SOLAR BLAST: A magnetic filament on the sun erupted yesterday, May 24th, and the blast hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) in the general direction of Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the action around the blast site in 10xHDTV resolution:

Shortly after the eruption, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spotted a billion-ton CME racing away from the sun: movie. NOAA forecasters say there is a 35% chance of geomagnetic activity on May 27th when the cloud delivers a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

What kind of effects does an event like this have on the earth? What (if anything) should we worry about?

Interesting stuff.

I can't help but feel that if this was as big as the OP makes it out to be it would be all over the news. Dunno could be wrong about this. Hopefully nothing bad happens.

there was one on may 9th, its not exactly an unusual thing to happen. American Media might call for end of the world, so fox news might ask you to vote republican in the new earthen republic after the initial fallout.

no, we wouldn't die, all our technology would. I mean, this may not even be that big of a deal, but in 1859 a solar flare took out all the telegraph poles. Imagine if this one takes out all the satellites and power transformers.

lets get ready to live 100 years in the past (besides running generators at least)
