I can't help but think there's a 30% chance this bill somehow returns. It's like Hayden Panettiere in Heroes.

So at 10 PM, McConnell and the other Republicans announced that in 2 hours (at midnight, about an hour and a half ago) there was going to be a two-part process towards replacing the ACA with a Skinny Repeal. Everyone started scrambling, since basically no time was given. It was livestreamed on CNN and C-SPAN. Part 1: The standard motion to "send back to committee" needs to take place first. In other words, if this motion passes via a vote, then the Republicans don't get to Part 2 at all, and the ACA lives on. If this motion fails, then the Republicans get to have their key vote to attempt to pass the Skinny Repeal. Verdict: The motion to stop the process failed to pass, with 48 Yes's to 52 No's. That's bad for Americans and for the ACA and Democrats. This allows the second part to occur... Part 2: The motion to pass the Skinny Repeal. I'm not sure why any Republicans would vote No both times (as the second No would basically contradict their first round No), but for some reason, Republicans McCain, Collins, and Murkowski are a NO with this final vote. McCain happened to be the clutch here. Verdict: This motion was defeated with 49 Yes's and 51 No's! Obamacare stays alive for now, thanks to Democrats, Independents, and 3 Republicans. And fuck you and your salty bitching and moaning and trying to screw millions of Americans out of healthcare, Mitch McConnell.

Yea, and the people waited, breath baited, to see what poetic verbiage would flow forth from his tiny hands and phone when, like Caeser, he was most foully betrayed by his trusted compatriots despite his best efforts at showing them what for with insults and opaque coercion.

edit: I think Schumer's words were much more classy and reasonable.

In other news: https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/07/as-dominance-of-launch-market-looms-spacex-now-valued-at-21-billion/?comments=1 SpaceX is now valued at 21 billion, and their market share of commercial launches has pretty much crowded out any American competition in the next year. I don't expect to see this trend reversing any time soon. The next milestone for them is Falcon Heavy in November, and depending on if they can pull that off, they'll have the rest of the market cornered on pricing. ![]()

I have to say I'm impressed at/thankful for just how ineffectual Republicans have proven to be to date. They found a way to avoid the 60 vote hurdle giving them, for all practical purposes, a larger margin of error than Democrats had for the ACA and failed spectacularly. Some responsible country should probably replace our government with one capable and competent to do what it is they get elected to do and say they are doing.
