Access to medical marijuana may be cutting down on the overall use of opioids, including prescription painkillers like OxyContin and Percocet, new research suggests.
In a study, researchers from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health analyzed traffic fatality data from 1999-2013 for 18 U.S states. They found that most states that passed medical marijuana laws saw an overall reduction in fatal crashes involving drivers who tested positive for opioids.
“We would expect the adverse consequences of opioid use to decrease over time in states where medical marijuana use is legal, as individuals substitute marijuana for opioids in the treatment of severe or chronic pain,” lead author June H. Kim, a doctoral student at Mailman, said in a statement.
The study, published Thursday in the American Journal of Public Health, is among the first to look at the link between state medical marijuana laws and opioid use. Medical marijuana laws, the authors concluded, are “associated with reductions in opioid positivity among 21- to 40-year-old fatally injured drivers and may reduce opioid use and overdose.”
The United States is currently facing an epidemic of opioid painkiller abuse. Since 1999, opioid prescriptions and sales have quadrupled in the United States, a boom that the CDC said has “helped create and fuel” the current opioid abuse crisis. In 2014 alone, more than 14,000 people ― nearly 40 per day ― died from overdoses of prescribed opiates.
The Columbia study adds to a growing body of evidence showing cannabis can be an effective, alternative treatment for pain relief.
A 2014 study, for example, found that states with medical marijuana had fewer prescription painkiller overdose deaths than those without. And in July, researchers documented that states with medical marijuana saw a drop in prescription drugs, saving an estimated $165.2 million in Medicare costs.
In March, federal health officials issued new guidelines for opioid prescriptions in an effort to curb the crisis, urging doctors to largely avoid prescribing highly addictive painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin when treating patients for chronic pain.

I'm still confused over the single-minded focus on Trump's electoral deficits with minorities when Hillary is getting absolutely crushed by the white and male votes. If she loses, it will be because of those groups. That's worthy of at least as much discussion as Trump's support problems with minority voters.

The battle is over college educated voters, the GOP has given up on minority outreach.

Reading past headlines is for shlubs.

I don't really know why he would retweet that even if he has only read the headline

I dont think he wins white males hard enough to counter how bad he does with minorities and white women.

Still people should be aware of things like that: http://www.odditycentral.com/technology/this-usb-stick-can-kill-your-computer-almost-instantly.html No one remotely said that Apple couldn't access that data. And, more importantly, most people thought that the FBI could get that data just as easily if they wanted to.
The entire issue was that Apple was being compelled by court to break and hack their own systems for the FBI's convenience. And not for the purpose of getting the data from one phone, but for providing easier access for all of the FBI's future dragnet trawling.

In terms of state, he's not super even though... I don't think he can win without Pennsylvania or Michigan (Michigan seems closer actually) and she still has a decent lead there. If we give him every state that's close, I don't think that's enough yet (unless I'm missing something?)

If I remember correctly he only polls favourably among non-college educate white men, while Romney won the white male college demographic by 25% or something.
He's also trailing 30% on white college educated women, while Romney won the demographic by 6%. I don't think there's actually that many white guys without college education. The only way to him for win is for everybody else to not show up.
I honestly refuse to believe that you can win an election in the US without women, hispanics, african americans, asians and college grads.

Source This should the the first and loudest argument for legalization. Its the argument that swayed me for legal or at least medical weed. Simple comparison between THC and weed vs opioids and heroin. not an argument after that.

However I wouldn't say all the whites voting him for are racist. Tho a noticeable percentage probably is.

When you are only winning witb half of one demo (white males because he is losing white women) do you really think he will win? If he had white women in large numbers it would be a different story or like 90% of WM. But he doesn't. As was said before he only wins os if this shit show of an election jades enough people to stay home or vote green/libertarian.

Can the Democrats ever again win back white working class voters that used to be a staple in their ranks? All the party talks about is race and minorities and LGBT and immigrants. And back in the day of Obama running, most of them could imagine when he talked about the haters and racists and divisive voices, he was talking about that other group. Now the message is different: the racists they're talking about are you. And that's a tough message to undo.

If the only way to do that is to insult everybody else, probably not.

In 8 years most of those people will be dead or less likelyto vote due to being pretty old. Younger whites have no problem except they will push dems to be further left. There isnt going to be many that they will have to win over.
