You/we have to realize, that a 2,5m deep hole doesn't mean 2,5m of sand - because if it collapses, the surrounding sand can't completely "fill" the 2,5 deep hole...if you know what I'm talking about here. For completely filling the hole, you would have to put most of the sand you've dug out back in again. Even though this is pure speculation: I can only imagine they broke/twisted their legs/ankles from the fall and were somewhat "lying" inside the hole, unable to move, let alone get up, when the walls of the hole collapsed.

People do this sort of thing all the time, these ones just got unlucky. It's like, the wife willingly fell into the hole as well since she helped dig it, what was going through her head?

So I would then imagine, when after falling, with sides of the hole unstable, (since it is sand we're talking about), they had more than a ton of sand bury them, which then caused the suffocation. This death by sand pit isn't as uncommon as you might think: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/06/20/health/main2959899.shtml

I'm think the most the article's going to say is this part (probably since formal cause of death is still pending): "The couple's upper bodies were covered by sand, police said." I think we can assume they either fell headfirst (the pit was big enough to flip around in) and got stuck (beach sand isn't exactly stable for digging yourself out of) or that the walls caved in on them. When we think of this sand pit we aren't thinking of a box or bucket, it's not really a solid/immovable object, the sides shift and you can fall through the 'bottom' of it as well.
