The spam in here won't change anyone's mind of anyone. It's pretty much circlejerking at how dumb Trump is, good luck trying to have a decent debate when half the thread is occuppied with irrelevant tweets.
@Plansix i doubt that he saying stupid things about how to call China's prime minister/president/king will be relevant anytime soon.

While I agree that all the dumb things aren't particularly interesting; it's also the case that it has a straightforward undeniable relevance.
I also tend to discount anyone using the word "circlejerk"

Trump says dumb shit every day, some of it makes it into this thread and we laugh at it. And sometimes its also important.

And there are millions of Americans who consume every bit of Trump output with approval and adulation, so to approach things as though there's a high path ignores the fact that this nation chose the low.

I wonder if they got spooked by something from the government.

Does no one else feel like their views have actually changed in this thread? I feel like GH has made me more sympathetic to BLM kinds of stuff. I used to be against stuff like clogging up freeways to grab attention, but not anymore. The local conservatives have made me better understand why widespread social change gives them a feeling of being under attack rather than participants in societal shifts. I used to have a lot more cut and dry perspective on societal advancement. I've learned a lot about how people can view a call for change as actually an aggressive move and stuff like that.
I really think I understand lots of people a lot better now.

All of the social media sites seem to be very worried about regulation and investigations. And because they are global, it isn’t just one country that could be coming for them. If they are not proactive, it is easy to imagine a future where they are unable to operate in some countries due to heavy regulations they cannot deal with.

I used to think GH was batshit crazy, a real total looney, but now I understand it as a reaction to people like danglars and xdaunt.
Also, the stuff on how pickup trucks are a masculine status symbol, and buying cars on credit and this credit rating concept was eye-opening.

generally conservatives believe themselves more fierce protectors of individual liberties- unless you’re a woman.
generally i’d agree- unless you’re a woman.

I was pretty well informed beforehand, so it's not a huge shift.

I'm not sure that those on the left don't think they're fierce protectors of individual liberties though. They just take a more utilitarian approach to it.

One way in which it differs from leftism deals in number 3, the likes of which is utterly incoherent for anyone who supports anything conservative here in the States. "National strength" is a laughably hollow proxy for overfunded, contract employee ridden military with enough social services to keep old people happy and voting; the rest of pretty much everything conservative, no matter where on the spectrum, prioritizes enhancing the rights of states at the expense of an effectively strong federal government.

The internet gives us the ability to get a broad overview of any country, but it takes threads like this to get a good understanding of the political tensions and why they exist.
