Stuff like this is only fuel for the bonding rituals of people who are already committed to voting blue to come together, point and go "lol Republicans again!" The US could always raise the voting age. Is Trump winning the young student vote? Don't think he is but I could be wrong

I'm pretty sure that when people called her out on that she didn't double down by saying that it happened the way she originally claimed and that the Republicans were out to get her. She apologized and explained how her error occurred. Like how are you not getting why this is funny? It's not because of the original fuckup, it's because you have a campaign that absolutely refuses to admit wrongdoing under any circumstances which is forcing otherwise intelligent people to start making arguments like "well we did a google search for the words "word is my bond" and found it's a common saying so I'm not sure how you can say it's plagiarism" while ignoring that the entire paragraph was lifted intact. That's what makes this scandal funny. It's a minor thing which should be easily dismissed but because Trump is incapable of ever letting anything go, from this to "no, I actually wear a glove size slightly above average and many people on meeting me comment on how large my hands are", it gets escalated until it dominates the news cycle.

Notice the part where she doesn't keep insisting she landed under sniper fire.

I would say your interpretation of her 'apologizing' is pretty generous. She blatantly lied about it then tried to pin it on sleep deprivation like it wasn't her fault. Her 'apologizing' was refusing to accept blame for the situation and pinning it on external factors beside herself accepting personal responsibility for the fact that she just chose to lie. She no more is willing to come out and say "I'm sorry I lied to the American people to try to make myself look better" than the Melania fiasco right now is willing to accept responsibility. I don't really see the point in arguing whether or not it should be funny or not; I think humor is fairly subjective. But for the record I actually do find it very funny watching all these staffers squirm around in interviews trying to cover up for the fuckup.

It was proved otherwise. Then she said that she was wrong and that she misremembered. Then she blamed that on lack of sleep. Melania claimed that she wrote those words. It was proved otherwise. Then the Trump team doubled down on the original claim.

And the most weird think about Trump, the fact that he seems to give no fucks at all. He lies, people show evidence that he lies, and instead of apologizing, changing the topic, giving some explanation, or any other sensible reaction to that situation, he just keeps on repeating the original lie without even acknowledging that there ever was any evidence that it is complete nonsense. I find this behaviour to be very weird. I have no explanation as to why it seems to be working. It does not sound like a reasonable strategy.

I find this behaviour to be very weird. I have no explanation as to why it seems to be working. It does not sound like a reasonable strategy. It's simple. Many of the people that support him believe he cannot be wrong because him being wrong now would mean he was probably wrong in the past and make their choice worse. Therefore, they believe him, no matter what evidence is presented to the contrary and they will instinctively search for reasons to discredit any evidence that does seem to contradict him. It's hardly something unique to Trump-it's human nature, and very much a factor when it comes to stories about Clinton or Sanders-he's just taken advantage of it more than most other politicians and realized it does not actually help him to admit he was wrong in any way.
