I don't like how this early game is looking for Stork, even if he did show kickass aggression there.

Not much 2 goons can do other than kills maybe another scv or two.
He could've tried to snipe rine but one of his goons were really low hp.

He had 4/5 vs a 1-marine bunker and no tanks yet (1 almost ready). He could've won the game here imo. Chose to play it safe I guess.

Good D from Mind, somehow predicted reaver

I always wondered if you can hear siege tanks outside the vision.

Haha, Stork lures out the marine at his 3rd with his probe, getting to kill it with his walled-out dragoons.

Stork is 40 food up, which is good considering he went down to 20 food up there after throwing away goons to clear the mines in front of minonly.

Why did I doubt him at all? Lovely to see storms like that in that key moment.
edit: Yeah, There was a moment there where Mind had all the map control, and was ahead in food count. Stork let his macro lapse during and immediately right after that big battle where they both traded 180+ food armies, while he was banking 2k minerals 1k gas. He had set up a great deal of income all over the place though, and had enough gates to spend it, so he was right back in there even after Mind starte dsuccessfully pushing.

Well, Stork has more food supply throughout the game than Mind except after one battle where Stork has slightly lesser.
Mind didn't harass Stork's expo enough. Stork deserves this win.

On December 26 2010 21:39 composition wrote: can a Terran player please explain what the HELL just happened?
The Terran had basically 2 bases against Storks 5. So he had a bigger army and won most of the early battles but couldn't shut down Storks expansions. This meant Stork just grinded down the earlier army advantage until he eventually won the game. Nothing fancy just war of attrition that Stork won.
|
Stork took it without much trouble.

Stork won all the engagements very cleanly with minimal losses to his army and was able to trade off his units with Mind's which is advantageous to him since he had more bases(better economy). Mind couldn't expand because he had to keep up his unit production or he would get rolled by Stork.

On December 26 2010 21:39 composition wrote: can a Terran player please explain what the HELL just happened?
Mind was never ahead, and in my opinion he was never even close to being ahead, especially once Stork was able to keep him from taking the bottom left natural.
On a gigantic map like this where Protoss can literally take like 10 bases, Terran has to win a big fight decisively enough to follow up by killing like literally 4 or 5 bases in one fell swoop. Basically Mind was never close at all to being able to damage Stork's economy in a significant way, and when that happens it's just an inevitability that Protoss eventually overruns Terran with a combination of unlimited units, Stasis, and Storm.
If there existed something like a "remaining resources at currently mining bases" counter, it would have been much clearer how every late push by Mind was essentially all-in at that point. Even though he did a good job, Stork held on just enough. Play enough TvP and you'll have plenty of games where it feels like you're doing a good job exchanging armies with P, only to have the floor drop out from underneath you when your bases run out of money, while P still replenishes effortlessly. It's part of what makes the matchup tough.
|

Is this Bo3? I mean...Stork is playing again? xD

I can't read Shine's facial expression, nonchalance perhaps?

As an observer, Mind played really bad this game. Stork has always +2 basses ahead which is too much. The timing to attack was probably just went stock get his 4 with his +1 +1. I'm so disappointed MIND. The only hope now is Shine beat Stock and he willingly loose to MIND!!!
|
Come on folks. Stork was never behind. If you looked at the money, you'd see that Stork always had a lot more income and a lot more food. He might've played sloppily in terms of micro, but it was more or less zerg-style with continuous reinforcement until he bled Mind dry.
|
I like Shine and all, but he's no Stork. Dude needs to get 4gated right here!

OGN counter doesn't include queued up units. Hence, you can't see how many units are building in the gateways. So it was kind of misleading.

Because if Shine beats Stork and then beats Mind, Stork and Shine advance, but if Shine beats Stork and loses to Mind, everyone's 1-1 and they just start over again. Shine and Mind have said that their goal is to advance together, so they definitely might just do this.

Mind is definitely incapable of winning against Stork because his playstyle is just so easy for someone as good in PvT as Stork to demolish. He does a pretty shitty timing attack like a watered down Forgg or turtles and bleeds units while trying to harass.
The two guys don't want Stork to go through...if they're really close friends they're going to arrange things so Stork has to deal with Shine instead of Mind to go through to the next round. If Shine wins against Stork and Mind, it just leaves Mind to get ruined by Stork (this is nearly definite, Mind is too weak at TvP to beat Stork) and probably make things pretty awkward at the house.
|

STORKUUUU!
This OSL is yours to lose.

