Does anyone know who the top Chinese players are competing for this? Do the Taiwanese players compete in this as well or do they hold a separate qualifier

There are 32 Chinese mainland players fighting for the TOP 8, then the top 8 will play live in Shanghai for BlizzCon 2011 tickets.
There is a separate qualifier for Taiwan;)

Well this really sucks. I can't make my "Slasher" pick now for this event and say xiaOt will qualify. Need to figure out another obvious prediction to make for this instead. Hmmmm.....

No doubt XiaoT is talented. But I don't expect much from him now. Check out his story of e-sports career. He's been a pro in many games but never been stable. Now rumor says he's transiting to a team manager.

I don't know the chinese scene that well, but I wouldn't be suprised if they are better then most ''foreigners'' and more close to the koreans, they too have rigid practice schedules and team houses right?

Expecting good games!.

Can you explain how
Ro32, BO3 Double Elimination
Ro16, divided into 4 Groups
works exactly?

Where do the losers of the Ro32 feed back in exactly?

No, because there will be 16 players for Blizzcon.

It should be 2 from each region but I haven't heard anything for a RU qualifier and the EURO qualifier this time had white-ra in it. So they may have excluded spots for RU and perhaps invite the previous blizzcon champion and runner-up. I read one article that Genius was expected back but that wasn't a source from blizz itself.

Blizz really doesn't release enough information about its tournament structure. :/

Some of the format details may have been "lost in translation", I'll look into this, I just copy/pasted the email I got. Sorry for any confusion!

Yea =D I think a big part of what was missing in BW was in depth coverage and reporting of the Chinese scene. You only ever heard about a few major tournaments and I feel like a lot got lost in translation.

If we can help bring the chinese scene closer to us, it might help bring the chinese players closer to foreign players and get them more involved, etc~~

The one very interesting thing is this separation has caused some really cool stuff from China. Their players do things you don't see on other servers or in different ways.

I was watching a Lovecd replay today (he was playing MKP) and I noticed his vision he had created with pylon placement throughout the game.

The scary part is he started this pylon layout over 10 in game minutes before that screenshot. If I am correct (this is just a suspicion) I think he had every pylon throughout the entire game mapped out 0_O!

Nop, sometimes during peak hours it starts lagging hard, but this has only happened twice thus far. And FARRRRRRR less latency then Korea.

Because right now I don't think they seem to care about tournaments outside of China (besides Blizzcon) really it seems. StarsWar was a Chinese tournament.

I'm working with getting all the Chinese teams into the iCCup Korean Weekly, and we have World Elite (WE) already committed. Hopefully that's just the start of getting the Chinese more out and about with non Chinese tournaments !

all bo3 and shitty blizzard maps with close positions make me cringe

The Chinese community has been saying that protoss is for sure, without a doubt, the strongest race in star2. Let's see what comes out of these qualifiers to show why. SO excited to watch now. Thanks for the coverage diamond

I hope in a few years there will be this huge offline LAN tournament held called the ICCup LAN or something and it takes place only once a year and is held in a different country/continent each year kind of like the World Cup.
We got them GOM TvT's and them mlGG's

Ok so I got the schedule and all is well but I don't know which CST the organizer is referring to but I'm pretty sure it's Chinese Standard Time (UTC +8). So here is the schedule, but it's not 100% until I get the confirm on the time zone.

Aug 9 starting around 23:00CST. This day will be done off replays
Aug 10 starting at 19:00 CST.
Aug 11 starting at 19:00CST.

Aug 12, Ro 16 Group A, starting at 19:00CST
Aug 13, Ro 16 Group B, starting at 19:00CST
Aug 14, Ro 16 Group C, starting at 19:00CST
Aug 15, Ro 16 Group D, starting at 19:00CST

Sad to browse the player list and not see xiaOt in there - he really was a dominating force. I haven't seen much of the Chinese scene since Stars Wars so i can only base it on that. Assuming the Protosses will be as strong as ever - Lovecd and TT should go far

CEO huh? Guess that's more time consuming than being a coach. It's a shame, because XiaoT was easily a top 3 player in China.

Hm... so many teams in China, I wish they were more involved with the other non-Korean scenes.
Well, if there is too much lag with "China -> NA" or "China -> EU" they could invite at least NA teams to their server, Diamond mentioned that "NA -> China" is close to perfect, which is why he (from NA) practises mainly on the Chinese servers.

I thought 'lei che' was short for 'di lei che' which meant 'landmine car' aka Vulture in Chinese.

Shame LX is no longer playing... His micro was magnificent (For a foreigner).

XiaoT oh man he was a beast in War3 but I'm surprised that he is still around, when I quit the war3 scene, everyone in China was saying that he was playing WoW and Dota rofl.

Are these 'better' Chinese players as good as the Koreans in the GSL? Or close to their level? It is weird how rarely they're able to engage with the global SCII scene, despite being adjacent to Korea and across a strait from Taiwan.

Infi: wc3 player, quite skilled at sc2 aswell.
Jim: a 15 year old that would've played at IEM if he was a year older.

So, who's the powerhouses i need to keep an eye today?

