Guys I know you hate the format, so do I, but I owe it to the players to be there for them. 2011-2012 SK PlanetProLeague Season 2Round 1 Week 1 Monday May 21st 05:00 GMT (+00:00)
Playing Sc2 one day, Brood War the next. :\ I feel so bad for the players, it's hard enough to practice a lot and be on your A-game for one game yet alone two.
Wait, WTF!? This is coming on at 2pm KST? Kind of depressing that SPL has been demoted to a time slot where people are working or still in school. Is LOL filling in OGN's prime time slot now?

It makes sense to use this season as filler. I don't know of too many people who are really satisfied with the format, and BWs was already struggling. Even if you are one of the people that enjoys both games, the overall quality of play is not at the highest level (understandably, given the demands of practicing two very different games) and this season is more about transition for the players, teams, and broadcaster than it is about fans, viewership, and profit.

Sudden Attack is at 6pm
whats the difference between sudden attack and special forces, aren't they the same or am I just confused.

I think the season was already under way by the time PL started so they didn't want to mess with the schedule.

Hey guys... I'm a SC2 guy straying far from home! Is there an English restream of this that you guys are aware of? Thanks! I'd love to watch, but i find bw hard to understand without English casters

BW even dying is still probably the most popular esport in Korea. And IMO certainly not worth a demotion to 2pm, the time when people have just finished eating lunch and about to go back to work/classes.
Edit: Saw Ryo's post. I can understand that, but still kind of depressing.
Merging BW and SC2 into one league reminds me of Sonic Generations where both classic and modern styles are used. Having the old and the new played side by side seems to be a good idea. As far as I'm concerned, Generations was the best game in the series in a long time and this tournament format is a really innovative breath of fresh air from traditional BW or SC2 leagues.

The concept could be good if it was dedicated Brood War and StarCraft II pros playing their respective games, but having the same player play both gives us underwhelming Brood War and incomprehensible StarCraft II.

Yes, both played SC2 first round and so both have to be assigned to a BW match before they can be used in SC2 again. Effort looked like one of the stronger SC2 players last night, so I imagine he'll get a lot of play in both games. JD's SC2 looked really undeveloped so far though.

Jaedong has too many lings. hero cancels hatch, loses all his lings. Jaedong heading for Heros main. Hero has nothing but drones, fights until he loses most drones.... Hero GG's.

CJ is a team that is satisfying to root for, its players are badass and generally everyone likes CJ and its fans.

We have Effort, one of the greatest zerg ballers out there (you saw him cream flash last night I assume)
CJ is a pretty deep team (at least in BW)--which allows them to dominate dream league (the BW minor league) and play well in Bo7 formats.
Horang2 is a totally loveable and awesome player as well, as is Leta.

Its not really that his build was bad. 12 hatch in base is just fine if you make it to muta tech. Its just more defensive than 12 hatch in natural. The thing was he had a really bad ling engagement and lost map control. Without that, you can't take your natural and Jaedong's build he would've been able to immediately make his 2nd gas into muta tech if he spotted lair from herO.

Timeslot certainly isn't the only reason why there are less than 15 pple in the audience. There have been midweek lunch time matches before.

cj just has the best overall "team" lineup for each race and I think it's good to cheer for them if you don't have a favourite player. Their zerg, protoss, and terran (well mainly leta) are all solid.
you don't have things like skt zerg or kt zerg (kt zerg are clutch playoffs, lose in the season). Samsung is all protoss, team 8 is wonky, ace is awesome but you'll be a sad fan.Woongjin doesn't have a great terran except light tvz, and stx got revived this season with new talent (last, dear).

Waiting for the second hatch to come online meant Jaedong had plenty of time to get his expo up, and since he took his drones out of gas it meant his lair was going to be late anyway.

