I've decided to organize a little mini DRTL, including C- players, it will start on November 1st and run through December 6th.
Two main reasons for this are:
There is a good amount of downtime before DRTL playoffs start (20th of December) so hopefully this can fill the void and give guys a reason to play some games and get activity going
To serve as a pilot for a combined D Ranks + C- guys teamleague next season, with a format that avoids pitting guys that can't hit D+ with guys that can almost get to C. If it works smoothly and there is interest, I'd be willing to re-incorporate lower yellow rankers into the league
Format:
5 weeks of Round Robin Play, Bo5 series paired within rank, so players will never face anyone more than one rank ahead of them.

We would probably need to get a few D ranks on your team, or else you guys would just have to play the C- only games. This short league is casual so it doesn't really matter, but obviously for the full league taking 2-3 losses guaranteed every time would pretty much be death.
I don't think it would be fair to allow an all C- team to field C- guys versus D guys, no to mention that it can be really frustrating to the D- guys. Which leaves as far as I can initially think of, 3 options:
1)Draft D's onto the team 2)Take the losses, even though that pretty much kills any chance of winning 3)Get teams to field only D+/C- line up specifically against you guys, obviously contigent on them having sufficient D+ to do so.
That's all I can initially think of, and each has problems, so if someone has a more clever solution by all means drop the knowledge bombs on me.

A league where everyone is equally good, will always be much more boring, than diversity. The tension of a underdog winning against a clear favorite is much more thrilling than X1 winning against X2 winning against X3 winning against X1.

Stacked I have no issue with, in fact I agree with you.
My concern, and one expressed by other players, is that a pure C- team cannot field D players against D players. This matters because except for the very rare few that already adore the game at D...it ends up being a massive turnoff getting face stomped by a C- guy on a regular basis.

Ratio I'm guessing would be at least 50% C- or better. Just think of last DRTL we played in.
You could call it coddling I guess, but there is a point where skill difference is too great to make the games meaningful. I'm sorry, but neither of us are ever going to lose to player that can't even hit D+. This can be fine for training purposes, but in a league people want to feel like they get to play meaningful games and at least have a remote chance at winning.
That's also why I'm okay with games being within one rank. C- doesn't have to play only C-, but by the time you have C- playing D or D- the result is a foregone conclusion.
I don't think it's coddling. It's very difficult to be crushed week after week against opponents you have no reasonable shot against. Once they make it through the awkward D/D- stage, you get solid D+ players. For instance Minsc_andboo. But when we were talking about how the DRTL worked before (C- players included) vs now, this was Minsc's opinion:

As someone who has hit D+ once (though not held it), I'm perfectly willing to play against C- players. But there is wide gap between even my skill level and D-. In addition, there are very few people willing to go 0-11 in a league without quitting, but if they can play reasonably competitive matches, we will wind up with a few more D+ players in the long run. Starting BW as cannon fodder for C- can be very depressing. Even the skill gap between D+ and D- is depressingly large.
When I played other "D"s in the beginning of the season I know that I'll probably lose as soon a player's scouting worker enters my base by the way he controls it. I still try my best but I have never won against player who has ~800 points more than me. I can't even cheese them.
eg: I just got owned a three times in a row by a Chinese guy whose max rank was C+ who said that he hasn't played in 2 years after I told him he was good. I can beat D- players without much effort and by fooling around (sunkened the opponent's main in medusa without sneaking it from behind) and it feels like D+ players are destroying me without putting much of their own effort.
I strongly agree that some kind of tier-ed pairings should occur. I feel like skill differences are especially pronounced at the ranks participating in this league. Upsets make a league more exciting, but while the last CRTL (with an even bigger spectrum of ranks playing) had it's fair share of underdogs winning or at least putting up a good fight, DRTL has pretty much always been predictable as soon as the lineups were announced and the amount of one-sided stomps has been overwhelming. In DRTL5 there were a lot of players who left mid-season exactly because of the huge inequality in skill.
That being said, I support the suggestion made by minsc about forcing every team to field e.g. 3 d/d+ players and 2 C- players. Maybe, it's even worth considering splitting the lineups in some other way (say 1 D-, 2 D/D+, 2 C-) depending on the people that join the league. I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is, but the plain unfair pairings that used to happen quite a bit in the past need to be avoided this time.
As an "outsider" to this league, here are my thoughts after reading the thread.
1) It'll be much easier to find a solution for the rank pairing idea once teams/free agents have signed up. What is the rank composition of the teams that are expected to sign up? Seems like you'd have to just autodraft d- d d+ free agents to the teams lacking those ranks. I guess as last resort you could swap a c- for a d-/d of another team (but I don't expect people will want to leave a team they've played with for 5 seasons).
So...
2) You'll need enough new free agents signing up to balance the teams. I think getting in contact with iccup.Face (iccup admin) to make a server announcement regarding sign ups for this league and making a thread on iccup.com forums would benefit you a lot (moreso the sever announcement). I don't imagine you'll find enough new blood just posting here on TL.