F91: BW veteran in top form
XiGua: Considered just about the best zerg in China.
Infi: wc3 player, quite skilled at sc2 aswell.
Jim: a 15 year old that would've played at IEM if he was a year older.

Thanks, I remember F91, and I know that Xigua is good, I hope they play their best today

Xigua will play live tomorrow

Wow, there are actually a lot of really strong chinese players. I wish a team from the West would partner up and send these guys to some more tourneys. Its a real shame they are so isolated from the bigger scene

Any way we can get "$18,000" put in the thread title as the first word to change it to "18,000 Blizzcon 2011 Chinese Qualifiers"

Thanks!

I think mass speedlings are mostly a counter to blink stalkers. I've seen a lot of KR zergs defending blink stalkers the same way. I can't imagine it working vs zealot/archon or stargate play or dt tho. I think Nostalie just did it as a reaction to LoveTT's play

All lings to 3 bases and a stupid amount of drones, Lair at an absurdly late time and focuses on mobility and counters.

He got his 3rd hatch at like 4:30.
vs 1 stargate, it could be held off.
Not sure vs 2 stargate.
I think he should've transitioned into infestor ling would've been stronger imo.
But that was still a sick style

Something stuck my mind when seeing LoveTT with so many DT. What if you got so many, they can take spores and such out easily, but having a few blink stalkers also running around sniping overseers that are newly created, or perhaps warp prism with archons/stalker/ht for feedback dmg?

Interesting idea I think but would probably require gosu micro!

I've also thought about this. I think that just like corsair/dt was really strong in BW, in SC2 I think that Blink stalkers/dts would be really strong. Same techtree and stalkers are so good at sniping spores and overseers.

People have done that during the beta( I think) or it was a bit after the release. Basically it can be a strong build but lots of micro is needed, another problem are the infestors, they own stalkers quite nicely. I think that was the reason the build never got popular, it was called "ninja build" btw.

I'd still like to see some Bisu-like build with lots of harass! (Hi Sage)

Would like too do this, but i can't find the brackets, and the format is quite confusing (Ro16 group stage, Ro32 double elimination?)

So day 2 starts tomorrow at 14.00 in europe time?

The question would be why you choose the Chinese word for 'Watermelon' as your name :D

About the series right now - 2 lame Ling/Roach all-ins in a row from VA.Ezrc vs iG.MacSed. He held the first on Metalopolis and now seems to hold the one on Xel'Naga as well quite easily. Yeah, Ezrc GGs. Too bad as this doesn't shows either player's skills.

Haha at the end 17 Drones for Zerg vs 44 Probes, pretty crazy all in on 17 Drones :/

honestly and truly disappointed with the level of skill displayed thus far and no, I don't think it's a different meta game. There are just some sloppy decisions being displayed every time I tune in to this point. Maybe the top 4 will be different.

These 2 that are playing right now is nowhere near top level in China. I think top Chinese are equal with EU/NA pros but still quite far behind Koreans though.

Just in general right? If it's orb casting, he does that because he's semi-colorblind afaik.
F91 seemed pretty good ;p, although his protoss opponent was quite terrible.

A bit unfortunate that liquipedia is so up to date that todays and tomorrows matches are already updated. Perhaps a "spoiler" in the OP might be good.
Just clicked at the link to watch who is playing and saw who´s going to advance

Beside that, good work/cast as always. Good luck with the new name/situation. Hasn´t changed much as I could read in your SC2 General post, and problems with Blizzard are now solved.

It's the caster. Orb uses a mod that makes the player colors more distinguishable.

Is that legal? I'm not sure if Blizzard would want somebody showingcasing their own tournament with a modded client.

Technically not legal. But blizzard clearly doesn't have a problem with it.

Did you see that?

F91 was planning a Zergling counter-attack. He sent 1 zergling to trigger the defending siege tank's fire, then sent the rest of his zerglings so they can gain more ground while the tank is reloading.

I wish more we see more of that kind of micro

Looked to me like he was testing if there was a hole between the bunker and the supply depot. Zergling just never made it that far.

Remember, aside for a few players, most of China has only had access to SC2 for a month and a half or so.

China is very particular about what is in the games that are released in their country. I am not too surprised about it.

But as previously noted its a MOD, so ignore what I say haha.

The chinese have the same work ethic and dedication that the koreans do.

It's only a matter of time til we see a lot more refined play from them.

Currently it looks similar to what SC2 did ~9 months ago... a lot of 1 base all-inny plays.

Should evolve in no time though.

Depends on the level of interest in SC 2 there. If there's no interest, there won't be many great players.

As someone who is moving to China very shortly, this is extremely relevant to my interests. A good chance to get in on the ground floor of SCII in China?

Pro-gamer incoming!

EDIT: The other important thing to note is that it's not quite as easy for people in China to stream events from all around the world as it is in many other countries, so they probably haven't been able to see the most current strategies.

Is it because of some of the campaign undertones that they didn't have access to it for so long?

I actually kind of like the mod, tbh. Also, the caster, orb, is colour-blind, so he has great difficulty seeing the colours (especially in mirror match-ups) without the mod.