BW-siege tanks are really good.
jaedong is really good at BW (or so it seemed)

this battle im watchin right now seems big and spread out, more like a war with small engagements and inexorable pushes than a singular battle

Its a machine shop, an addon that lets you make tanks and goliaths, upgrades for mech are researched there.

machine shop. BW terran doesnt have generic tech labs but building-specific tech labs. the machine shop is the tech lab that only works for factories. starports have control towers. barracks have none.

He should probably watch something with an english commentary/analysis to understand the game better first. If you cant find anything sc2fan, Day9 episodes 1-80ish cover BW and he always has good input that newer players can understand.

True. But you know, I am slowly growing into this format, despite thinking it was ridiculous when I first heard about it. I would be fairly happy if they maintained this format for subsequent seasons and divided the players into BW and Sc2 specialists. Maybe have a clause that the bw specialists need to switch to being sc2 specialists mid-season and vice versa.

Yeah this format would be sweet... if they had specialists. The problem right now is we're just not going to get the best if the players have to focus on two games at once. I don't think Sc2 or BW fans want to see that. I think the best thing about this format is that it's really introducing Sc2 fans to Brood War, and vice versa. A whole new generation of Brood War fans may be born from this new format.

I believe another factor is that you never get as many workers in Brood War as you do in Sc2 (I believe). So along with the supply's being different there is also more room for army supply.

the worker thing has a lot to do with it. in sc2 the best worker number is 72 for toss and terran and around 90 for zerg. 72 being the best because a 3 base econ is really all you need and you need 24 workers to get the max number from any base (18 minerals 6 gas)

There's a difference between being able to do something and actually carrying it out during a live match. A D+ player would have crumbled under the pressure as well.

Pretty sure it would be that way regardless, its such a shitty time.
Honestly, don't take audience into account until they move to the prime time slot probably next week. Yesterday all four games had big audiences and good reactions to both games. Today there is like 20 people there.
I don't know but the SC2 games and SC1 games are dreadful compared to past seasons. I would not be surprised if people weren't too interested. I know I'm not really interested. If I wanted to watch SC2, I'd watch some good players play the game instead of people who have only played it for a few months.
I'm fine with SC2 and SC:BW but this mixed proleague seems to do nothing but deteriorate SC1 gameplay and present some really bad quality SC2 games.

Yeah it's pretty empty... But I'm completely new with Broodwar. I bought the game two weeks ago to play it a bit and try to understand something on this Proleague. So I don't have any "reference" to compare.
you guys are making it sound like mid afternoon BW only matches had huge audiences....
I've watched many a fair few where there has been like 10 people in the studio just because the time was awful. Lets be honest, people in korea who watch this are in school (as am I right now...teaching and watching like a pro) or working or in class at uni. The only people who could possibly be there for an afternoon game are the unemployed and arts students

This.
Back in the day when we had a full proleague with 12 teams and amazing players, TvT was seen as a snorefest in general, barring great matches like FlaSh v Firebathero.
Now that we have SC2 ball v ball (trick question: that's all 9 match-ups, except maybe PvP) as a baseline, BW TvT is a blessing.

Playing for CJ is skyhigh, of a Terran lineage that includes Xellos and Iris, most famous for his Winners League all-kill a few years ago, in which, at a point in his career where he was almost unknown, he faced Jaedong and won. Known for his BW TvT.

Yeah, but the difference is that there's no zerg imba right now.
I'm not really up to speed on the whole metagame of SC2, but I've always felt that just the nature of the matchup is volatile simply due to mismicros costing games. Not just the BO aspect.

Yea that is true, but back before the changes to warpgate and sentry build time you could get a Bo loss real easy and pvp was a mess. That's why I think that pvp is in a lot more stable place now than it was.You can still loose really easy if you don't micro well that is true.

The toss players have been (for the most part) the only players that look kinda competent in SC2 so far, I suppose it's easier to transition from BW -> SC2 than the other races. The premise is there, within this really strange meta of playing both games, Protoss seems to be the best SC2 race, pending more development time.

