Some people may hate Cruz, but a lot of people legitimately believe democrats have evil intentions. From what I gather a lot of people legitimately believe republicans have evil intentions as well.
I think people frame republicans as excessively greedy and non-compassionate, relying on might makes right and stuff like that to justify suffering because it's "human nature" and stuff like that. But there is a distinction between that and "they literally kill babies, god's creations". Democrats are framed as some kinda supporters of baby genocide in a way that just doesn't have a republican counterpart.
There's a difference between "missing the part of your brain that is responsible for compassion" and "straight up wanting babies to die". Those two views trigger a different sense of urgency.

Convincing your base the other side is going to change their lives and destroy their culture is a super effective way to run for office. Terrible for governing, but great for getting elected. Our elected officials are supposed to discourage that tenancy in party politics, not encourage it. In theory.
Personally I don't think that many democrats feel a lot of reason to champion bipartisanship in the years of our lord 2018. Most of them I know feel real burned by the Republican party using things like TARP to attack democrats during the election. We saw it in the push for DACA. The instant the democrats tried to force the GOPs hand, the Dreamers became Illegal Immigrants.

The European Union is preparing punitive tariffs on iconic U.S. brands produced in key Republican constituencies, raising political pressure on President Donald Trump to ditch his plan for taxing steel imports.
Targeting 2.8 billion euros ($3.5 billion) of American goods, the EU aims to apply a 25 percent tit-for-tat levy on a range of consumer, agricultural and steel products imported from the U.S. if Trump follows through on his tariff threat, according to a list drawn up by the European Commission and obtained by Bloomberg News. The list of targeted U.S. goods -- including motorcycles, jeans and bourbon whiskey -- sends a political message to Washington about the potential domestic economic costs of making good on the president’s threat.
Paul Ryan, Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, comes from the same state -- Wisconsin -- where motorbike maker Harley-Davidson Inc. is based. Earlier this week, Ryan said he was “extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war” and urged Trump to drop his tariff proposal.
Other U.S. politicians will also feel the pressure. Bourbon whiskey hails from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s home state of Kentucky. San Francisco-based jeans maker Levi Strauss is headquartered in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s district.
The EU has expressed growing concerns about Trump’s protectionist stance on trade and steel has political importance to the bloc, which was born out of the European Coal and Steel Community in the 1950s. The industry also continues to have economic clout, generating annual sales of around 170 billion euros, accounting for more than 1 percent of EU gross domestic product and directly providing over 300,000 jobs.
The European retaliatory list targets imports from the U.S. of shirts, jeans, cosmetics, other consumer goods, motorbikes and pleasure boats worth around 1 billion euros; orange juice, bourbon whiskey, corn and other agricultural products totaling 951 million euros; and steel and other industrial products valued at 854 million euros. The Brussels-based commission, the EU’s executive arm, discussed the retaliatory measures with representatives of the bloc’s governments at a meeting on Monday evening.
Europe may expand the group of targeted American goods should Trump also follow through on a related pledge to impose a 10 percent duty on foreign aluminum. The list obtained by Bloomberg on Tuesday relates only to steel countermeasures.

It's damn near impossible to find a t-shirt made in the US here, how many could possibly be making it to Europe. I feel like a lot of that stuff is just cutting down on it being shipped to the US and branded first.
I think there's a lot of bluster going on about Trump's proposal on tariffs, but I don't think there's a whole lot to it any time soon.

My favorite thing about Trump's presidency is that it is completely disproving all the 20 year old edge lords who are like "WTF GOVERNMENT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, THIS IS CLEARLY WHAT WOULD WORK BEST!"
None of these ideas are new. We've done them before. And then it was shitty and we learned from it, so we don't do it anymore. It's like using benzene as a tabletop cleaner. We used to do that because it seemed like it would work great. But there are really big reasons why you should not do that. So we stopped. Benzene is great at cleaning, but the whole cancer thing later in life ends up being a total buzzkill.
The more I think of it, benzene as a household cleaner is actually a fantastic analogy for the Trump presidency.

I'm not talking about reductionism. I am talking about the arrogance born from ignorance regarding thoughts like "Ya know, if the government was SMART...like ME...they would see the CLEAR SOLUTION TO THE ECONOMY is to do ____"
Cletus thinks he's totally got this whole "run a country" thing figured out. We are giving it a shot (again) after already learning from our mistakes before. I'm saying this with respect to "trade war" types of stuff. To me, it feels like some undergrad getting snarky and being like "lol I'm a fucking genius. What if we used benzene to clean stuff at home? It is a pretty great solvent".

It is a US tariff, not a Republican or Democratic tariff. The retaliatory tariffs have to be equivalent to the value of EU exports affected by US tariffs. And the preferred method is to reach that figure from a bunch of smaller categories of imports rather than going in on a single category equal in value. That's how you end up with products on that list that the EU buys less than 100M worth of from the US.

Are you sure there isn’t some “pot calling the kettle black” action going on in accusing people of reductionist political opinions? Although you did just remind me of the time I took a good strong whiff of cyclohexane in a lab. Ugh. I'm not talking about reductionism. I am talking about the arrogance born from ignorance regarding thoughts like "Ya know, if the government was SMART...like ME...they would see the CLEAR SOLUTION TO THE ECONOMY is to do ____" Cletus thinks he's totally got this whole "run a country" thing figured out. I think you have some examples in this thread of how delusional most people who voted for Trump are ready to get not to admit that they indeed put a complete clown at the white house, and that his government is one of the most spectacular clusterfuck of incompetence, corruption and utter stupidity in contemporary history
When all the damage is done, they probably find a way to blame the deep state and the establishment for the cancer the benzene created.
In any case, remember: Trump voters didn’t fuck up and did nothing wrong. He could well blow up the fucking planet, Danglar and xDaunt would still be certain that at no point they might have screwed up. Don’t expect anyone to learn anything from that shitshow. They’ll keep promoting benzene.

edit: It should be noted that Trump's immigration policies and wall are unpopular in Texas and most of the boarder states. They are far more in touch with the realities of the board and our Mexican neighbors than most Republicans from northern states.
Cease this rational discussion and focus on the comedic value of me eating a sock.

Source I don't get going after Dems with the EU tariffs. It is not like Natty P is supporting trump in doing this They don’t care about political parties, they just want the tariffs to not be put in place. It is a US tariff, not a Republican or Democratic tariff. But if they're targeting specific politicians they're already saying that they're trying to put political pressure on the politicians themselves and not the country as a whole. You can't have your cake of retaliating against tariffs and then eat that you're not going after politicians at the same time. The leadership in both houses. They are attacking the party leadership, who hold positions of power in congress. Who are again politicians that they are targeting specifically with damaging their local economies in order to influence their actions. Its effective and its morally better then widespread tariffs but its still targeting democrats and republicans.
It completely makes sense to push the buttons that will have the most effect. They can't fight the tariffs, but they can fight the people who have power over the tariffs.

You may be thinking of the Dept. of Ed. rescission of guidance that forced the SC to remand the Gavin Grimm case back to the Fourth without a decision. In today's Sixth case, the transgender individual intervened in the lawsuit on the basis that the EEOC may no longer represent her interests and she succeeded both there and with the substantive decision today. I'm not otherwise aware of where else the racist Keebler elf is doing damage.