So, what happens when there is a D rank vs D Rank game in this, and one side gets absolutely one-way stomped, and that makes the looser feel like they have no meaning in playing/makes them want to quit? People feeling bad from getting stomped seems to be the most pressing concern here, so I think it probably needs to be addressed beforehand. Can they just cry that their opponent isn't actually D rank, and is in fact higher? What if they just silently quit the league after getting stomped by another D Rank player?
iccup Artanis[Xp] race Zerg max rank C many many seasons ago. I think the league is a perfect fit for my skill level as I've been inactive for quite some time, though I'd understand if you want to avoid a sliding scale.

Strikes me that since the league will be short, then decide whether one belongs in C or D camp prior to the season starts. Then no complaining allowed during the league. If we play another mini-league in the future, then adjustments can be made based on past performance. Mid-season adjustments are always messy, imo.
I suspect your last question is rather dismissive of the split idea, but look, while we cannot account for all persons, we can attempt a reasonably competive environment. Rather than throwing D- in the same pool as C-. Some will still quit in the shallow end; we cannot stop that. But that doesn't mean we HAVE to throw them into the deep end.
Well, pre-formed teams will hopefully start announcing themselves here soon with their rosters. Then we will see who we have, distribution of players and such, and then do a draft for the free agents starting on Wednesday.
This is still tied to the max rank, right? Thought about MAYBE trying playing some BW again, but not entirely sure. However, my "max rank" was C about five years ago. Last time I played (half a year ago?) I ended up something like 1-3 against chrisolo or something.

The position of captain will probably be done by committee. rlentless has remained active in BW since we won DRTL, the rest of us have not been. I personally have not touched BW since DRTL5 Finals, outside of 1 game vs BigFan (which was more like a game vs a CPU). Due to our inactivity, and not having touched the game in a long time, I'll leave it to Lmaster to determine which rank each of us counts as. If not enough of us are deemed fit to play in the "D Tier" of this league, we may not be able to play in it at all.

I don't see too much of an issue with this except the fact that its only 2 teams, and someone has to captain either team.
We have something like 20-25 signups in the thread, so easily enough to add a team or 2. I do need to know who is going to captian for Courage so i can get them in the skype group.

True. And while I think it remains a moot issue at this point, I don't subscribe to the "once a cheat, always a cheat" moniker. People can, and do change. This isn't to say this applies specifically to Babo, as I have no real idea whether he has matured enough in that standpoint to not cheat, or whether he has shown contrition.

Yep, since it's a casual short league it's play your game by 48 hours after scheduled time or the person who showed at designated time gets WO. If both didn't show it just becomes a null set.
Pebble, we need to get this draft done. It's dragging out hardcore atm. I've messaged you in several spots several times on skype with no response in the last day or so.
You already drafted your initial guys but we still have about 14 guys or so left, and 2 guys you drafted already had decided they wanted other teams.
You've got 12 hours from time of post to get me a list of remaining players in the order you want them, so we can finish the draft without the need for you to be present since it's seems you're not on skype a ton. If not we're just going to assign your team players at random.

