Day 2 + Show Spoiler [The PGL Format] +PGL has an unusual, but innovative, format. The 16 players are in 4 randomized groups, and to eliminate the possibility of a "group of death" eliminating a good player early, the groups will play each other in a clanwars-style match before the intra-group matches. For example, if group A defeats group B, and then defeats the winner of group C vs group D, two of its players will go to the Ro8 and two of its players will go to "extra matches" and still have a chance to make it to the Ro8. Which two would advance to the Ro8? That would of course be decided in intra-group matches. However, if group A loses twice instead of winning, two of its players will go to "extra matches" and two will be eliminated from the PGL. For a complete overview of the format, please go to this threadIn the battle between the groups, each group will send out a player. After this first match, the winner plays another member of the opposing team, and, if he keeps winning, another and another until all players on the opposing team have been eliminated. Not sure about Strelok, but from Vulture's FPV, he expanded very fast and just added gateways like mad. Macroed up a huge number of units very fast while pretty much not getting harassed at all. It seems that Strelok just didn't have the production to match when the attack came.

Man, vulture is playing so much better than last season. Also, I am finally looking forward to seeing LX and PJ play. 10 days is such a long time its really a marathon not a sprint, but every day is important and definitly fun to watch as a fan.

Well Vulture got off a few good storm drops, but PJ got his expos way earlier, and Vulture practically let his army get perfectly stormed several times. Then PJ rolled through Vulture, took 6, and built like 20 cannons there.

PJ had better unit control - his Archons did a lot more than Vulture's, and his Dragoons got off more shots.
It was over the moment Vulture lost the 6-expansion.

I think T1 gave him his progamer license, but he never had any success in the offline prelims. I could be wrong though.

PJ 2-1'd Savior in WCG while Savior was in his 12 winstreak vs Protoss . PJ best Chinese ever, there was a thread about most of the Chinese tourneys this year and Pj won almost all of them. So I guess he is pretty damn skilled.

Both players fp vod options, and a quality stream is alot better then what WCG managed to put up. Only thing missing is basically english commenting. Even if you are clueless at least don't write dumb things that are wrong on so many level, like a very big coinflip. A coinflip is 50/50 no matter the size, and I am fairly sure if Nony knew it was a 'coinflip' he would take it willingly, I don't expect him to have an edge long term over Orion - yet. Also, as pointed out, the longer the games, the more likely the player with more experience and better mechanincs will take it, and that still is the progamer..

That's probably one of the worst builds to do on Dest., and as opposed to Mass Sair/Drop which is what he should've done considering it's way too easy to be contained. Just sair/reav w/ reav @ exp's choke and GG Eva, but he didn't do that and got rollledd.

By one of the best, I don't mean top 3.. I mean he's probably top 50, amongst the koreans, and that's saying a lot.
Hell he's probably top 30 maybe top 20.
He has a lot of speed and great unit control, just need to work on his planning and preparation and pick out better strats for his maps, and he'd own.
His prob. against super was that his first recall did sh * t and he let T harass too much. Other than that, his macro / micro is amongst pro-gamer tier.

If you pause your stream, it doesn't keep buffering through like korean streams. no... terran can make a wall to block lings out on every position.. if his (2nd depo the one in the mid was 1 space to the right.. lings wouldnt have been able to run in and snipe the marine/scv's

In his pre-PGL interview, Nony claimed he'd be disappointed in himself if he didn't make top 4. It's going to be a tough run but I really hope he can make that. He's not been in Korea for very long at all yet, so everyone who is 'disappointed' in his play should realize that just because he's been in Korea for a month doesn't mean he's going to instantly be twice as good.

The Terran made a couple mistakes
- Didn't make a ling-tight wall; which Lz explained was possible.
- Started his bunker in a bad position; it should have been on high ground
None of that has to do with map hacking lol.

