Hi, I would love to see a BW tournament in LA. If there are organizers interested in doing something like this, I'd be happy to donate / match to some extent. Perhaps a poll would be useful:

Poll: Would you attend an LA tournament

Definitely (35)

60%

Maybe (17)

29%

Probably not (6)

10%

58 total votes

Your vote: Would you attend an LA tournament

(Vote): Definitely
(Vote): Maybe
(Vote): Probably not

I would definitely be interested, though likely won't have the time to organize. At the very least I could help advertise and advocate for the event to get some good competitive players going.

I'm in LA and have a venue/pc bang we've used in the past for PUBG/LoL tournaments. If there is enough interest, I'll make it happen.

That's awesome, around how many people (and money) would qualify as enough interest? I'm assuming having some sort of sign up sheet and buy in like the NYC LAN is doing would be good to help fund the venue.

I think if I could get a solid 16+ players with a $5/$10 buy in, then I think I could get a $300-$500 prize pool. If I could get 32 players, then maybe more.

The buy-in is just to cover the costs of taking up a PC at the cafe for a couple of hours. Typically our tournaments there have allowed players to play for most of their time there and ideally we'd have a setup so everyone gets enough opportunities to play without simply going 0-2 and being done for the day.

On top of that, the pc cafe has always provided free food to the players - pizza, tacos, sandwiches, they just pick something the day of. In addition, Lotte has also provided us with a ton of snacks/drinks for the players.

That's awesome man, that would actually be a pretty legit tournament then. If someone wants to take hold of official tournament organizing, I can put together some grassroot efforts to build hype, funds, and awareness of the tournament (i.e. hosting NA events/fundraisers leading up to the tournament to donate to the prize pool, etc.).

At the end of the day, whoever is the official organizer will command the ship on it. I'd be down if it's just a small, fun event, but would also be down to build up to something larger. I have some ideas circulating in my head and I'm sure I can get some of the Blizzard team to join up for funsies, though not sure if we can justify an actual contribution from them.

I have some mountain climbing goals up in LA County, if the time is right I'd drive up and buy in just to support the event.

That would be super cool! In case you didn't see, we are planning an NYC LAN right now (I think it may have been the inspiration for this thread, haha). I imagine it's kinda late into the game to sort things out for this one, but I will definitely contact you when we inevitably begin planning a second installment <3

LA definitely would invite a scene I would be more interested in meeting than NY. I'd give the trip serious consideration.

I'll wait to see if there's any interest with casters but if worst comes to worst, I'm sure we can designate a few player-casters to rotate around when not playing. I have some casting experience myself and would be happy to hop in here and there when I'm not playing, though ideally it would be best to have a couple heading the job.

Once we ink in a date and get things set, I can start promoting and hosting events to raise funds towards the LAN.

To keep those interested updated:

Was hoping to do it towards the end of August, but looks like it will have to be in September.
The good news is an event is very likely to happen with a base prize pool of $300-$500.

Nice, that's a good base prize pool.

I could probably attend early-mid September if it falls in those dates.

I think there needs to be a concrete date set first and foremost and then plan around that. Right now it's just too much speculation to say "well, I'll come if it's on XYZ date." If we have a concrete date, then at least with some high certainty, people can say they will attend.

Obviously, there are a ton of variables and organizers should do what is best for them, but a lot of players made plans to attend a meet up at Dreamhack in Montreal, Sep. 7-8. I'm not sure how much overlap there is from the west coast, but I know that personally I wouldn't be able to make it that weekend, but would definitely come to an event that was after then.

I agree, if it's at all possible I think October would be better. I know 3-4 people that haven't posted in the thread yet that can probably make it in October but not in early-mid September. Either way, I'm stoked for a LAN and hope we can find a time that works best for most people.

I've thought about it and I would contribute a couple hundred bucks to the prize pool if it was later in September. I would also donate an original BW painting for the 1st place winner as well.

NYC LAN #2 may be some time in October as well so if things come together this way, please reach out to me so we can book separate weekends. Month of Brood War revival?

I also was planning on going to LA if the lan was in October (as I am going to Montreal in September on top of other family obligations I have). If there is another NYC lan in October I would 100% go to that as well.

Ok, here is a poll of possible dates.

Some things to consider:
  1. A better setup for commentators could be provided on the 14th. Not able to guarantee it for later dates at the moment.
  2. Sundays for the same weekends are also a possibility.

Poll: Preferred Date

September 14 (4)

17%

September 21 (0)

0%

September 28 (1)

4%

October 5 (19)

79%

24 total votes

Your vote: Preferred Date

(Vote): September 14
(Vote): September 21
(Vote): September 28
(Vote): October 5

The venue would be K-Town PC Cafe - 2748 W 8th St #201, Los Angeles, CA 90005

I'll try getting the date confirmed next week.

What if down the line we did West coast vs. East coast LANs? We all meet in our respective LANs then face one another over B.net as one of the events for the day, like a pro league match? Have an East coast and West coast caster? I think this could be fun

I looked around a little on the Google map and found a place very close by for Korean BBQ:

TGI Korean BBQ
2585 W Olympic Blvd
LA, CA 90006

It seems they're open from 11-1AM, and they have all-you-can-eat for $18.99 according to one review. Perhaps afreecaTV.Char knows the area better and can recommend this or suggest a better place?

In light of what happened recently with Incontrol. I'm not sure if he could have made it to our LAN but if he had heard about it, he might have tried. He was that kind of guy.

Could those that show up to this tournament, instead of buying in, place the money into a pool to be donated to the SoCal Bulldog Rescue in his memory? And perhaps we could dedicate the tournament in his memory? Not sure if that feels too "crass" or not.

Thoughts?

I've never ate there, but my co-worker who lives in K-Town recommended these two:

Oo Kook - 3385 W 8th St, Los Angeles, CA 90005

Moodaepo II - 3014 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90005
(CEO Kevin ate at this one.)

Building up an East vs West rivalry would be awesome, even if it is just a show match between the winners.

Also, I would like to do something for iNcontroL, but truthfully I'm not sure of the best way to go about it to satisfy all parties involved. I'll bring it up internally as part of the overall proposal and see what we can do.

Apologies to everyone for not having it finalized this week, but we are making progress.

That'd be really cool! I wish Starcraft fans took some inspiration/initiative from how FGC runs their tournaments. They have incredibly hype tournaments with compelling storylines with like absolutely 0 budget from the publishers. It's actually amazing.

Anyway, I live eighty minutes from LA so I can't wait for this to happen!