I wasn't going to be running a team, just playing in some team (I think the big sB/TAKK team?). Xboi209 has all the code already, he's part of the team that's been working on StarServer for ages. And yes, I never made a promise.

There aren't really any C players. A couple have made the rank but none are currently active playing at it. In my book those guys count the same as C-.
Looks like this league has a little over half C- guys, which means having 4 four C- guys is probably right, then 2 D+, and one D guy given that there are not a ton of guys that are sporting D-/D as a max rank.

I'm going to say no there. MOTW often sucks, and for leagues like this it tends to work best where people can easily view games being played on the maps (snipe) and find replays of them. Not to mention going by MOTW you don't know, iirc, what it will be for several weeks in advance so if a player knows...Sniper Ridge for instance is coming up in several weeks he can prepare for it a ways out if he wants. That isn't an option under MOTW system.
Agree with the Jade thing, so instead of FS for week 6 we will use Neo Jade. No need for repeat FS imo.

Oh yeah, we have Ryuhou)aS( on our team as well. Hes a D ranked Zerg, so I guess that puts us with 3 D ranks. I still think Nagisama should be able to play as a D+ anyway, so we can have a bit of leway incase someone can't make it.
When DO matches start? Specifically, what is the default playing time (is there one)? I really don't want to have to deal with rescheduling with my current timezone and lab schedule unless it happens to work out well. And given my history of trying to reschedule....well it was a massive pain.

Btw, this only adds up to 6 for a best of 7.
It's a little different than the way you read it. Each week uses one map for all seven games.

So I'd like to take what I can get (even if it is ridiculous to ban random in a fun tournament, you all take this WAAAAY to serious. Like really?). I wanna play "Random and tell" and I am fine with my matchup being annonymous, so I do not know my opponent race until just before the match, too.
But I'd like to apply for D or at least D+ skill level. I have roughly played 60 or 70 1on1 in the past 3 years (including like 20 or 30 DRTL/CRTL games). Yes I have hit C-, but I am really noobish. Especially playing all 3 races and all 9 matchups.

Despite being on the same team, I disagree with this second proposal, first one is up to Lmaster, but no specific practice kind of defeats the purpose of prep leagues.
You want to be both random and to have easier opponents (where playing random will be a greater advantage), for a fun league you care a lot about winning in that case.
I dont like the idea of segregating competition any more than necessary. Why should worse players be coddled? As long as their isnt any overwhelming amount of c- players in pool as a whole, D players will primarily be meeting other D rank players. But that shouldnt mean they dont run the risk of getting curb stomped, or perhaps even rise to the occasion and beat someone whos 'better'.
Finding myself on both sides of the fence it's both not fun being owned and not fun owning people so hard. It's much more entertaining to play somewhat close games which is hopefully what this will end up doing.

Despite being on the same team, I disagree with this second proposal, first one is up to Lmaster, but no specific practice kind of defeats the purpose of prep leagues.
You want to be both random and to have easier opponents (where playing random will be a greater advantage), for a fun league you care a lot about winning in that case.
lol, if I would care about winning I would not choose to take the massive disadvantage of playing random. Really most of the people here complaining about random, never played random themselves. Its a massive addition of knowledge you need to understand 9 matchups instead of 3. If I would care about winning, I would play Protoss only (easy race).
I am only asking to re-evaluate my ranking, as I just play some matches yesterday and saw that I suck hard. I do not mind playing in the C- class, as I will have my fun, but I just wanted to say that I am definitly not C- anymore and thus might lower the fun part for the C- players having literally zero competition.
I dont like the idea of segregating competition any more than necessary. Why should worse players be coddled? As long as their isnt any overwhelming amount of c- players in pool as a whole, D players will primarily be meeting other D rank players. But that shouldnt mean they dont run the risk of getting curb stomped, or perhaps even rise to the occasion and beat someone whos 'better'.
Finding myself on both sides of the fence it's both not fun being owned and not fun owning people so hard. It's much more entertaining to play somewhat close games which is hopefully what this will end up doing.