Also, if anyone know Coach Han's history could give me a rundown it would be appreciated. I swear he didn't do anything significant in Oz and now in T8.
Also Dear God T8, at least learn how to do a basic 4-gate even if you fail every other shit. Even Diamond players can do better than this.

That said, didn't the current GSL feature 3 protoss semi-finalists? So at the very top of the Korean scene tosses still seem quite OP.
I don't think the race is OP. There is a large debate about PvT mid/late-game (the Protoss deathball is quite powerful against bio) but that's not enough to make the race OP imo.
sc2 seems to always take a long time to set up and start the game, and there have been more pauses mid game in the last 2 days than the last 2 years combined of bw

It's really about the style the BW players have been following. They seem to be going for imitations of the more macro-oriented styles used in top SC2 at the moment without fully understanding them, and that favours Protoss players because it's all about macroing and teching up.

I don't think the race is OP. There is a large debate about PvT mid/late-game (the Protoss deathball is quite powerful against bio) but that's not enough to make the race OP imo.
Protoss have also not been winning a ton of tournaments. They've had a couple good seasons, but last season DRG, a zerg, won. And this season MVP, a terran won. This weekend's MLG invitational also saw 3 zergs in the top 3.

Yeah, modern blink build you get 3 gates and a robo to have an observer to be able to not be blocked by forcefields like it happened here.

yeah if you are going blink you need 4 gates or else you start baking a lot of gas/min

They probably need some time to switch out of BW and all its plugins and into SC2.
Plus, you can tweak so many settings in SC2, like hotkeys, interface, and graphics. And everyone seems to have different settings, so there is almost always a long setup time in between players at any SC2 tournament.
And forcing all players into playing on a uniform, "standard" set of settings seems really unfair even if it would lower the setup time.

I think it's stupid to have an LR that doesn't show all results... The OP links for SC2 results to the LR thread in the SC2 section... is this really necessary?
Is SPL on every Mon and Tue at this time? That sucks hard since I won't be home in time to watch the BW section :/

Yeah, I feel it's kind of lazy. Should post full results, instead of sending me to another thread and making me open two more spoilers :/ I would have just went to the SC2 LR report if I knew.
Didn't even knew they were going to play today TT it's not that bad thou, since with this time schedule I couldn't see it anyways.
Did season 1 have better audiences than before with this time slot? Or wasn't a starcraft thing and it was more a "it's time for another game to be on prime time" thing?
I also hate this format, I also hate seeing SCtoo in PL, but You should include SCtoo matches also, because our beloved progamers and teams are playing. I don't like at all going to two threads just to see how it turned and who won. Please, next time include SCtoo games as well. Thank You!
According to Coach Han, Jaehoon's keyboard malfunctioned and he kept waving his hands in the booth for the Kespa referee to pause play but they took more than 10 seconds to respond to him and pause the game. That's why Coach Han was so pissed off with them and wanted a regame.

storm drops on the mineral line are good. Just havent been experimented with much
Not particularly. It takes twice as many storms to do the same sort of damage and chances are the workers aren't going to stick around for the second set of storms.

It does 80 damage, so a storm will kill the workers if they do not move away I think. Hwever most players will move their harvesters in time. I think stromdrop harrasment will also not be used, solely because of the fact that sentry harrasment (forcfield the mineral line in then warp in zealots) is more efficient.

The truth is, with Sc2's AI, its really easy to avoid storm drops, the workers dont stack in eachanother and you dont have to click on a gas / mineral to make them run away without a problem. Also the size of storm is smaller. Like Blizzard wanted to destroy every old school protoss harass from BW to Sc2 >.<

There were actually some very famous games by Whitera and mostly by SKMC where they used storm drops and even more awesomely HTs in Warpprisms (Shuttle 2.0) to dodge EMPs etc. It is very good and effective but hard as hell to pull off (personaly, as Protoss player back in BW i would compare it with Reaver micro, in certain situations even harder because of better oponent ai and less life on HTs) This style if very rare as is now but i think it will get more and more as protoss gets better.
Jaedong is valiantly holding the front line and I respect him and I hope all bw pro gamers who are facing difficulty right now will show undying and undefeated courage at dark times like this.

