The 2009 Asian Indoor Games (AIG) will be happening next week in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Asian Indoor games is officially sanctioned by the Asian Olympic Council and is an event for competitions that are generally played indoors and may be under consideration for the Olympic games. Examples of other games at the event are 3v3 Basketball, Futsal, Billiards and Chess. This year the Vietnamese Olympic Committee has decided to add Starcraft as one of the "E-sports" at the event (the others being Counter-Strike, FIFA2009, NFS, DotA and NBA Live). E-Sports made their First appearance in Macau 2007 but did not include Starcraft.

We dont send any Starcraft players, and probably no other countries does except China and Korea. I dont even know whether China sends any because everyone is scared of Korea lol

Its funny story in Vietnam as well because we initiated the inclusion of SC and did organize the preliminary round for selection of 2 players participating in this AIG. But after that the Vietnamese organizing committee thought that it would be hard to get the good results when competing with China and Korea so they decided not to send any players. Furthermore, in Esport, we have stronger team in other categories such as FiFa and DOTA. It looks like each country has limited number of categories to send players (4 in 6 categories)

I am also really surprised that countries like Singapore and Malaysia where not only SC is good but Esport in general do not join this esport competition

Too bad for SC but this is also great chance for the community to meet Flash and Fantasy irl. Everyone is very excited. The stadium is also located in the place crowded with internet cafe shops (like PC bangs in Korea) so lots of nerds will join this fun.

I never thought I'd see "may be under consideration for the Olympic games" and "StarCraft" being mentioned in the same post.

I think that's why a lot of participating countries choose not to take part in E-sports?

I think this is why KT, SK, hite and STX aren't playing this week and thus the no-game Monday. KT and STX manager is over in Vietnam, fantasy from SK as well.
Dunno about hite, I just guess they needed a fourth team to make it even.

Starcraft is being played on the 3rd and the 4th. If I can allocate some time, I'll pass by the competition hall to take pictures with Flash and Fantasy =D

It's such a shame though, that there are only a few SC players.

P/S: on a side note, Vietnam just won our first (and probably only) eSport gold medal in DotA lol

I'm going to bump this because the first games are scheduled to start at 8:00am local which would mean the group stage is well under way, the event has a website but the starcraft results/players aren't yet updated, anyone at the event?

I don't know who the Chinese players are, neither of them are F91, it appears that Yang Zheng once played FIFA for China at WCG

F91 just said that it's not due to visa issues. He couldn't go because only last year's "champions" were to be sent. Xuebin plays nfs, and zheng plays fifa, and has around vs lv5 in starcraft.

the other players that are playing starcraft (besides Flash and fantasy) all competed in other events as well (FIFA and nfs)

if you're interested in CS, the team from Uzbekistan took WeMade FOX to three maps before losing to them

Only if Flash and fantasy off-race to Protoss

Actually, the moment Flash or fantasy finishes his perfect 4 scvs split, the opponent should just gg.

There was a show match between Fantasy and Flash (both went Protoss), Flash won that game.

Qatar players decided to give up their games against Korea after watching Flash and fantasy played. Hence, each of them got a free win (i lol'd).

I'm at the event right now and the game was broadcasted on the huge projector screen. The other six LCD tvs were showing CounterStrike 1.6 though.

The games were absolutely embarassing to say the least, I'll post more photos and results when I get back to the hotel tonight.

And my thoughts on the AIG2009 when everything's over.

I've talked to the leader of the China E-sports team yesterday and he mentioned to me that they did not send F91 because they need to compress the number of players attending the matches, as a nation is only entitled to join a limited number of games, so they chose to send only players that can actually take the title.

I think this kind of limitation really sucks balls.

Anyway does anyone know who the two players from China are?

Yay me, I've met Flash and Fantasy in real life and god bless me, Flash is really cute while Fantasy is a boy of few words

When I came up to them and ask for the photos (for me and the fan boys), they gave me a gentle smile

Below is my pictures

There is no SC in India, I wonder who was there, probably some organiser playing there. Or a friend of an organiser enjoying a free trip to Vietnam.

I think this is the case, the only Starcraft player from India I know is HellGuardian. It's unfortunate that India sent no-name players because I've heard they're not happy with how many medals they have so far but if they sent Break and Rulezzz, that probably would have been two more medals.

Those pictures are fantastic, it looks like it was a lot of fun to hang out with Flash/fantasy. If the rest of the tournament hasn't been very good I imagine that the finals at least, will be very fun to watch (even if you're not a TvT fan)

Yes, this tournament is certainly hilarious. I laughed quite hard when I heard about the circumstances for the Starcraft matches. I would like to know more about the Quatari incident. Did some rich boys go as the only Starcraft players in their country, and decide they didn't want to be humiliated?

Everything about this tournament just scream out that something is wrong. You have the Koreans facing players that are worse than average, you have strange forfeits, and why the hell would India want to send worse players if they want more medals? Save expenses because the guys were going anyway?

By the way, the Uzbekistani Counter-Strike doing well isn't really surprising. One of their teams have had some impressive results while facing opponents from Russia and the Baltic countries, even European opponents as well, if I remember correctly.

the Qatar players were there to play FIFA and were instructed to play in the Starcraft tournament, as someone said earlier, they didn't forfeit, they played out all of their games.

The other countries didn't want to send players for Starcraft because they knew they would not be able to defeat the Koreans and I guess they sent their non-starcraft players into the tournament in an attempt to grab the bronze.

I know Uzbekistan has had decent CS squads in the past, I was just pointing out that it was a good game because WMF slaughtered the team from Mongolia and Iran couldn't compete; I was just glad there was something decent to watch there as it sounds the Starcraft matches were not.

I'm unsure if the players from China forfeited their semi-final games or if they were played, I just don't see them on the website. Regardless, it's an all-Korean finals.

Flash 2-0 He XueBin (Walkover)

Fantasy 2-0 Yang Zheng (Walkover)

Both the Chinese players forfeited their games, again. And it's an all-korean final now, Flash vs Fantasy. As much as anyone hates TvT (or any mirror matchups for that matter), it's gonna be the best games played here.

dude, just think of it as an exhibition for Flash and fantasy to show their starcraft prowess, it wasn't a big tournament or anything, there wasn't prize money

AIG = Asian Indoor Games ... It's kind of an Olympic-like event, and eSport is one of the many categories. It's not even close to WCG, let alone being a decent Starcraft tournament because they give higher priority to the other so-called "real sports".

Having said that, being a Vietnamese, I'm absolutely ashamed of how they organized this shitty event. Just an example of how fucked up it is: the idiot who is in charge of eSport at AIG doesn't even know the difference between Save Game and Save Replay in Warcraft 3, lame much?