I really don't think ease of facilitation and practicing for new players weighs up to the downsides of having one set map for each round. I request that you poll this, if necessary just with the newer players because I personally feel that having one map per round will be very detrimental to the enjoyment, both in terms of strategy as well as watching casts or casting.
I agree with Artanis. Having one map per week is simply dull. You cannot really have a team strategy by setting up players on different maps etc etc.
I loved the differentiation of maps, since some people were exclussively seeded on some maps, so you could try to snipe the player with one of your own players, which trained specifically for that player. Sometimes the opposing player wasnt seeded or was seeded on a different map, so it was kind of a tactical maneuver.
So please start a poll for it. And since I know you, you might see this too late, so I ll just create one for you. If you do not want to use it, just make another one.

I agree that having different maps provides more variety but it makes it harder to match players against similar ranked players. With different maps you have situations where one team fields a c- player on fs while the other team fields a d player. When its the same map for everyone you can just match the players with their ranks.
I think a way if people want different maps is to have maps different but have them designated with a rank for the week. Like for one week fs is for d players, circuit breaker and sniper ridge for d+ players and the rest for c- players.

I've voted. I don't mind. Playing LESS of the normal maps is better for improvement imo. Which I still think these leagues are about, self-improvement.
I've voted for yes as playing on purely one map as a whole team each week is silly. To become better you need to learn more maps and adapt to them. Sure you could field yourself on FS every week, but then another team will just snipe you.

Are you concerned about race-picking in general, or playing as random vs a race-picker? IDK if there is a rule for the latter, since randoms have been pretty rare.

First, this teamleague has had multiple seasons and pretty sure this topic came up once or twice before, and considering it's still the trend, it's probably not a major issue with most folks. Second, the league's intended for players ranked D- and slightly to C-. Are you expecting some Proleague quality set of rules and guidelines? Your opponent is going random on a computer game, not picking a weapon of choice to kill your family and friends. Third, "pick always random and tell the oponent as soon as the game starts" is the situation. I believe all random players are required to random-and-tell.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding him right, but he is playing random-and-tell. And hes complaining about himself playing against a race-picker. So if hes playing someone who plays like ZvP, TvZ, and PvT, and he plays random, I could see there being a conflict.

if you had said something before we play i could have maybe agreed to it but you didn' t say anything. Usually i play P vs random cause theres more chance of pvz or pvt than pvp. then we could have had a normal game instead of the cheesy hydra bust you pulled off. In a real macro match you would have lost to me.

The default time is convenient for a lot of time zones but not all of them, if the requested PP time did not suit you, you could have talked to your opponent about an alternate PP time convenient for you both. Most of us are adults that have lives and jobs to take care of, so we can't commit to having every Saturday free at exactly at that time. Also, 3-6hours before match time (which was what Kaze suggested) is like 1pm-4pm CET, why in the world are you staying up the whole night to that time in the first place and then complaining about being well rested, when for Kaze the default time is 3AM.

This is a global league for no prize money. It's for lower ranks and is all about giving lower ranked players a chance to play in more formal competition than they would normally ever get the chance to. Not only is it a global league meaning people from all 24 hours of time zones, BW is a seventeen year old game.and most of the people that play the game are in their 20's or beyond...which means everyone has jobs, families, and other responsibilities to take care of. Their world does NOT revolve around this league, nor do I expect it to.
All of which means we allow games to be PPed. Don't like that? Then don't play in the league if that isn't cool with you because thats integral to the way we operate around here. It's absolutely 100% acceptable for KazeHydra or anyone else to "not make themselves 20 minutes for one fucking game" and you are completely, absolutely, and unequivocally in the wrong by demanding he be there at game time to play.
As for the little round of whining about not getting sleep...perhaps you shouldn't agree to a PP time in which you're playing with no sleep? There never was a malicious intent behind my post. Actually, I thought it was commendable that there is an effort to rotate as many players as possible into the lineups. However, you must understand that I was honestly amused to have received that message from Arca 3 days after writing him. I guess, I should have put a smiley face next to the screenshot. Watching back the game I played makes me want to be more active again. I meched so much before that I learnt fake mech and won with it most of the time, that along with my mech got me into C-, but Sabas abused my bad turret placement and delayed my barracks so much along with me being rusty that I never had a chance to get it going :p

