GL + Show Spoiler + garbageface lol This was how most militaries worked for a long time, pretty much until the Marian reforms soldiers were expected to pay for their own equipment and what they could afford would give them their role(those incapable of affording even the basic breastplate would be unarmoured skirmishers) After the Roman Empire collapsed most society still expected warriors to pay for their own equipment, nobility of course being rich could afford horses and armour and Kings would expect their fiefs to supply their own soldiers or pay for mercenaries when requested. It wasn't until more modern militaries began to surface that this was abandoned or lessened, but even then having money guaranteed you a spot as an officer until recently(and arguably still does via education) | ||