Yea one thing I have learned from this tournament is the skill difference between the top 10 Chinese players and all the rest is quite quite large. Cause if you watch Lovett, Lovecd, Loner, etc you will see some top level play.

Not particularly impressed with even the big names. Seem like only a couple of them would make a dent in GSL for instance. Kind of bad decisionmaking, not expanding when they are in a situation to do so, running armies into storms, stimmed marines or whatever.

Chinese Protoss are good though somewhat "behind the curve" so to speak with regards to builds, Chinese Zergs are mediocre (XiGua doesn't impress me at all, tbh), and Chinese Terrans are very weak, IMHO. Ahhh, how I wish xiaOt were still playing.

I do have faith in the Chinese scene, though. They'll break out sooner or later, just like they did in WC3.

That's because SaSe said he when he went over to China.

I think the biggest thing is that there are a small group of chinese players (xiaot, lovecd, xigua etc.) that are at a much much higher level than everyone else.

You've gotta remember most of them haven't been playing SC2 for more than a few months.

And many of the players in this tournament were very active in the WC3 scene relatively recently.

Not all of them. Looking at the list, I'd say maybe Loner, Lovecd, LoveTT, F91, XiGua, and a few others. Don't think Lovecd has any serious RTS background, actually, though his brother (Sky) is a WC3 beast.

If skill is dropping, that's usually not a good sign for a pro-scene, or a scene in general. Perhaps this is a signal for the demise of SC 2 in China? The game can't be seeing a lot of play, given that the Chinese server has all of 270,000 players, which is abysmal relative to the numbers you'd expect to see from China, and it doesn't seem to be growing anymore.

I think the issue is we got a bit spoiled with StarsWar and saw the best of the best. Like i said before the problem seems to be the Top 10 players are awesome, but the skill dropoff is very large after that.

The Stars Wars tournament had a Chinese qualifier and then we only saw the best of the best. This is still early-ish on in the tournament. They definitely have the ability to perform, i just hope the motivation and money is in it for them

The StarsWar tournament only had six Chinese players, all of whom had to play through some pretty long, grueling qualifiers to get there. They were the "cream of the crop," so to speak, and among those six, I would say that only three of them (xiaOt, Lovecd, LoveTT -- aka, the Protoss players) were any good - and by "good", I mean potentially GSL-quality players. xiaOt impressed me the most; he was easily Code A level at the time -- maybe even low- to mid-Code S level. I am still depressed at the thought of his retirement. Meanwhile, LoveTT and Lovecd both didn't impress me that much, but I think if they can clean up their play a bit, they could make Code A.

XiGua has been getting a lot of hype lately. I don't think he's better than Moon though, to be honest. He's definitely not as impressive as Sen, IMHO.

Any notable players? Players you think will win the whole thing? I don't think many of us know the Chinese scene too well.

LoveCD is pretty good and consistant. Top 2 China Protoss probably.
He is sky's little brother (top HU war3 player, used to be number 1 during 2005-2008).

Xigua just won the WCG China so he is pretty sick as well.

Obviously, Uhen who just bet Xigua and LoveTT (1st or 2nd best Protoss from China) must be a top player as well.

And to finish Loner, ex semi-pro War3 player, playing since early Beta, used to be quite good and even competed in the Blizzcon/GSL where he did decent, though he always semt to lack that little something which makes an excellent player, a dominant one.
But as he won his group 3-0, things might have changed.

About the others, I'm not sure, but Starcraft 2 is still a very young game so there's definitely some chances that they might be excellent and even better than these 4.

__________

Xigua to me is the favorite, because he has been dominant lately winning both G-league (2 months ago) and WCG China 2011, 2 latest Chinese tournaments, plus Zerg current state is excellent.

Well you beat me to it lol! Just something to add that Lovecd in the StarsWar tournament beat (in order) to get 2nd place: IM.NesTea, Liquid`TLO, mTw.Dimaga and WE.GIGA.Lovett!!!

Well in a most frustrating moment we JUST got informed we will need to PAY $30,000-$40,000 to cover this event or we can't cover it, despite talking to Blizz all day, they just informed us.

Very disappointed and I hope this works out before the cast starts, I have reached out to Blizz NA.

That is so bullshit. If Blizzard cant get a stream for their own tournament they should just greet outsiders who want to spread it with open arms. Once again Blizzards e-sports department makes a silly move.

You even switched name for it to work out...

There's apparently a Blizz stream they decided to put together last minute. So I don't know I THOUGHT we were, and I even talked to Blizz NA all day and they had no issues with it. This is the weirdest thing I've ran into yet.....

After a quick trip to the Blizzard website, an attempt to find the "English Stream" led to a chinese website, which I couldn't read obviously, other than this message:
"Sorry, PPLive web plug-in (98KB) does not support Firefox, Opera and other browsers, please use IE to watch, thank you ^ _ ^".
Which completely eliminates me and and anyone who doesn't use windows or ie from the audience.

ESV TV apparently can't cast because he got an email saying they needed to pay $30-$40K to cover the event.

this is some crazy news. Blizzard needs to get there organizers in check. I highly doubt this is being done with Blizzards knowledge. If it is....shame on them. That is an absurd amount of money to cast a Blizz event.