Damn, no ridiculous tiebreaker marathons tonight =P

Shine looks like he's not feeling well. He was sweating already after a few minutes into the game, and his overall response time was bad.

YES STORK
And here comes the interesting match.

He got man handled and Minds chance was kinda resting on him winning. Maybe that's why he was sweating, just a lot of pressure.

The '>'-relation is not transitive in Starcraft.

Now I want Mind to win and advance and Shine eliminated.

Now that bisu and Kal kill Shine to advance would make me happy. Go Bisu!

He was sweating long before it was clear that he's getting "manhandled". I think the causality here is the other way around.

That is really not the best way to play against Stork. Shine should have played much more aggressively, since once Stork reaches the mid game in good shape, is PvZ is actually really really good.
Also, go Mind!

It's a lot considering the time. The tiebreaker started at 9, and these things can go pretty long(though it's not going to today, thanks to Stork).

Umm... The game was effectively over when Shine "aggressively" went for Stork's base(due to only one cannon up at natural) and failed miserably. He then lacked the units to defend against Stork's +1 speedlots, which more or less killed his 3rd.
Everything else after that was simply Stork preventing Shine vs Bisu part 2. Hence why Stork cannoned up everywhere and merged archons to fend off the muta switch. Shine had no chance following Stork's attack on the 3rd.
|

That's what he did exactly, and Stork defended it.
After that he would've lost earlier if he didn't defend 12.

2-1 tiebreaker is not as fun. The last game better finish soon so I can see the Ro8 matchups quicker.

I think by "aggressively" he meant "3 hatch hydra busting" or "speedling run-by" or even "4 pool".

So we ended up with:
Hyuk, Kal Calm, Hiya Stork, Mind Modesty, Fantasy
The ro8 matchups should be good, whatever they turn out to be. Would be hilarious if SKT1 had another team kill with Fantasy vs Hyuk.
Also, Kal versus Calm or Modesty would be funny (there's a 2/3 chance of this, the other 1/3 is Kal vs Stork ... lose lose for Kal)

I don't think that's the biggest difference. The biggest difference is that Hiya didn't destroy Bisu's 'invincible' PvZ... twice.
Remember, any zerg not named Jaedong beating Bisu will get him hated for life.

Nah. There really is a huge difference in likability. Remember that game vs. Free, where Hiya went for a nuke rush (in an actual starleague game!), and it ended with Free building a Command Center in the middle of the map? That sort of thing will get you a lot of fans.

I like Perfectman more than him, 'cause this season this guy actually wins games in PL. -__- And plus he is positive-mooded.
On the other hand Hiya kicks off OSL Soulkey and JD and then sucks at SPL and sucks in all other matches in OSL.
On the other-other hand, Shine kicks ass in SPL, perfecting his muta-control to next-to-unbeatable levels and getting points for the team.
Shine's 100% better than hiya. X_X

Stork's interview was surprisingly not so entertaining. But he did say he just got his galaxy tab... I guess this means more cellphone games and less practice from now on. I predict carriers and more carriers in Stork's Ro8 games.

Lonyo already gave a good reply, so I'll just point out that I was talking about likability, not past results. Hiya is fun to watch and actually funny at times, whereas Shine... well, there's that stare I mentioned...

Well, although both sucks, turtling is more entertaining than cheesing/rushing/all-ining... Shine may get more love if he plays Jaedong's or Zero's style, but hell no, he plays Hyuk's style.

What style? His style is aggression and pressure, but not so headless as Jaedong sometimes does, more like a planned one =)) And he has insane muta micro (of course when he doesn't willingly suicide it to wraith+turret lol).
The thing he probably has to overcome is his habit of being an underdog... (and lol, overcome hate of Bisu/Stork fanboys too)

It depends on what type of aggressive play it is, 2 hatch muta that forces a Terran to micro his M&M and win with superior micro is good, 5 rax cheese that forces a bunker war or marine/scv war is good.
3 hatch hydra busting a Protoss with very few slow zealots is lame. 4 pool rushing a terran/protoss with only SCV/worker is lame. There's almost no micro in those case, just straight up BO win.