You can but SCII Protoss kinda doesn't harass much since they try to amass a giant death army like BW Terran. Its more that than storm drops being crap. As for reaver type drops, zergs can load up banelings inside overlords and execute what's sometimes called 'Bane Rain' either carpet bombing workers or the clumped up Protoss deathball.

You are right, however carpet bombing, although still being hard to pull off, is not nearly as dificoult as Reaver micro. Its still a very nice and underused "mechanic" in the game, which, when pulled of properly, is disgustingly effective!

So much for the idea that the terrible PL teams from last season would be more ready for SC2. It doesn't look like they got more SC2 practice than last season's playoff teams.

You're talking about Lee Hun Joo, who has got her own fanclub here on TL. She last appeared at the GSL finals at Blizzcon 2011 in Anaheim CA and currently is on a pregnancy/baby break.
The other female person you're thinking of is in charge of post-/mid-game interviews at GSL/GSTL and I heard she's the significant other of GSL Code S caster Colossus.
Im really surprised and impressed with the SC2 guys in these recent threads who are open to trying to understand BW and even open minded enough to see where BW does a few things "better" than SC2 does currently. It gives me a whole new respect for these new fans and really its nice to see people being mature and thoughtful.
For any of you new to BW, i highly suggest checking out Best vs Skyhigh game 3 on Destination from Gomtv's Averatec-Intel Classic 2008 Season2. Its cast by Tasteless in english etc etc. This is a lesser talked about gem of a game in my opinion and if you like brutal TvPs with nonstop destruction and nonstop reinforcing you might dig this game.

Somewhat new to pl here (i watched 3 seasons very casually prior to the hybrid season as I only played bw for a year, mostly sc2 player). Never rooted for a team in those seasons but I've decided to become a cj fan! Effort(all around) - main ace, retired after winning OSL beating flash from a 0-2 deficit, recently came back Hydra(all around) - ace when effort retired, pretty pretty solid game Leta(TvT/TvZ) - known for micro intensive strategies, used to play with 2port wraith in tvz, has a hard time beating jaedong, team capt, cross dresser, miracle boy(for impossible comebacks), one of the best TvTers, brought ^_^ to cj's -_- (cj is known to have poker faces until the merge of OGN/hite Sparkyz to CJ entus) Horang(PvP) - tigertoss, insane macro monster, very very good PvP and known for his impeccable building placements ^ main players in order of skill (my own opinion)
Snow(PvT)/SkyHigh(TvT)/BByong - role players, snow is a PvT sniper but horrendous PvZ (not sure), SkyHigh is known for his TvT, he defeated Jaedong-led Hwaseung Oz during a winner's league final from 0-3 and brought the team back single handedly to win 4-3, BByong up and coming terran
other players are idk, practice partners/rookies/vets

To add a little to this:
Hydra isn't in good form right now, currently he's looking like at best CJ's 4th player (behind horangi/effort/leta)
CJ has a large stable of B-teamers that are competent and capable of bringing upsets (see: Rush in this current OSL) They won't see much playtime though since CJ is a very very deep team.
Also Snow's PvZ is NOT horrendous--he played a famous Bo5 in the MSL vs Jaedong where he pushed the dong to his limits--all epic games, I highly recommend them. Snow is a very mercurial player, some games he'll absolutely smash, others he looks pretty mediocre. Has (possibly) the best reaver control in the business, in all 3 matchups.

Has (possibly) the best reaver control in the business, in all 3 matchups.
i honestly have no idea about snow aside from his PvT
well remember that series against jaedong in the PDPoP MSL?
he played damn good in that series.
was one of the games in Destination where snow went 4gate goon?

Never rooted for a team in those seasons but I've decided to become a cj fan! Question for longtime cj fans: who is cj's ace/best player and who are the players that come after him? aka rank cj's players from top to bottom.