What's really the point in watching the observer's stream? Observers are n00bz, they click around the map too slow, and they don't show everything.
IMO FP feed is the best, for the person you're rooting for obv.

doesnt matter... with a CORRECT WALL lings cant get in, bunkers build fast he cant target the bunker thats building (no high ground sight) so u just lose scv's slowly to a sunken since the marines would be shooting the lings while the marines wait for bunk to finish but it doesnt matter if terran loses 5 scv's considering zerg wasted 175 minarals on a sunk and has so few drones @ home

I reckon he made it like that to allow for more SCVs/rines to come out and stop a sunk going up since the drone got there too early for the neutral sunk to go down, but it was a really bad call IMO.

Its a BIG coinflip because there are two completely polar outcomes to proxying, so yes 50/50 is still 50/50 but its not 50/50 eco damage or not, proxy gates are 100% all in.

If you're being 5/6-pooled , wouldn't you have roughly 12-13 scvs max by the time you're rushed? I don't think losing 5 scvs, even against a 6-pool, would be quite equal considering that's 250 minerals plus lost mining time where zerg probably has more drones back at home than you'd think.

Yeah, I know。 What I meant is the Terran is not expect the Zerg to go for 6-pool so he just build an standard wall that can block drones not lings. If the Zerg open the game normally when his 6 lings arrive at Terran's base the Terran would have an SCV to block the only the gap in the wall and have several marines behind that SCV and will be able to hold the lings at ease.
So overall I just want to say, dont blame the Terran for his wall, maybe you can blame him for his bunker position. But we have to praise the Zerg for a well planned and executed stats.

And I certainly don't think pro gamers enter a game thinking " there's a 50/50 chance this will work." They enter the game thinking, "i'm going to fucking own this guy." A proxy is all-in because of it doesn't succeed, you lose. However, a good player will execute it correctly much more than 50% of the time, otherwise it'd be a pretty shitty idea.
and... plz don't brag about being A-. I could sit on Iccup all day also choosing the map I want w/ the matchup I want, and get A- in about 4 weeks. Iccup rank means nothing.

On the other hand, they commentators mentioned that vulture practiced a long time for this tourney, so I would think the Chinese players had more time to practice these maps. Just a theory though =P

99% of progamers time is devoted to proleague maps, especially when they arent in starleagues and none of the 4 koreans are.

These maps are actually quite good for Korean at least. I heard the Commentators said that these maps are so new that Chinese players didnt play on them alot.

It is pretty impressive even though it was cheese! Orion's PvP isn't so bad, considering the calibur of the players he's played. 2x Stork win, Backho win, free win, Jangbi win. 7-9 overall, and like more than half of those losses are from players I just listed.

you can siege it from below along with tanks on the 2nd natural high ground and the p is funneled through that tiny choke into high ground tanks. structurally its a pretty good map to 2 fac on, its just dangerous because p's rarely do a straight fe build, and if they do itll be double nexus which makes the 2 fac really allin.

I find it considerably hard to play against good Terrans who have the FE builds down on this map. They're so close together, with all the ledge for protection. Normally P has to keep up w/ the exps, because if he does something like 2-gate reaver , 1-gate reaver, dt-rush, any of that stuff against FE on this map and fails, he loses. It's so easy for P to Nexus first on this map so T is tempted to FE & double EXP & then mass & push. I mean why go so standard? White-Ra so that push coming from a mile away, lost most of his units to it... and still won.
Idk, guess a better execution would make it look sexy.

what do you mean p keeps up with the expos? p always has more expos, especially on collo. the map size and the fact that protoss usually has the econ advantage from a double nexus (and the fact that its fucking impossible for terran to take a 4th) means that the p usually has an econ advantage and terran has to rely on one bigass upgraded push.
if protoss does an aggressive build vs a fast expo on any map and fails hes not gonna be in good shape. i dont really see your point.

most do, thats why 2 fac isnt a bad build on it. being allin doesnt make it a bad choice, just a risky one. its a pretty strong build vs double nexus.