How variable can work times be. Are you like an EMT or something?
Retail though you get a schedule at least weekly, if you're lucky monthly, and know when you work. Sure sometimes you get asked to stay later, but its pretty rare if you schedule something 4+ hours before or after a shift that you won't be able to make it.

this is a normal drtl run. its active in the beginning and never gets a real finish, since it gets inactive as fuck until the next season (see last drtl season, which didnt even have its finals yet afaik)

It slowed down due to holidays. I haven't been around for 2weeks and I'm sure I'm not the only one that has been away.
Same as Tonight and Nagisama said, Christmas/New Years or whatever holidays you celebrate tend to slow down activity for BW, but it should get finished soon.

Absolutely. You gotta be a lazy mofo to organize BW leagues in between working full time, going to school, and training 15 hours a week. Not to mention having to sit on trial the last week and a half.
I appreciate criticism and constructive feedback. That helps me improve what I do and improve the leagues I run. What I do not appreciate is being called lazy by someone who doesn't have any idea about whether or not I'm lazy whatsoever and who does nothing whatsoever for the BW scene to begin with.
I take time out of my schedule to organize these because people do seem to enjoy them and no one else is willing to step up to the plate and do so. If you're not satisfied with the league I run, you're welcome to organize your own.

Maybe you shouldnt forget I also organized a league for this. And yes I know that this is pretty time consuming, but when you commit to organizing a league, you should not go afk after some weeks all the time. I appreciate your efforts, but this is not the first time a league you organized went downhill. I can't recall the last DRTL (the one where you excluded C-) being finished, yet, either. I can understand that you not have time for organizing something, but then just simply do not start a league. I also do not have time at the moment, so I do not act foolishly and start a league, just to let it die off at the end. Don't get me wrong, I like you Eric, but you already used your studies/work explanation too often. It can happen once or twice that you misjudge the time used for organization, but not all the time.
Also you do not know what I am doing for BW. It might not be a lot (sometimes small tourneys, technical advision for the German KotH, graphical stuff from time to time and some intro teaser video stuff), but just assuming I am doing "nothing whatsoever" is stupid.

Yes that's also the problem, but you cannot blame the players. If there would be a clear ranking, there would be a bigger competetive aspect to the league. Just playing for "nothing" (not even a ranking), will not keep the players active. It's a league after all and people play to compete against each other.

I think most were played. Actually, I was wrong. I thought I had updated everything for Takk, but the last week was just before Christmas, so I had forgot to update Week 5.
Week 5 I just need to know Lmaster and IceDraco's result. . .and I need Flyer's results for every week he played (Week 3-5) because I have yet to see him report in. Then week 4- TheMarine vs prophecy and Week 3, IceDcrao vs Napoleon.
I don't even remember who played back in those matches. Due to reasons however, Courage doesn't really seem to have any interest or motivation to continue in the next round. So unless somoene else on the team wants to step up and take over PMing Lmaster every week, we are out.

Missing DeSPA results that I know of:
Week3 TAKK vs DeSPA
Flyer vs Scriv was never played either because Flyer could not commit to a time with Scriv, I'd say its more of a trend, given what I've seen in the thread..
Icedraco vs Napoleon was also not played, although Napoleon was there at game time, no idea what final status on that was
Week 4 DNH vs Sabas, was not played as Sabas had quite a few instances of not being able to get his BW to run on Linux, last message I sent him was December 26th, still unanswered.