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. It's epic series though, and pretty equal I might add. Too bad Bisu got himself owned by Shine earlier in this osl.

I believe this osl belongs to protoss. Legend of the Fall is back. The zergs and terrans left won't trouble stork or kal, too bad the potential semi-finals between stork and kal will decide it.

Shine sank same way like Flash and JD - too cocky about their "dominance". Shine talked about tiebreakers but couldn't walk in those tiebreakers. Would be fun if Shine is gonna lose to Bisu and come down to Earth cuz he is really high these days about his win streak

|
....The Shine hate here is suffocating. Almost as annoying as the Flash hate when he dropped out of the MSL. :/
Anyways, I didn't really have any particularly strong opinions regarding this tiebreakers since I would have been fine with any of the three players advancing, but being more inclined as a Mind fan, very excited to see him get out of tiebreakers. I know some people don't like seeing his play, but I think he plays differently in BoX rounds than he does in individual games (Hence, the title, scholar terran because he "studies" his opponents before playing them). I don't know if he still has that same prowess now, but it's always good to see it reflected in an OSL BoX.

Hyuk < Fantasy Calm > Mind Modesty < Kal Stork > HiyA
Fantasy should be able to get by his group, and I think he wins this years OSL. He's already beaten Hyuk before in the MSL, and he should be able to do it again. Calm vs Mind I think it will be Calm, but Terrans do have an advantage over Zergs.
Group C and D. I would normally favor Stork over Hiya, but Hiya is 5-1 against Stork anything can happen.

Shine has a very scary ZvP. After the game today I'm starting to respect him as a player.

They were rubbing it in because they knew people would react to their posts. Obviously that's what trolling is.
Did you read some of the posts in the LR thread when Shine beat Bisu? The most common post was like "Fuck this I'm quitting Brood War forever" and/or "Fuck you Shine you skillless noobie", every single post was basically someone crying their eyes out, of course someone is going to rub it in.
It says a lot when people are still basically shedding tears and wishing for Shine to drop out (and prefer Mind, a player whose play is so uninspiring so far, to enter the Ro8 over him) over two events, one literally a whole year ago. Its petty and no, beating someone doesn't normally get you this amount of stupid hate from the majority of Brood War posters - its like ForSC2's (?) irrational hate for Bisu multiplied by the amount of Bisu/Stork fans out there who can't come to terms that they played poorly the days they got knocked out.

On the subject of Shine hate, my personal feeling is that I don't want one-trick ponies to be around towards the end. Not that I don't like cheeses, as I was as thrilled as anyone whenever someone gets Kwanrrooled. But players like Kwanro, go.go, Horang2 with their cute tricks aren't the players I want to see in a Bo5. I want to see players who are well-rounded.
In this OSL for instance, I actually prefer someone like Hyuk over Shine. Hyuk, for all the crap we give him, plays incredible late game with great army control and decision-making when he doesn't... well, hyuk himself. You can actually find great games from him. And by great I don't mean making lots of mutas and hoping the opponent doesn't expect it.

i vouch this. additionally, when shine beat stork on that stupid ice map outsider remake with 98-style 100000 mutas, he was abusing the retardedness of the map to its fullest. imagine how much more epic this osl had been if the finals was flash vs stork instead of flash vs pvz-onematchupspecialist movie.

Yes, its clearly abuse when he took advantage of the fact Stork had no corsairs to go pure mutas, something noone has ever done on that map. Compared to so many other zergs out there, Shine is one of the more rounded ones. He has great ZvZ and ZvP so I have no idea wtf you smoking. His ZvT is really inconsistent but then again, so is almost every other decent zerg out there.
And once again, when Shine first hydra busted someone out it was gay, the second time it made him look all-in noobish. The 3rd time it just meant his opponents were retarded for falling for the same thing over and over.

He's a decent player but his ZvP isn't as good as you say it is. He has winning records against Bisu and Kal but has lost several games against tosses with terrible PvZ.