I'm simply saying that certain strategies are more feasible on certain maps. For example, proxy rushes on Chu Pung Rung or Nexus first on KE. They're like that for a reason, usually because that's a more optimal build. I agree with you though, having the element of surprise can sometimes cease a win, but it's still a less optimal build, because a FE is more viable on this map... so you should do it to insure a win, esp. since it's Bo1.
As an avid P player, I find it much harder to play against the FE builds followed by vulture harrasses, or drop harrasses from T rather than a standard 2-fact build. It's tough to over power a massive + 2 Terran army and win in a macro-oriented game against T than it is an early-game battle. I mean that's how you win on that map, so that's what you have to do. Also, he didn't really have the element of surprise, so it was easy for White-Ra to defend against it.
Edit: and hard for T to reinforce w/ the 2-fact.

its not a hard pvt map, especially in the long game. terran cant take a 4th and the map is big as hell so terran ends up in a race against their resources trying to kill expos all over the map while being recalled to hell and back. you being unable to win doesnt mean its t>p.

True... then what if since 2-fact is a good build against P early exping because the T is most likely to early exp, that the P decides to 2-gate reaver instead of exp, then FE becomes good once again for T. :D
Risky builds define character IMO, and allow players to stand out.

Well if 2fact is a good build here since P is likely to FE then P might chose to do 2gate wich makes early EXP good for terran, and if terran earlyexp then toss will 14nexus, so terran might do 2rax which makes it a very good map for protoss to pylon forge cannon FE into scoutrush really...

Maybe, what puma did was hoping that white-ra would take a fast third, which is normal. Thats why he started massing units so fast and no ebay or academy. He could do so because he got the information he needed with his scouting scv. If you do this build and protoss does for example a proxy gate dt rush and denies your scout you will be in alot of trouble;) its abit risky build but it is VERY strong vs the standard 3base protoss.

Either way, he got a reaver out b4 exp and controlled it very well, to keep T in his main, which is the point of having the reaver besides owning SCVS, so Puma wouldn't have been able to push like he did, and may have lost some of his eco.

Wait, I thought that the group which lost twice (Group C, fengzi, orion, etc) would have 2 players eliminated. NonY's group lost the first day, putting them into Match 2, but they then won over Group C. Or does the defeated group of Match 3 also have to lose 2 of its players?
EDIT: nvm, the 1 win 2 loss group does lose 2 of its players.

It just speeds things up. Rather than clicking on the minimap or doubleclicking the controlkey for a specific building you click f2 f3 or f4. Its not really that hard once you get used to it. Its really good in lategame when you need to get back to macro really fast. Its also good when you see a reaver drop or such and you need to pull scvs. I jsut press f2 grab scvs press f3 click them to mine natural and repeat once to get all the scvs. It makes everything alittle faster, which is really good in the long run. Hotkeying structures and using f2 f3 f4 accurately is really important if you wanna play bw at a high level imo.

wow, so what basically happened was both players massing vultures, while kkong added more fact and cut scvs from mining gas to get as many vults as possible Puma started to make tanks from 2 and vults from only 2. Somehow puma had almost as many vultures as kkong, + the additional 6 or so tanks. wtf kkong missed suply or something?

had his group done better in the group vs group stage then bottom 2 from the group would have gone into a loser bracket, as it is bottom 2 will be eliminated.

Well, I suppose they are a bit put off because his statements might sound cocky. However, they have to at least be impressed with his results in this tournament as well as the recent Courage tournament. I didn't see Nony having much of a chance in either tournament, but still he almost won courage, which is wildly impressive, and he won two matches in this tournament, which shows that he's a player of a high calibre. I did expect White-Ra to be able to compete, but not Nony. From the sound of the comments in the PGL topics on here, many Chinese didn't expect Nony to win a single match either. He's doing great, and the developments of this tournament have certainly brought some excitement. I wouldn't count anyone out.
Even though it adds excitement, it's still a bit sad to see the Korean players lose to foreigners. It kind of punctures the myth that even Korean amateurs are light-years away from the level of the foreigners. It's not so much that I'm rooting for the Koreans, it's just that I'm hoping for as high level of Starcraft as possible, just like Brazilians do great in football. And in that sense it's great that some Korean amateurs are just amazing to watch, better than the top players that we normally see in action. So, in that sense I'm a bit dissapointed, these players looked set to dominate more than the Koreans who played last season. It was amazing to see Calm own it up at IEST as he was a good deal less known at that point.

Has anyone considered NonY might be holding off on his best builds because he's saving them for the stages of PGL that actually matter?
